NEIL REYNOLDS NOTICED A HUGE DIFERENCE IN MY ATTITUDE FROM 10 YEARS AGO!!!!

I wasn’t going to write about this issue but what the heck??? I can save it as a souvenir. For you newcomers? I attended this meeting.

Neil Reynolds, holder of the Irving Chair in Journalism, will deliver a public lecture on “How Journalism Can Thrive and Newspapers Prosper for Another 100 Years”.

The lecture will be held Wednesday, October 19th, in the Ted Daigle Auditorium in Edmund Casey Hall beginning at 7:00 pm.

In the 1800s, newspapers connected people through free-wheeling debate and an authentic sense of community. Mr. Reynolds will argue that now, in an impersonal era of disconnection and fragmentation, newspapers must return to the values that once before made them indispensable parts of community life.

I showed up at 7:00pm and Neil Reynolds was there.



I would say there were around 35 people present.

I noticed a few older hands and young students were in the audience.


Minutes before the lecture was set to begin, I decided to go outside for a smoke.

I heard tumbling on the ground. Walking by me were over 100 students marching into the building.

At first, I believe they were going in the Auditorium to listen to Mr.Reynolds presentation?

It sorted of reminded me of soldiers from old Germany going to listen to their leader speech!



Neil was always a good speaker. I had some dealing with this guy while he was in charge of the telegraph Journal.



He went back in time telling the audience that journalists and editors were hated and often executed.

He continued by saying that moral conduct was very important.

Boy? I sure wish the Irvings were present to listen to his words of wisdom.



He reminded the audience that we have came a long way from the first day we chatted over the phone but it was also a sad day for journalism because the reporters are doing too much work from behind the desk.



They should go out on the streets and meet the people.

He said that guest columns are a great idea because everyone has a story to say.

I said to myself - Yeah, the Irvings don’t have to pay for a columnist.

He wasn’t too keen on bloggers because they’re not knowledgeable, he believes in true editors to spread the news.



His main point was that the newspapers are read by almost everyone so therefore they’re the ones who should be listen to?

Anyway, once he finished his little speech, he turned to the audience for questions?

Of course yours truly was in the back row and I was the first to ask a question but I made one mistake.

I didn’t mark anything down.

I asked Mr.Reynold if he recognizes me?

He didn’t but those brain cells click in once I told him my name.

He reminded the audience that he indeed remembered and he used to fix my letters to the editor all the time.

If you people believe that my grammar is terrible now???? You should have seen it years ago???

But Mr.Reynold soon found out that I wasn’t the same Charles that he met 10 years ago.

I was a very upset individual who’s fighting the Irvings.

I reminded the audience that I was a blogger and I appeared in front of the Senate on April 21st and they could read my presentation on my blog.

I also told the group that I respect J.K and Jamie Irving but J.D. Irving is turning this Province into a second old Germany by controlling the media.



I reminded the audience that it took 50 days for the Irvings to cover my protest in front of the Legislature.



Mr.Reynold intervene and wanted to know my question?

He knew that I was upset especially when I mentioned old Germany.



My main question was if he had a problem of a Billionaire controlling the media and gave orders not to print certain individual’s letters to the editor?

He didn’t really wish to answer the question and continued to the next question?

I laugh when someone mentioned if he believes in Political Cartoonists?



His answer - They are important to the papers.

Afterwards, I reminded the speaker that I remembered when he got fired from the telegraph Journal and days later Josh Beutel < my hero cartoonist > was hired.

When Neil was re-hired? Josh was let go. This all happen on two different occasions.

The word was he dislike political cartoonists.

Every instance that someone tried to get a answer from the speaker on the Irvings?

He quickly compared jumped to other owners of the newspapers.

He said that he respects J.K. and Jamie.



He did mentioned J.D. but I couldn’t stop myself by voicing my disapproval.

I wasn’t a happy camper.

It had nothing to do with Mr.Reynold.

It’s just he’s paid by the Irvings to speak to the students for a six weeks period and I don’t agree with this.

At one point I said - Any Editor who’s fired will have to leave the province to work in his trade.

He quickly reminded me that I won’t have to worry about that.

I was going to fight back but I let it go.

It was so bad that on one point Phillipe Lee stood up and pleaded with me to respect the room.

You see, it’s very difficult to listen to a man and you know that it’s the Irvings who sent him here from Vancouver.

Afterwards, being the nice guy that I am!..lol..



I went and apologizes to Mr.Reynold for my actions but I told him that it’s a total different ballgame than 10 years ago.

The Irvings are totally out of control.

I chatted with him for a few minutes and someone droved me home.

I guess that he’s here for 6 weeks to teach the students at Saint Thomas.

I reminded Mr.Reynold that he should consider himself lucky that I’m not one of his students?

I was going to take a course in journalism a few months back but backed off once I found out that that Irvings donated one million dollar to train these future journalists.



You know brainwash them that the Irvings are great!



Here in New Brunswick? We are in an awful situation and lets see what the Senate will say once their final report comes out in a few weeks?



I predict that nothing will be done of the way the Irvngs are detracting what issue New Brunswickers will know about.

They will crucify in their editorial anyone who dares to run for political office who didn’t give their live and soul to the Evil Irving Empire.

But at the end, it was nice to see Neil Reynold again.



He is truly a nice guy but it’s not my fault that he happen to be at the other end of the room defending the Irvings.

A FRIEND IN THE PATH OF HURICANE WILMA!!!!

Hi: this is just a note to let you know the latest true information about the huricane wilma, as of thursday morning. we are assuming the appropriate disaster position:



seated, head between the knees, kissing the ass goodby!

really, as of this morning we are not sure if we will get anything bad from wilma.

previous similar hurricanes have been far enough away to give us just a small amount of wind and rain.

we are hoping this will be the case again.

but we are preparing for the worst, as usual. we have food, water, extra propane, bateries and all the other things to survive for a couple of weeks, if necessary. we will be taking pictures and will post them when we can.

by late thursday night we expect to be able to predict how bad it will get here. the computer models show that wilma will come onto land, which will give us the hurricane strength winds.

but only if it is category 3 or better and if it comes at least 20 miles on shore.

so the long and short of it is that we are not expecting to be greatly affected, but are preparing just in case.

for those who appreciate, the lady down the street is lighting candles for us at the church and including us in her prayers.

my personal expectation from this is that we will have a terrible weekend for business, but that i will get some sleep for a change.

we will let you know tonight or tomorrow mornig how it is progressing here in progreso!!

TIM SMITH - IN HIS OWN WORDS!!!!

For those of you who might be interested-I went down to Saint John High School to ask if I could go in and hear what Ms.Hooten had to offer for my area and to get an honest feel for what both sides were offering and or had on the table.


As I started to enter I was told by Mr.Jay Chang And Mr.Idee(????), (sorry I can't recall his last name at this moment),,Listen Tim you know that we both think highly of you and that your a good person but for this one we have to decline on letting you go in,anything else you know we would definitly do it for you but just not this one.
Idee then proceeded to pull out his wallet and flash his Conservative member card to everyone that was there and said--See this,if you do not have one you don't get in.
He also went on to tell me that this meeting is private and for members only, To which I replied----
So what you are saying to me is your party is holding a Private meeting in a Public building of which belongs to the tax payers and is in my riding?? and all I want to do is hear from both sides on the issues at hand to see what the differences might be from one party to the next.

To which he once again replied,Tim anything else just not this one I'm sorry and at that I thanked him, shook his hand and left.

Oh one last thing I went there with NO signs,No hand-outs,nothing of any kind just myself to be an observer.

Tim Smith showed up and he was stopped in his tracks right at the door.

He was told that he wasn’t invited in the room so therefore they wouldn’t let him get in there.

I just couldn’t believe it!

There’s this individual who walks from his house to attend a P.C. gathering were he has to listen to a lot of B.S. but he couldn’t get through the doors!

You regular readers would remember a column I wrote months ago of visiting my old area in Glen Falls.



I was sad to learn of the many people who died in such a short period.


Well, it happen again!

I was very upset once I found out that John T. McMillan Jr died on August 31st at the age of 34.

I just couldn’t believe it!

He was known by the people in that area as Little John!

Who is little John you asked?

When I first moved to Glen Falls, I quickly learned that it was like a little village within the City Limit.

As any other little area, it had a little store.

It was an convenience store and he named it - Little John's Variety Store

I’ll never forget the time, I walked through his door. He said - May I help you Sir? Thank you for coming Sir! Have a good day Sir!



After a few visits, I asked John - What’s with all the Sir..Sir…Sir???

He reminded me that he needed me and I didn’t need him. To him public relation was the utmost importance.

Once the Government decided to remove all the VLT’S from the stores, I gave my sympathy to John saying that I felt sorry for him because he won’t be able to go to Florida every winter?

He quickly replied - I am very happy the machines are gone because you don’t know the abuse I went through from people shouting at me because they lost all their money. From now on, the people who visits this store will buy from me and not to play the machines.



I couldn’t fight that one. Mind you. John had lots of pride with his little store. He spent thousands of dollars paving his yard.

He had two little kids- Taylor, 4, and Maggie, 1.

He wasn’t keen on shoplifters or people hanging around outside his store. He was stern and that’s the way he was!

Little John was good with the little kids and they always enjoyed going to his store.

He wanted to change it in a family store and he succeeded.

But unfortunately he died at such a young age. Life isn’t fair sometime.

They say the good dies young? Well that statement sure goes with Little John’s sudden death.

I heard the citizens in that area will petition Common Council to change the name from Glenview Avenue to Little John Lane?

It would be a fine tribute to a man who affected so many in such a short period on this planet.

I was going to use the title as – Is Dr.Russell King a jackass????





I seem to receive mix feelings from these former Health Ministers.


Last year, I confronted Dr.Dennis Furlong on the issue of Ritalin.



As a private citizen he told me that ADHD is over diagnosed.

DDDUUUUHHHHHH.....I hope so because there are over 40,000 kids on Ritalin around this province.

A few months ago, I was told that Bernard Lord won’t hold a committee to study Ritalin.

I was told that Dr.Larry Kennedy < Lib > told the MLA'S of the Health committee that as a doctor? There’s no need to do a study on Ritalin.



The next day, I confronted the Mr.Kennedy.

He let it known to me that he was a doctor so therefore he knows what he’s talking about!

I quickly reminded the MLA that I have ADHD therefore I know exactly what I’m talking about!

He reminded me that parents came to his office just last week and told him that the teachers send them?

I reminded the Liberal MLA that one of my conditions when the protest ended was that no teachers were allowed to suggest to the parents that their child should be on Ritalin.

Now we come to Dr Russell King.



I bumped into this former Liberal Health Minister during the weekend and I wasn’t impressed whatsoever.

He was chatting with a woman and I approached him on the issue of Ritalin.

He quickly told me that Ritalin is God sent for some families.

I continue to press the former Minister on the issue of Ritalin.

He once again let it know to me that it’s bad for protesters or media to speak out against Ritalin because it is a gift from God for some Families.



I wonder if he knows that Ritalin began with Hitler? I heard this a few months ago that Hitler wanted some pills to give to his soldiers. Maybe the readers can tell me otherwise?

Anyway…. you could tell by the expression on his face that he didn’t even want to debate the issue with me.

I reminded the Minister if he knew that by the decision of the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission that kids taking Ritalin are label as close to mental retardation? The minute they take that first pill? Their lives are ruined!!!!




He let it known that he wasn’t going to debate the issue with me.

He told me that with proper diagnosis it is a God sent for some families.

I reminded the Former Health Minister that if he knew that it cost $1,400 for a proper diagnosis of a child? Therefore the kids who are on Ritalin are from poor Families.

He quickly turned his head.

It’s funny that once I mentioned that most of the kid who’s on Ritalin are from poor families? The conversation quickly came to an end.

I hope this jackass don’t come back into public office because we need people in there who fights for the people who’s poor or rich!

I’m learning that these Doctors politicians don’t truly understand what’s going on with this issue.

Over 40,000 kids on Ritalin. 10,000 signatures asking the Government to do a study but Bernard Lord is proudly sticking to his gun by saying that the drugging and the killing of our children will continue till oct 15, 2007!

I got news for Mr.Lord.

Saint John Harbour has hundreds of families who’s children were force on Ritalin and this will play a factor in the by-election.

Province jails innocent autistic boy
Government's decision sickens autism advocate

The provincial government is temporarily housing a severely autistic 13-year-old New Brunswick boy on the grounds of the Miramichi youth jail, a decision that is drawing fire from the province's Autism Society.

"Personally, when I saw the information initially, I was sick to my stomach," Harold Doherty, spokesperson for the New Brunswick Autism Society, said Friday. "That's my gut reaction."

The boy, who cannot be named by law because he is under the care of the Minister of Family and Community Services, is severely autistic and requires highly specialized care.

A department official confirmed Friday the province placed the boy in a small cottage on the grounds of the youth jail in Miramichi in mid-September and contracted a private company to provide care for him 24 hours per day.

Department spokesperson Robert Duguay said the boy does not have any contact with the youth housed at the jail nor the guards who work there. He said the province will keep him there until a space opens up for him at a specialized care facility for autistic children in Maine, they hope at the end of October.

Mr. Duguay said the province tried to make other arrangements, including placing him in a special care home, but those did not meet his needs and placing the boy on the grounds of the youth facility was the best option.

"It's not an environment with bars and jail," Mr. Duguay said. "It's nothing of that nature. It's a facility that was appropriate for that high complex needs level. It was appropriate for the safety of the client. It's a safe environment for him. It's a safe environment for the caregivers too. It's just temporary."

But Mr. Doherty said the boy should not be housed on the grounds of the jail even if he is in a separate cottage. He worries the boy may come in contact with offenders held there and said it's just not an appropriate place for this child.

"Obviously they (the province) wouldn't lie and say he's in a cell if he's not in a cell but he's still in prison there. That's the reality," Mr. Doherty said.

He said in this particular case, the province could have rented a small house in a quiet area and asked the private company to care for him there.

He said province needs proper residential facilities for autistic children because there are many children who are severely autistic and in need of care. About 1,200 New Brunswickers have some form of autism.

"To me, (this case is) a pretty clear indictment of the fact that we don't have proper facilities for autistic children with that severity of autism. If all we can do is imprison those children, we have failed them. That's the obvious reality," he said.

Mr. Doherty, who has a profoundly autistic nine-year-old boy, said the situation made him worry about what could happen to his own son.

"If I pass way in an automobile accident tomorrow and he is turned over to the state, is imprisonment in his future? These are real concerns that we live with on a regular basis," he said.

Mr. Duguay said the province couldn't build a residential facility for just one case.

"Are you saying we should build a centre in New Brunswick when we have one in Maine because of one exceptional case?" Mr. Duguay said. "Are we building a centre for one case when we got calls yesterday from people asking for money for shelters all around the province?"

Mr. Duguay said the boy's parents gave custody of the boy to the province because they couldn't care for him anymore. Citing confidentiality, he wouldn't provide any more details about when that happened or whether the parents approved the boy's transfer to the grounds of the youth jail.

He said the province placed the boy at a special care home but that didn't work out.

"He needed to be isolated without having people living near because he would have been disruptive. It's a very exceptional case... It's an exceptional situation that needed an exceptional solution and it is temporary," he said. "We feel that this is okay, that this is all appropriate. It's all well looked after and we are not sure what the concerns are all about."

When pressed about why the province chose a cottage at the youth jail over other options, Mr. Duguay said: "We had two days to make a decision. This was available."

Mr. Duguay initially said the cost was confidential but later put the cost at $700 per day for staffing and food. Two people care for the boy at all times.

"We can't take an individual like that and put him in a closet and close the door and lock the key. We have to look after the person... Personally at the department, we don't care how much. We have to do it and we try to find the best in a reasonable way."

Mr. Doherty said the placement of the boy at this location is inappropriate.

"You can dress it up anyway you want, it's still a prison. What it represents is a total failure to provide any decent residential care for a severely autistic person in New Brunswick," he said. "In the best case scenario, they are going to send him to Maine. They are going to export him. To me that's a total failure."

He said the autism society has long lobbied for residential care facilities in the province for severely autistic individuals. He said he plans to write several cabinet ministers, including Family and Community Services Minister Tony Huntjens, about the situation.

Liberal public safety critic John Foran said Friday the boy may be living in a cottage but he's still being housed at the youth facility compound.

"I don't believe that somebody should be held there who is not there through a court," Mr. Foran said. "He hasn't been sentenced there by a court... He hasn't committed any crimes."

He said the government should have rented a cottage or home elsewhere to house the boy.

Mr. Doherty said the autism society was upset when the province placed a young autistic man, Waleed Arif, in Centracareseveral years ago and this new case raises even more concerns.

"It's gone from bad to worse as far as we are concerned.

Radio host reprimanded for caller's comments
CFBC takes steps to improve caller screening for Talk of the Town

A Saint John radio host has received a slap on the wrist from management after failing to stop a caller from uttering threats over the air of a call-in show.

Rick Mantle, host of CFBC 930 AM's Talk of the Town, was given a written reprimand after a caller suggested that in order to remove Common Council from office, one way might be to "hire an assassin if you have to". That was in reaction to a public policy decision that angered the caller.

Those words were unacceptable to Gordon Dalzell, a retired social worker who heard the call on Aug. 24.



"As a social worker for 32 years I have spent my whole life promoting peaceable and socially appropriate means of dealing with conflict and violence," Mr. Dalzell said.

He was upset that Mr. Mantle's response to the caller was, "I wouldn't go that far," without offering a more stern rebuke.

The comments made by the caller caused Mr. Dalzell, who was driving at the time, to write down the rant after he had pulled his car over. He then sent a complaint to national broadcasting regulator, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Council (CRTC). The CRTC passed the complaint to the station owner, Maritime Broadcasting (MBS), as is the practice.

As a result of Mr. Dalzell's complaint, MBS gave Mr. Mantle a written reprimand. In a letter to Mr. Dalzell, dated Oct. 2, a manager stated, "although our goal is still to allow the public to express their views, that guidelines of acceptable behaviour have to be policed."



The letter also stated that "While we support the right to free speech, we agree that the caller's comments crossed the line of acceptable behaviour. We agree that the onus is on us, as the broadcaster of this program, to not only air the caller, but to guide them on acceptable behaviour."

The letter was signed Dan Barton, the Moncton-based director of programming for MBS.

The radio station has also improved its caller screening process by hiring former host, Terry Wallace, to produce the show and screen the calls, reminding callers about acceptable on-air behaviour.
