Linking this to the ship building era is flawed. Consider the retail competition that has made Parkway irrelevant. While your timeline is right, implying alink is wrong.
I can't understand why that mall is so empty. It's right in the middle of mall-land. Primo location, no tennants. What's the deal with that?! Is the rent too high?
Parkway Mall is surely a Dead mall at its finest. I bet it was the place to be back in the 80s while it was still in its prime, but with all the outdated stores and lack of cosmetic updates I am sure this is how it came to its demise.
Unlike anonymous, I can understand why the Parkway Mall closed. They started bringing in cheap/tacky stores (the ByWay, those stores that sell velvet blankets with a great big wolf head on them and of course the tackiest of all velvet wall pictures. You are not going to attract customers selling crap.
I guess from previous posts that this mall was pretty happening in the 70s and 80s but welcome reality! Do you really expect a mall like this to be thriving in business this day in age? I think not, yes I am sure we all have fond memories of the arcade and the bible store and the soda stand but come one... The few sales that they might make in a week wouldnt cover the cost to lease the space there. I say tare it down! Put something there that will actually attract business.
To Anonymous...I don't remember the name of the Kiosk, but I do remember it food was not too good. I had an egg salad sandwich one day that had mold on it. Yikes
I enjoy reading this blog, at least I did until I saw that filth by anonymous. If you don't have anything nice to say or even human, then just keep your bad words to yourself.
I think the "circular kiosk" you are referring to is actually called "Johnsons Bagel". This is the reason why they designed the lunchonette in this circular shape, to resemble a bagel. Their bagels were SO GOOD, they had a spicy jalepeno one, just the thought of is makes my taste buds tingle!
I would like to respond to the person who said velore blankets were tacky. Who died and made you Ralph Lauren? I have three of these blankets and I love each and everyone of them. And yes, one even has the wolf head. I have curled up many a cool Saint John Winter evening and was nice and toasty warm with my blanket. Oh yes, I bought at Parkway Mall!!!
Yes Anonymous you are correct, it was Johnston's Bagel. They were all over the maritimes. I think Brookville Mall in Fredericton had the best one. They had a pumpkin/cream cheese Bagel that was to die for. I used to drive to Fredericton just to get a dozen. I talked to Marg at Johnstons at Parkway and asked if they could get them here, she said no.
I also have 2 of those blankets - one has a wolf and one with deer - they are great to curl up in watching TV so don't knock them, apparently you just don't appreciate a good thing
I used to work behind the scenes at the parkway mall... Boys oh boys... if walls could talk! On a daily basis we had to deal with motor head punks and the crypts of the parkway mall. This mall was filled with low life greasers.
Parkway mall was the first place i got drunk, me and my bottle of boones wine its been a downward spiral since my lips brushed that bottle... Damn you parkway mall... Damn you to hell.
I have also heard that the MET at Parkway was haunted. I believe there is an article at the East Library on that very subject. I think it is called local hauntings.
Wow! it seems parkway mall really touched a lot of peoples lives, how sad is that. Why don't you guys plan a get together to catch up on old times you bunch of 80s losers!
My heart goes out to the person who became a bitter, drunk. You really cannot blame your troubles on the Mall. I am also a bitter old drunk, but I don't blame it on anyone but me. So suck it up princess.
I went to the show one time at parkway mall. It was a saturday afternoon, i rememeber this day well because I had a jumbo sized pop dumped on me by my little brother, what a mess that made, I remember everyone in the movies turing around and looking at me. I was so embarassed that I ran out of the theatre crying, for a long time afterwards I would not step foot in that mall.

They failed to adapt to change.
We look like we are prospering. No one has extra money and it is getting worse.
"No one has extra money and it is getting worse. "
That must be why the retail sector is booming in the city. Just because a small mall couldn't keep up with the times doesn't mean doom and gloom.

Does anyone remember the name of the food kiosk that was at Parkway Mall.

I think the name of the food Kiosk was Smittys Pub, but I am not sure
No, I dont think that they are talking about smittys, I think they are talking about the circular diner that was located in the center of the mall.
Parkway mall is the shiot!

Was the little circular kiost called Johnson Bagel?

I remember this spot!
I played double dragon at the arcade... Man I miss those days!
These were the times of lee jeans and mall bangs.
This mall sucked, very very depressing place.

Didnt this place have the met? I heard that it was haunted... it sounded like foot steps behind you in the back isles...
I once had a dream of opening a store called the "Velveteen Blanket" alas... it never materialized! Another time... another life
I remember Marg at Johnsons! She was a doll!
Would any of you readers be interested in entering a Parkway Mall foat in the Santa Claus Parade this year?
I used to work behind the scenes at the parkway mall... Boys oh boys... if walls could talk! On a daily basis we had to deal with motor head punks and the crypts of the parkway mall. This mall was filled with low life greasers.
Why is this place still standing? Couldn't they put something there that would attract more business?
I got engaged at Parkway Mall. I was proposed to at Johnsons Bagel.

I believe I ate a haunted bagel at Johnstons Bagel once. It really spooked me.

bagels suck. why would anyone ever make a bagel shapped store. that is the dumbest idea I have ever heard of. no wonder this store is dead.
This mall has been dead a long time!
