If people want to go gamble, they're going to do it, "racino" or not. Having said that - the destructive force of gambling is running rampant in N.B.
My concern is that selective regulation through slanted government policy has done nothing more than to allow monopolization of this vice.
If your local establishment wants to have a poker night, why should they be barred while the government-certified casinos go hog wild?
Let's pretend that gambling licenses weren't difficult to come by. If we started to feel this was a problem, would it make sense to say - "only company X can provide this horror". More likely, we'd either ban it altogether or try to mitigate its effects with rational regulation across the board.
Given that the current system allows someone more than enough rope to hang themselves with VLTs and Sportsline, why not just tax all gambling proceeds appropriately and let the people sort things out on our own?
McKenna in Ottawa Frank McKenna is in Ottawa today for an informal and intimate dinner at a small Centretown restaurant. He'll be meeting with political staffers from all four parties, journalists, civil servants, lobbyists and intellectuals, all of which are Atlantic Canadians.
Given SES's recent poll showing Dion's Prime Ministerial potential at rock bottom, is McKenna in the first stages of testing the waters for a future bid at Liberal leadership?
The former New Brunswick Premier was smart to sit out for the last contest. But would McKenna steamroll Rae and Ignatieff in the next race?
Insiders say that McKenna would be a strong contender for the Liberal Party if he should ever become leader, however, it has also been said that the former Canadian ambassador to the US would rather be the clear favourite in such a race rather than getting down into the mud to slug it out with others that aspire to lead Trudeau's party.
He'd wade shit,if he thought he could fool enough people again.A wheel rut guy.
