YOU COULD SAY THAT I LEFT MY MARK IN EAST SAINT JOHN???

CHARLES LEBLANC 005, originally uploaded by Oldmaison.

With all the talk about crosswalks and the deaths of a few citizens in Nova Scotia and the future deaths that will happen in East Saint John? < I pray it never happens >

I wish to share with the readers a little experience I had 15 years ago.

I was living on Mount Pleasant Avenue in East Saint John.

During the frigate program, this was a very busy road. Especially being a blind hill? It was very dangerous.

CHARLES LEBLANC 004

I saw old citizens crossing the road to take the transit bus.

There was also a school located near-by and kids were crossing this very busy street.

I notice a 5 year old running across and slipped on a piece of ice.

He fell down hard and I quickly came to his rescue.

The little boy was crying and crying.

I told him to come inside
and my girl would put a band aid on him.

He said- NOOOOO...My mom told me not to talk to strangers...wahhhhhh....and walked away crying his little heart out.

WEll? That did it!!!!

I decided that I was going to have a flashing crosswalk in that location.

People in the area told me they have live here all their life and there's no way in the world I'm going to succeed in having the City install a flashing crosswalk in the area.

I was told by the City that in 10 years from now? There will be a overpass by the main road. 15 years later, there's still no overpass.

CHARLES LEBLANC 003

I began going door to door and I collected 500 names on my petition.

I also wrote many letters to the editor about this issue.

I must write a little funny story while going house to house.

I knocked at this door and a old guy answered the
door.

I told him that my name is Charles LeBlanc.

He quickly said- Not the guy who writes letters to the editor?

In those days, I received that comment all the time and the funny part? it was in the year 1991 and I was just beginning to write letters to the editor in Saint John.

I ended up writing 500 until the Irvings with the help of Peter Haggert ordered the paper not to print my letters.

OK...never mind that.....The old guy invited me inside and ordered me to sit down.

He asked me - Do you smoke Mr.Leblanc?

I told the old citizen that I did indeed smoke.

He came back with a nice brand new package of smoke.

He continued by asking me if I drank?

I told him that I indeed enjoy a nice drink.

He came back with a cold Alpine beer.

He said - I haven't had a drink since my best friend died a few months ago.

Do you mind if I have a drink Mr.LeBlanc?

I told the nice guy that it was his house.

He took a big bottle of hard liquor from under the kitchen sink and made himself a drink.

He took a nice drink and stared at me.

After a few minutes, he said - So?? You're Charles LeBlanc???

I felt a little embarrassed and he said- I have been reading all your letters Mr.LeBlanc!

I taught you were an old man but you're just a young mutt!!!!!

I reminded the old guy that I hear that line all the time.

It felt good in those days because I had a view on different issues and I had a high paying job at the Shipyard.

Looks like my style haven't change 15 years later...lol....

Going back to the old guy?

He said - I invited you into my home, gave you a pack of smoke and a nice beer for all you to keep Mr.Leblanc!

I told the guy that it was very nice of him.

He raised his voice and said - BUT THERE'S ONE THING YOU MUST UNDERSTAND ONCE AND FOR ALL MR.LEBLANC????

I said - What is that now?

He continued - THIS IS WHAT YOU MUST UNDERSTAND???
WE THE MEMBERS OF THE C.O.R. PARTY ARE NOT THAT BAD!!!!

..lol..I started to laugh because I wrote many many many letters against the C.O.R. Party and I will say that I was right on certain issues especially the part of removing the Acadian flag at the New Brunswick Legislature.

I was right on with that issue because once they got a few C.O.R. members elected? They demanded the Government removed the Acadian Flag from the Legislature.

I showed up at that meeting and the rest is history.

I collected 500 names and appeared in front of the Saint John Common Council and the citizens in that part of the City got their crosswalk.

I might add that I had some help with the Mayor of the day.

mcalary

To this day? The crosswalk is still there.

I’m long gone from that area but you can say that I did leave a little land mark that the citizens can remember me by?

Irving tug probed in pollution crackdown
Last updated May 16 2006 09:21 AM ADT
CBC News
The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating suspected illegal bilge dumping from an Irving-owned tug boat that docked in Hawaii last month.

The Atlantic Hickory was en route from Shanghai to Jacksonville, Fla., when it stopped in Hawaii on April 5.

Company spokesperson Mary Keith says the boat was boarded as part of a routine inspection. "The tug was released shortly afterward as were the crew," Keith said.

The vessel is now under investigation for possible pollution violations.

An article published in a shipping industry magazine, Tradewinds, says coast guard inspectors obtained a search warrant as part of a campaign against devices known as "magic pipes."

Magic pipes are used to bypass oily water separators on ships. The bypass lets the crew dump polluted bilge water directly into the sea.

Keith says it is the company's belief the investigation will conclude with no charges. "We maintain our belief that there was no illegal discharge. And none of the evidence to date would suggest otherwise."

Terry Shore, the clean water campaign director with the California environmental group Bluewater Network, says the coast guard is cracking down on the owners of boats that use the so-called magic pipes to discharge bilge waste in American waters and is issuing fines as high as $25 million for violations.

"The U.S. Coast Guard at least, is enforcing the oily water laws more strictly than in the past. And they've been working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies."

Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan
Last Updated Wed, 17 May 2006 14:30:51 EDT
CBC News

A female soldier from Canada has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, military officials said Wednesday.

She died in a military operation against Taliban forces, said Prime Minister Stephen Harper during question period.

She has not been identified, but was a captain in the Canadian Forces.

Military officials are in the process of identifying her next of kin, said Harper.

The prime minister said he wasn't sure whether this was Canada's first female combat death.

The military action took place south of Kandahar, where the majority of Canada's 2,300 soldiers are serving.

This raises Canada's death toll in Afghanistan to 16 soldiers and one diplomat since the mission started in 2002.

MPs will vote Wednesday on whether to extend Canada's deployment in the country until 2009 from its currently scheduled end date of February 2007.

Social issues and business challenges
In our view: Examining deep-rooted social issues is the only real fix for downtown ills

Downtown Fredericton is a beautiful setting, with an eclectic mix of shopping and tourism opportunities. It is vibrant in cultural and historical heritage.

And new Downtown Fredericton president Linda Pond wants to grow the downtown's appeal.

It's a role of responsibility when that individual is engaged in leading the view of the merchants in a downtown area. It's a role of even greater importance when the downtown remains as vibrant and as much a focal point of the community as Fredericton's downtown.

Too many downtowns in this country have given way to their own age, lack of visual appeal or to the siren's call from suburban malls.

You are hard-pressed to find a small-city downtown setting as beautiful as Fredericton's.

Pond has identified two strong agendas for the downtown area. The group is in favour of creating a permanent late-night bus service from the bar district, and combating overly aggressive panhandling.

The view has been that there's less late night destruction and other problems if patrons - usually young people - are removed from the bar district quickly and safely. A shuttle service was experimented with in 2005 and, while desired, funding remains unsure.

And aggressive panhandlers can cause disinterest in the downtown for shoppers who do not want to be badgered by those who choose to panhandle.

These are tough but worthy goals for the downtown community to pursue.

The difficulty is, neither goal can be accomplished by the work of Downtown Fredericton alone.

Both "solutions" are a reaction to a domino chain of social issues which creates the problem in the first place. While both ideas improve the problem, they border on simply masking the problem.

Some panhandlers are young people looking to feed addictions or supplement social assistance. The solution for these panhandlers is much different from what needs to be done for the destitute.

And problems such as drunkenness, excessive noise experienced when downtown bars close and graffiti call for a whole other sort of fix-the-issue-before-it-becomes-a-problem-in-the-first-place solution.

We think Downtown Fredericton can continue to grow, blossom and be enhanced to create tourist and shopper traffic. And we think the goals of the group are on the right track.

We'd like to see Downtown Fredericton - and the community as a whole - maintain a very visible and progressive public focus on the social issues that create our panhandlers and the need for shuttle bus service in the first place.

WITHOUT FAITH IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE HIM, FOR
HE WHO COMES TO GOD MUST BELIEVE THAT HE IS,
AND THAT HE IS A REWARDER OF THOSE WHO
DILIGENTLY SEEK HIM.
( HEBREWS 11:6 *NKJV )

Dear Charles,
God rewards us with blessings that continue to please us,
so we should do our best to please God as well! After all then;
"BLESSED YOU SHALL BE IN THE CITY, AND BLESSED
YOU SHALL BE IN THE COUNTRY."
( DEUTERONOMY 28:3 )

Now we can do that by obeying His Commandments
and by loving our neighbor's as ourselves. For Jesus
Christ said, "YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD
WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND
WITH ALL YOUR MIND. THIS IS THE FIRST AND GREAT
COMMANDMENT. AND THE SECOND IS LIKE IT:
YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.
ON THESE TWO COMMANDMENTS HANG ALL THE
LAW AND THE PROPHETS." ( MATTHEW 22:39-40 )

So Charles, do your best to live by God's
Commandments, and share your love with others so;
THAT YOU MAY WALK WORTHY OF THE LORD,
FULLY PLEASING HIM, BEING FRUITFUL IN EVERY
GOOD WORK AND INCREASING IN THE
KNOWLEDGE OF GOD. For when you do, His blessings
will flow abundantly to you! After all it is written that;
WHEN A MAN'S WAYS PLEASE THE LORD, HE
MAKES EVEN HIS ENEMIES TO BE A PEACE WITH
HIM. Amen. ( COLOSSIANS 1:10 ) ( PROVERBS 16:7 )

With My Love & Prayers,
your servant Allen
