Irving news group fires Miramichi editor
Last updated Oct 31 2005 08:44 AM AST
CBC News
Irving-owned Brunswick News has fired the award-winning editor of Miramichi's local newspaper.

The paper has not publicly disclosed its reasons for the firing, and that has prompted some members of Miramichi City Council to call for Cathy Carnahan's reinstatement and demand a meeting with Brunswick News managers.

Miramichi councillor Peter Manderson introduced a motion asking for those two things at a council meeting last week. "I just feel that they owed us an explanation, just to up and say nothing about firing the local editor."

Carnahan says the only reason she's been given for her dismissal is on her official record of employment from Brunswick News, which states she's not a proper fit at the paper.

"As an editor and as a journalist, I consider it a compliment because I certainly don't fit if I'm unable to do my job with integrity and I believe that that became an issue."

Carnahan wrote an editorial a month ago that said the line between news and advertising was blurring in the paper's newsroom. She also said the paper would be hurt by the loss of two graphic artists. She did not disclose in the editorial that one of the laid-off artists was her cousin.

The paper later printed a clarification. It said "the Leader is embarrassed by the omission and the lack of editorial integrity."

The company declined to talk about the reasons for Carnahan's dismissal. It says it won't comment on personnel issues.

Carnahan was editor of the Miramichi Leader for 18 months. During that time, the paper won six national and regional awards.

This is the second time Brunswick News has fired an editor in less than a month.

Three weeks ago, Brunswick News dismissed the editor of its free weekly magazine Here after a controversial cover photo of a breastfeeding baby hit news stands around the province. Brunswick News managers said the photo was not appropriate for some of the establishments that give away the paper, so replaced it with a cartoon drawing of a woman holding a baby.

ROGERS TELEVISION AND THE IRVINGS ARE DENYING SAINT JOHNERS THE RIGHT TO SPEAK???

I just received this email -

lordtv

Hi Charles

Last night I emailed my question for the debate and in order for my question to be asked I must verify my address and phone number.

The problem I see is they use the people of Saint John and News Media province wide; as a Saint Johners who cares what is going on with the By election we will not be able to ask a question.

Some people who don't care or so down or passive, right now do not realize the problem we will face in the future with the Lord government.

Some people hopefully will step up to the plate.

I will try to pass my question on before the deadline.

Controlled again by the select group; I'm sure exceptions will be made and we will know nothing about that.

Lord Government and people who don't even pay Saint John taxes to vote to let the Bill pass to give billionaires their tax deal for 25 years.

Fairness with Irvings, Rogers Television and the Premier.

This will effect all of Saint John, asking a question should be allowed.

Am I wrong or what they have tax us so much and made deals behind closed doors, fairness is never on the side of the ordinary tax payer or citizen.

Fed up with the Lord Government!

A TRUE HALLOWEEN NIGHT IN THE CITY OF SAINT JOHN!!!

Tory minister resigns amid controversy

Last updated Oct 31 2005 09:36 AM AST

CBC News

Family and Community Services Minister Tony Huntjens
has resigned following allegations that he violated
privacy laws by revealing personal health information
about a young man under the department's care to a
newspaper reporter.

The daily provincial newspaper alleged in a report on
Saturday that Huntjens volunteered the identity of one
of two New Brunswickers sent to a mental health
program in Maine for treatment.

Tony Huntjens

Tony Huntjens
On Monday morning, the provincial government newswire
issued a statement that Premier Bernard Lord had
accepted Huntjens' resignation. His duties will be
assumed by Tourism Minister Joan MacAlpine.

"I deeply regret this situation," Huntjens said in the
news release. "However, I feel my resignation is the
best course of action at this time."

Lord said in the release that Huntjens had worked hard
as a minister. "Tony has been a very capable minister
and has served the government and the people of this
province with honour and compassion. However, he has
informed me that he feels this is the best course of
action and I accept that."

The news release does not provide any official
explanation for Huntjens' resignation.

Huntjens will continue to represent voters in Western
Charlotte, who elected him in 1999 and 2003. He was
sworn into cabinet in 2003.

This is the second Tory minister to resign from
cabinet in the last year. Former environment minister
Brenda Fowlie was forced to step down several months
ago after an investigation confirmed that she revealed
personal information about Liberal MLA Stuart Jamieson
during debate in the provincial legislature.

IS MICHELLE HOOTON FOR REAL??????

Hoot-poor

MY GOD?? YOU WANT ME TO CHOOSE BETWEEN GOD OR THE IRVINGS?????

I’m not running out of stories to write about but I believe this is a classic. I told this funny story to many people.

You long time readers? You may have already read this one. < But I added some pictures. >

Subject:MY GOD?? YOU WANT ME TO CHOOSE BETWEEN GOD OR THE IRVINGS?????
To: oldmaison@yahoo.com

Monday, I sent a letter to the editor of the Daily Gleaner. The story was about my priest!

Charles 04_07_05 018

I knew the editor already had a letter about the Irvings but I decided to send another one about Father Brien!

The one about the Irvings was my concern for Fort Naswaack.

pap23

The Irvings bailed out from the project because they would have to spend $300,000!!!

The Mayor of Fredericton Brad Woodside told the media that the City will not pay money to maintain the former Acadian Fort.

P1010010

So I wrote a letter asking the Irvings to give a helping hand.

Therefore the editor had two letters on his desk.

One about the Irvings and the other was about the Priest.

God.creating.stars
irving_big

The editor of the letters to the Editor at the Daily Gleaner is Brian Kemp.

I never met the guy but he sounds like a real nice guy over the phone. I had many conversation with the guy and here’s one of them.

I phoned the Editor and asked- Did you received my letter?

Brian quickly answered - Charles, I have two letters here???? Which one you want printed????

The one about the Irvings or the one of the Priest????

I quickly replied - MY GOD??? YOU’RE ASKING ME TO CHOOSE BETWEEN GOD OR THE IRVINGS????

I KNOW THAT MANY OF YOU IRVING EMPLOYEES BELIEVE THAT THE IRVINGS ARE
GOD BUT I’M VERY SORRY!!!

irving

WE MUST PUT THE IRVINGS ON ONE SIDE FOR NOW!!!!

WE MUST CHOOSE GOD!!!!!...lol

God.creating.stars

To this day, we still have a chuckle over this one.....lol

Someone told me a joke - The Irvings might believe there are God but God never once said that he believes he’s Irving!!! …lol…

For you newcomers? This was the letter-

Father Brien will be honoured

Dear Editor: While sitting in my classroom in the late 1960s, a mysterious man walked into our class.

It was the new priest who was just ordained as a priest in Memramcook.

He had black hair and was carrying a guitar.

Slide47

His name was Father Emery Brien, and we all loved this man. Emery was different from other priests.

He got a group together and played the drum and guitar in the church.

This was very unheard of in those days. It was called Le Groupe rythme de Memramcook.

Every Saturday evening, Acadians would attend the service and the main reason was to listen to these performers.

chuirch

In the early 1980s, Father Brien was transferred to Saint Louis de Kent and a huge party was held in the valley to say good bye to this fine priest.

pic5

I might add there wasn't a dry eye in the area.

Slide78

I visited Father Brien once or twice while he was stationed in his new village. After a few years, I lost touch with Father Brien, although I did see him at least once.

When I began my protest in my tent in front of the legislature I was told that Father Brien was stationed in the capital.

charlie
cross!!!

I just couldn't believe it.

I quickly phoned the priest and he came to see me.

It sure was nice to see my old friend again. He was the main force of my protest.

P1010022

As I told Premier Bernard Lord, Father Brien told me that I am doing the
right thing.

I told the premier that I had the Lord on my side.

If I could have the other Lord on the same side everything would be perfect.

Charles 04_07_05 072

During the evenings, Father Brien would come and visit me and we would discuss many different issues.

I was curious about his views on the scandal in the Catholic church.

He told me that some priests abuse their hold on power.

They believe they can get away with almost anything.

He told me that many kids came to him for a hug. If the parents are not around, he makes certain there's no hugging. He will hug a child if the parents are around.

Slide76

It's a darn shame that the scandal ruined it for the good priests.

So, why did I decide to write about this priest you may ask?

Slide18

On Dec 19th, after the 10 a.m. service, people will mark the 40th anniversary that Father Emery Brien was ordained as a priest.

Slide18

There will be a little get together in the basement of Ste-Anne-des-Pays-Bas after the first service.

Everyone is welcome.

ROGERS TELEVISION HAS JOIN THE IRVINGS IN DENYING NEW BRUNSWICKERS THE RIGHT TO SPEAK!!!!!

Rogers Telvision has sunk to a new low in New brunswick!!!!

rogers

It all started on Thursday evening when Rogers television had the issue of Autism on the program.

The new host is Rich Crosby.

rich web

He took the place of Dennis Melanson.

Charles 04_07_05 078

Dennis was there for a few years and I would always call in to get the ball rolling and it was a great way to share views with New Brunswick.

melonson_lrg

I would always praised these open talk shows!

One minute before I was going to go on the air?

The producer cut in and in a very polite way told me that Crosby got the orders from someone not to take my call.

rich web

I was very surprise that a young host would demand that certain callers are not allowed on the air?????

I told the producer to let me know what’s going on?

I won’t go publicly with this one but that all change this evening on Voice of the Province.

VOP%20Web

I called from a pay phone and the woman told me to leave a message on a voice mail.
They call it the viewers hotline.

I quickly replied - Yeahhh right!!!! But I soon found out that she was serious!!!!

She explained to me that they are not capable of transferring calls from a payphone.

Only from a resident phone.

No problem, I walked down the hallway and used someone else phone.

I called and left my number but the guy taking the calls wouldn’t put me on the air!

Phil Vincent 222x170_3

So Rogers has joined the Irvings of denying freedom of speech to New Brunswickers????

I have been calling these talk shows for years and never cross that line.

I always behave.

I remember last year when Bernard Lord was on?

They wouldn’t let me question the Premier.

Charles 04_07_05 071

Why is that now?

Who’s giving the orders to Rogers not to accept my calls.

Did Rich Crosby accept a bride from the Irvings?

rich web

Who knows? You tell me????

Many don’t like this new guy < Rich Crosby > and I heard many sad stories about the new host on Rogers and I guess that from what I’m hearing? It’s all true!

Well? As far as I’m concern?

It’s Rogers lost and not mine but I will let anyone who cross my path including all the Ministers of the Lord Government that they must listen to the public concerns!

Germany all over again???

You tell me????

I’ll tell you one thing!

I will never lower myself to the standards of Rogers and the Irvings!!!

jd
rogers

Shame on them but this issue is not done yet!

L-pup

Not from a long shot!!!!!

Freedom of speech must remain alive in New Brunswick!

It was bad enough that we’re not allowed to write letters to the Editor but now this? Shame…Shame,,,Shame….as I said last winter---- Hiiiiiiiii Lord!!!!!!

By the way? The issue that I wanted to bring up with the Minister of Education was why are we giving our kids chocolate milk in the classrooms????

beverage-chocolate-milk
madodube-small

Maybe she gave the orders? Who knows but one thing is certain!

I will confront the Minister face to face.

I always like her and I was going to praise her but who knows what was said in the studio of Rogers?

What next? Will these same people tell CFBC talk of the town that Charles is not allowed on the air???? Once Rick Mantle leaves?

rick2

Maybe one day I'll come home and my computer will be in the garbage????

Saint John June 04-05 003

It could be very well possible! Nothing surprise me no more of the happening in this Province?

The Irvings and the staff at Rogers are acting like this guy!!!!!

bios_townspeople_burns

There's never a dull momment in my life. Always something but this is what keeps me going! Thank God that I have ADHD because I would have took a heart attack a long time ago!!!!
