Premier Bernard Lord will announce details of the provincial home heating oil benefit this afternoon.
The premier announced on Sept. 9 that the government would pay a one-time home-heating oil cash rebate to families with gross annual income of less than $45,000 who do not receive social assistance.
The premier announced the one-time rebate in response to sharp increases in oil prices resulting from hurricanes and other factors over which the government of New Brunswick has no control.
Premier Lord said in September the rebate would help about 37,000 families, costing taxpayers $6 million.
The premier will come to Saint John this afternoon to help Elizabeth Weir, president of the new Energy Efficiency and Conservation Agency of New Brunswick, officially open the organization's new offices on Charlotte Street at 2 p.m.
Mr. Lord announced the outlines of the rebate program following a government caucus meeting on Sept. 9, but a government source says he will announce today details such as where and how to apply - and who, exactly, qualifies.
The source said that people who qualify should get their cheques two to four weeks after they apply.
"The increasing cost of oil is a global problem and the government cannot do anything about the cost of oil," the source said.
Mr. Lord announced this rebate as a one-shot deal for the hardest hit families but, the source said the long-term solution lies in burning less oil.
The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Agency will address that issue.
The government announced last year that it would set up such an agency - a promise on which Mr. Lord made good on Oct. 13 when he appointed Ms. Weir to head the new agency.
Ms. Weir had to give up her job as Saint John Harbour MLA and leader of the New Brunswick New Democratic Party when she accepted the new position, precipitating both a byelection and a leadership convention.
New Democrats chose Allison Brewer of Fredericton as their new provincial leader. Saint John Harbour voters go to the polls on Nov. 14.
