AN EMAIL FROM A CITIZEN IN EAST SAINT JOHN ABOUT THE IRVING REFINERY!!!!

B5

Good Afternoon,

Yesterday on the morning news it said that something was going on at the refinery.

The men that were reporting to work for 7 o'clock were locked out.

They said that they would bring the news as soon as it was made available to them.

Well the news was that there was a fire at the refinery, and a spokesperson was on the air saying that their own fire department got it under control.

You should hear the people that live over in the east end complaining here today?

It was the topic at lunch and they feel that they heard the sirens that are 2 long and one short , or in other words the sirens are codes.

They feel that they should know what these sirens mean especially for those who hears them.

What would happen to the people who live close to the refinery if their very own fire dept could not get it under control?

The media did not share the news maybe because the Irvings refused to give them the new,,,,who knows?

Charles 04_07_05 020

The bottom line is they have way too much control.

Oh no, not this minor stuff again. I don't how many times I've told you people, whether It be the Refinery, the Lng Central Command Terminal, or the LNG Terminal Gas Pipeline itself, the Irvings have it all covered, when it somes to the Publics Safety.

This was proven from the fire situation. We Irving employees are so well trained, we were able to put out the fire ourselves.

I really wish you people would stop complaining about the Irvings, because the truth of the matter is this, Saint John would be nothing without this great Industrial Family.

As Halifax so aptly demonstrates.

This is the first time I've ever posted a comment, so you'll have to forgive me if I seem a little nervous or don't seem to express myself very good.

I think the Irvings provide a good service to the Saint John area. Sure they have a business empire, but where will you not find various other business empires in other parts of Canada as well ?

I'm not saying I agree or support anything and everything they do.

But let us not forget how the Irvings did the past upgrade on the Loyalist Burial Grounds, in the uptown Saint John area.

They made a nice little park type of thing by, re-doing the old dome from the former Old General Hospital and planted flowers and stuff on Garden street.

An lets not forget about the IRVING NATURE PARK : And I would have no problem if the Irvings even started to Charge an Enrance fee to use the Irving Nature Park.

That's the problem with all you local Idiots here in Saint John, you're all a bunch of Cheapskates, and want anything and everything for nothing.

And I support our Local Mayor and Council if they decide to up the local Taxes, even if er have to bleed from where it hurts the Most.

I was reading this-mornings newspaper, and I see this letter in the Letter's To The Editor's Column " Don't Put A Pipeline In Her Backyard "

I live in the North End of the city as well, and I had no choice when group homes for a bunch of Juvenile Delinquent's and Young Offenders.

These group homes were Just Put there, and those of us against this idea and no say or choice about the matter.

A friend of mine, who lives in another part of the North End as well, also has a bunch Juvenile Delinquent group homes just planted on thier street as well.

Why should the person who wrote the Letter to the Editor complaining about the Pipeline be treated, or even be thought of as being any different than those of us, who just had to accept what those in power decided what to do.

Maybe Saint John residents should just shut up about the Pipeline, and be content to watch the whole darn city, go down the toilet.

The argument that 'other businesses control other parts of the country' is hardly a defence. As has often been said here, nobody has ever said Irving shouldn't exist. But Irving is ONE family, at least in other parts of the country there is a balance of competing companies-who can compete with Irving? In fact in gas we know that they don't even try, when Irving started moving west ESSO told them that if they competed out west, ESSO would really start competing in the east, so Irving backed down and are now mostly going south.

The idea that because they provide jobs and a service (nobody else can do that?) that they are somehow above criticism is laughable. Notice how nobody is saying Irving's should 'go away', but there are plenty here saying that 'all criticism of Irving should go away'. Does that sound fair to you? Even when the company owns all the newspapers?

The companies in other places are also publicly held corporations, not private companies, which means when they do something aggregious then they can be held accountable at shareholder meetings and with boycotts of their stocks. In a private company that doesn't exist.

Here was a fire at a refinery and the point was that it was not covered by media, how is that an unruly criticism? I don't live in Saint John, but most of the time if there's a fire in a residence then its on the news, but here a whole refinery is on fire and there's no reporting? I certainly don't see how its somehow 'whiners' being unreasonable. I have no idea why somebody would sit back and say that Irving should be able to do whatever he wants with no complaints because he fixed up a cemetary or built a park.

I have news for you, WE built that park, don't you remember when the shipyard was closed and the federal government simply GAVE Irvings 50 million dollars with no strings attached? THAT easily built your park as well as the Belledune park for which they get so much praise. The company didn't pay for it, YOU did. So the next time you walk through that park and start thinking about how you'd happily pay Irvings taxes for them, walk proud and say "Boy I built a darn nice park". Because you did, and so did I, but if YOU start acting like Irvings then you would not be above criticism either.
