Harper and Martin have serious problem. They can get pig flue and bird flue respectively. Layton is going to have lot of fun with his hemp I suppose. I should vote NDP. LOL
If the pollsters are correct, Canada’s next government will be formed by Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party. That event will sadden some and please others, and while I count myself a member of the former group, it makes sense to see the good in what you may not otherwise welcome.
So, based on what Mr. Harper has said in the past, here are 10 possible scenarios from a Conservative government.
1. Canadian soldiers go to Iraq. No doubt lraquis, weary with blowing up Americans, would welcome a change.
2. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is disbanded. I waste far too much time listening to it, and no doubt I could get the same high-quality information and service from Moose FM.
3. Canada withdraws from the Kyoto Accord. This accord is a waste of money and, as everyone from Banda Aceh to New Orleans knows, there is no global warming.
4. Thousands of married couples are declared unmarried. This would apply only to same-sex couples. Others would still have to go through the usual routes and hire lawyers. That doesn’t seem fair.
5. Quebec and Alberta separate. One has better food, the other more money. Mr. Harper would defend their leaving as he has always stood up for Canadian unity.
6. We join the US missile defence program. It’s really tiresome how bad countries are always firing missiles at Canada and this would put an end to it. What better place could we put our money?
7. Stockwell Day would be foreign minister. He’s the Conservative foreign critic now so he’s a natural for the job, and wherever he goes people will be impressed by his good looks, intelligence, and wetsuit.
8. Canada privatizes medical care. Yes, yes, Tommy Douglas was declared greatest Canadian for bringing in medicare, but the CBC probably fixed the voting and Don Cherry should really have won.
9. We’d have closer ties with the United States. They may have a seven trillion dollar national debt, a record deficit, and a weekly, billion-dollar drain Into Iraq, but their future, and therefore ours, will be bright because Mr. Bush said so.
10. Mike Harris will be back. With former Ontario Conservatives such as Jim Flaherty and Tony Clement now seeking to spread the paradise that was Ontario under Mr. Harris to the rest of the country, can Mr. Harris be far behind? Mr. Harper needs him in cabinet, perhaps as Minister of Aboriginal Affairs.
So, however the election comes out there will be something to look forward to and something to disappoint. The laughing and crying starts January 24.
Clearly, Harper is the preferred choice of the U.S. administration, as a Washington Times editorial announced at the beginning of the campaign.
"I think it would be natural that an administration as ideological as the Bush administration would greatly prefer a Conservative government," says Campbell, a UBC political scientist who holds the Canada Research Chair in U.S. government and politics.
But even if the U.S. prefers Harper, that doesn't mean he'll get an easy ride, Campbell warns.
"It doesn't mean the U.S. is going to bend over backwards to accommodate Canada," he says. "I think that Stephen Harper will have a rather disappointing learning curve."
But Harper's critics are more worried about a pro-U.S., so-called hidden agenda. Whether or not it actually exists, the Conservatives have managed to keep the subject off the public radar screen so far this election.
"Stephen Harper is going to be the most American-style prime minister in modern Canadian history," says author Mel Hurtig, an Order of Canada recipient. "He will definitely take steps to integrate Canadian armed forces in the U.S. He will definitely participate in the U.S. missile defence system."
8:16 PM and 8:20 PM you are scaring the helling out of me. If all that is true, most probably is, then get ready, belt up as there is going to be lot of turbulance. Harper is not the right choice for the prime minister despite the problems of Liberal regime.
The reality is Harper will become our next PM (not that I'm happy with that) & I think a lot will come from the fact it's been a long time (13 yrs) since there was a PC government. People will vote just because they want change not necessarily because of what the PC platform is.
My only hope, at this point, is that Harper will have a minority government. If Canadian history prevails, a minority government only last 18 months before a new election is called.
Can anyone tell me why gay marriage is a key platform speech in this election? How does this agenda help our medicare system? How does it help with high taxes? I think there's way too much publicity on something that doesn't merit it. A time & place for everything!
LOL ! ya spinks & dont forget his plans to clean up government! ya umm aaaa ya thats it! he will clean up umm ahh....O CRAP! CALL SCOTT REID & MAKE SURE HES STILL SHREEDING DOCUMENTS FROM THE LAST THIRTEEN YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!! O YA & TELL HIM THE BEER & POPCORN IS ON THE WAY !
harper is one person in a new party with new policy that has been laid out day after day since the start of this campaign.
the world will not end with stephen harper & the new conservative party of 2006 in government. if it does then the people will judge them just as the liberals SHOULD BE JUDGED this election.

I felt that I had to write to you after seeing those large “Conservative” signs around town. While it is completely your choice to vote whichever way you want, I just felt I had to tell you something. I have posted this page in the hopes that I can make a difference. I lived in the US for 15 years before moving back to Canada. I left shortly after George Bush took office. George Bush truly damaged America. He damaged the economy, the environment, world opinion and he even damaged Americans ‘inalienable rights’. I am trying to save Canada from a similar demise.
After Steven Harper launched his Campaign platform, I became truly distraught. He is saying very similar words to that of George Bush during his 2000 campaign. Bush promised tax cuts, promised not to alter abortion laws, pledged to make government “smaller” and pledged to increase the military. When criticized for having a budget that was too high, Bush said he was spending projected budget surpluses. Harper is using the same campaign strategy. Both Bush & Harper call themselves ‘Compassionate Conservatives’ in an attempt to lessen the fears of free thinking voters. Both promised the same things – even longer prison sentences. It is clear that if elected, Harper will make Canada more like the USA in most ways.
Voting for Steven Harper is like voting for George Bush. The two are just too similar in their campaigns and in their beliefs (remember Mulroney & Reagan dancing together on the stage?). Why does Canada need a bigger military? The only reason would be so that it could participate with the US in world policing. Steven Harper was in favor of Canada going into Iraq and if elected he will send our troops into the next US-based conflict. It is not mere coincidence that both Bush & Harper come from Oil-related regions and interests (and of course they are both against the Kyoto accord). Harper & Bush are very tricky about their campaigns, rather then openly admitting they don't care about the environment and want us to consume more oil, they spin the circumstances and make claims that the Kyoto accord isn't fair, or that there is no proof it will work, and of course they say "we need tough environmental laws to lower smog", but Kyoto already addresses all of this. The bottom line is that the large corporations that back Harper & Bush want us all to keep consuming more oil.
To make matters worse, Harper has built his platform on adding more US programs including mandatory minimum prison sentences.
Beyond the fundamental issues, Harper will hurt the Canadian economy and the Canadian dollar by overspending. Although he promises tax relief, Bush promised the same thing. The only people that actually saw real tax relief were – and will be – large corporations that back Harper & Bush. Note that the Canadian dollar is currently the strongest it has been in 20 years! A strong fiscal policy has caused international investors to value the Canadian dollar high. The US Dollar is at a 20 year low. Bush's overspending and conservative policies caused the international community to 'take flight' from the US dollar.
I am asking you to carefully consider your vote, and to hopefully not vote Conservative. All you have to do is look to the south and you will see the Canada that could be. The Bush & Harper campaigns are too similar for it to be mere coincidence. I have lived in America before – I don’t want to live in any place like that again. Please don’t take away what makes Canada truly special.
Sincerely,
Jayson Kaplan

What's interesting is in fact Harper isn't far-right. Look at right-wing parties in Australia, Germany, New Zealand or even the Republicans. Harper's a down right loonie lefty in comparison. But for the sake of argument, let's say Harper is far-right then Martin and the Liberals are left-wing loonies for sure - redefining marriage which has existed for millenia to include same-sex which only 4 countries on the planet have and even the leftist UN doesn't agree with, they mull over decriminalizing marijuana and won't allow police officers to racial profile because the cops might hurt somebody's feelings whether they're a terrorist or not. That's a far-left agenda folks. Equally "S.C.A.R.Y." in this voter'mind.
right on the money spinks, the only loonies is someone crazy enough to vote liberal this election & endorse their corruption, scandles, fear & smear campaign.
mark my words, this election will go down in the history of our great country as the 'WORST EVER' in our history on the part of the liberals & the campaign that 'THE LIBERALS' brought 'AMERICAN STYLE' gutter attack ads & campaigning to canada. SHAME!. :-(
a HORRIABLE DISASTER & I THANK GOD IM 'NOT' A LIBERAL! LOL !
Spinks, thanks. Your comments have completley convinced me not to vote Cons. You have re-inforced the S-C-A-R-Y part of Harper by expressing your views. You agree with racial profiling. What happened to equal rights? Do you live on Mars because you're so behind times.
T.Y I do not care for any political party but I am disappointed by you. You disapprove of smear campaign and then proceed with smear. Very contradictory.
Actually 9:50 I was illustrating what a left-wing agenda is. However, since you asked, yeah I have no problem with police doing racial profiling as part of intelligence gathering. Racial profiling is not pulling over every person of a certain race and strip-searching them as some would you have you believe. It's being cognizant of reality and it's smart investigative work. Terrorist attacks on the U.S. in the past 10 years have been done by radical Muslims, that's 100%. So should they be looking for little old Chinese ladies or 12 year old white girls because it's fair?!? Not if you want to protect your country. When used as an investigative techinque I'm all for it. I would not be for it, if it was to discriminate people because of the colour of their skin. That's not what this is about. This is about making sure planes aren't hijacked, rammed into buildings with innocents killed and with Osama making threats once again, we would be wise to not handcuff the police from doing their job. This is where the bleeding hearts just don't get it until of course it's their relative killed in a terrorist attack then the accusations fly that the police didn't do enough.
Oh La la: Spinks your remarks must be brought to the attention of media. You believe in racial profiling and saying that is Harper philosophy. If I am black and born and brought up in this country then I should be profiled and your superior race should not be. You sound like KKK member.
Wow 10:14, you just don't get it do you? Great, call the media and let them know that some guy you never met disagrees with you on an issue. I'll wait for the live trucks. LOL.
This is in reply to Mr. Kaplan...welcome back to Canada...I agree with you wholeheartedly!!!!
