So every time one soldier is killed, keep in mind there are thousands deployed overseas, we should lower flags to half-staff? Get real.
Yah, it's so confusing when they lower it to half mast. What if they have to lower it a lot, geez, that means I have to look at a flag flying at half mast more often than once or twice. So what if somebody died, I mean come on, the most important thing is that we have to look at the flag and don't want to be reminded that a soldier died. When I look up and see a flag I damn well want it all the way up, the last thing I want to be reminded of is death.
Here's an idea, cut the damn pole in half, then its always at half mast. Real.
53rd? When did the US go to 52 states? This is one time I have to admit, I don't get it.
If Harper dies it will be at half-mast. Why not when a soldier dies. Do not tell me Harper represents the whole country because so does the soldier. What is so special about Harper? There must not be discrimination. Our soldiers are dying for the country although I believe that we must not fight Bush’s war.

To the comments above- That is exactly why this government has decided NOT to lower the flag to half mass,Indeed so you won't be reminded that our brothers and sisters are dying over seas and or half way around the world with no real just cause for being there in the first place.
If CANADA is going to give up its peace keeping title for a new form of battle mode then by all means please lower the flag to half mass and as the comment says above we will see it all the time.
Here is the great thing about that.
Our children will start asking questions about why the flag is and has been at half mass for some time and we can start answering them with the truth and with honesty as to why this is happening since god only knows we will not include this new activity within the walls of our PUBLIC school system which in itself is a tradgity to the next generation in this Country.
Canadian are too chicken to demand from our government the reason for not lowering the flag ....
also we should even demand our gorvernment why are we at war but this will never happen because as Canadians we are not or never will be united and demand things that we want ....

Come on, everyone, this is getting to be an old Story, and it has been in the news for the last week or mnore. I love and appreciate the sacrifice that our Brave Men and Women in Uniform have made, and are continuing to make on behalf of our Nation of Canada. However to say that we are fighting a War that was started by President Bush, is taking it too far and anyone who would say that doesn't know what they are talking about. this war was started by those Demented muslim radicals who blew up the world trade Center Towers and thousands of innocent men, women, and children including a good many Canadian citizens. I think that we all ought to remember that if thay had not bombed the United States,the coalitian forces probably would not be there right now. oh for your information, we are there to fulfill our commitment as a Nato and alied forces those who are so bloody negative on this this issue of our troops being over there had better get through their thick heads, that they would be thinking quite differently if those murdering slime ball rag heads had bombed our Nation's capital or, worse, half of Canada.
I think you are all wrong about becoming the next state, it will only happen to the provinces east of Quebec. Those 4 provinces will be the next state.
Mackay, how many people were from Afghanistan or Iraq who attacked world trade centre? Get your facts right. They were Arabs from Saudi Arabia and places like that. Get your facts right. It is Bush's war and he does not want his soldiers killed in Afghanistan anymore and found us the patsies the Canadian Government or more specifically Harper Government.
Mr. Mackay's blatant racism aside, those with 'thick heads' are clearly the ones who don't even know the facts of the story. The 'murderers' were american citizens who were from Saudi Arabia. They might as well have attacked Chile for all the good it did the 'war on terror'.
Those with the thick heads are those who refuse to face reality. People don't fly planes into buildings for no reason. There is a reason Norway or Argentina didn't have planes flown into their skyscrapers.
Those with the thick heads might try pondering the fact that the US would be over there regardless of 911, in fact they were there long before. Those with thick heads might at least pay attention to what was said by the chief terrorist-that they want the US out of Saudi Arabia.
Those with thick heads might ask the simple question of why a government has troops in another country, particularly in almost every country in the middle east. There is one terrorist nation that has bases in virtually every country of the world-and it isn't Afghanistan.
We know why they are there-oil. In fact if those with thick heads could actually read something other than the propaganda line they would know that the US State Department clearly said that that is why they are in the middle east and why they plan on staying there. They even flat out said that the US runs the world and has to act proactively to make sure that they continue to rule the world-and that means controlling the middle east. The State Department even came out and said that the US doesn't actually even need the oil-it gets more oil from itself, Canada, Venezuela, and Africa. If it drilled in the Artic it wouldn't even need Saudi oil.
In fact, if Reagan had continued Carter's programs of conservation, and enforcing efficiency laws on american automakers, by 1987 the US would have been self sufficient in gas.
However,the State Department clearly came out and said that the middle east is far too important a strategic area to let fall into the hands of any other power that might challenge the US.
Those with thick heads might want to read up on the fact that the attack on Afghanistan was planned as early as two years before 911, the attack on Iraq was planned the year Bush was 'elected'.
Of course we shouldn't be surprised when those with 'thick heads' can't even get the most basic of facts right:

The above is quite true, that without 911 coalition troops would not be there because there'd be no coalition-maybe. Whether there would be another reason conconcted we don't know, but all we have to do is remember the rampant propaganda that came out before the first gulf war and how many countries quickly jumped into the 'coalition' when Saddam did to Kuwait what the US had just finished doing in Panama.
Those with thick heads might also want to at least try to wrap their brain matter around the fact that only one country in this world has been found guilty of international terrorism-and that's the United States. Not Afghanistan, not even Iraq. There's a reason that when a crime is committed police first check out the people with a criminal record.
Those with thick heads might want to try expanding those few remaining brain cells large enough to realize that our 'good friends' to the south are now in the tenth year of an illegal trade war that has put thousands of honest hard working canadians out of work. The 'good friends' also bought up virtually all of the meat processing plants in Alberta, then cut off meat exports based on one animal, when we now know that within the US they had their own mad cow samples.
This resulted in thousands more canadians losing their jobs, and ironically, a federal aid package that went to the same american companies who had made a fortune on the high price of beef in canada.
Those with thick heads might want to remember the potato embargo the US imposed several years ago which put tremendous hardship on PEI'ers adn NB farmers for no reason except the baseless 'claim' of a fungal scare that was more prevalent in US potatoes than canadian ones.
Those with 'thick heads' might want to realize that our 'good friends' to the south helped subsidize a california company which sued the Canadian government for banning MMT in gasoline. This cancer causing and nerve damage agent is now in all our gasoline-take a deep whiff next time you fill up at the pumps. MMT has been banned in every country of the world, yet we get to breathe it in, even get it into our water system thanks to the lawsuit of our 'good friends'.
You might want to think of the multi billion dollar lawsuit brought by the good friends at The UPS Store, which also is suiing our government, so remember that every time you go in there, you're paying twice.
Our 'good friends' have our nation locked into an energy contract which means that we cannot decrease the supply of gas going to the states even if our nation suddenly hits an energy crisis and needs that energy ourselves. Of course we do need it, but because of Nafta this tiny province has to spend money it doesn't have to build a nuclear plant to provide its energy since it can't access that gas that runs right through the province south.
That is just the tip of the iceberg about our 'good friends' down south. Those with 'thick heads' might want to at least try to contemplate those things before they go around insulting the people who have the gall to disagree with their views.
They might also want to remember that this "President" was not even legally elected his first term, and that considerable evidence points to rampant electoral fraud in both the elections which barely put him into office.
Those thick headed writers might also want to remember that most polls have a majority of americans disagreeing with their country's foreign policy, and that only 30% of the population even put this 'President' into office (almost half of americans don't even vote federally). They might also want to consider that even mainstream american press writers are calling for impeachment, in fact some groups are claiming that Bush deserves the death penalty far more than many of the people from Texas he sent to the execution chamber.
Those with thick heads might want to read some of the mainstream american press like the Journal of American Foreign Policy who have written that a coalition of states, led by China, should actively turn against the US and stop their illegal rampages.
But perhaps we're asking too much of our thick headed commentors out there.
8:37 you are absolutely right. A great analysis. Unfortunately there are too many “thick heads”. Luckily vast majority of Americans are not thick heads and disagree with Bush, the moron. US government and U.S establishment is nobody’s friend – rich and powerful – are no body’s friends. They only know how to look after themselves but there are some thick heads who do not understand this dilemma. Now we have a Prime Minister who is completely thick head. It is a tragedy for Canada. I am ashamed to call this man as my Prime Minister. As a starter why is he letting our men and women getting killed in Afghanistan? Because this thick head is a puppet to another thick head called Bush.
