ARE THE IRVINGS ANTI-CATHOLIC????

irving3, originally uploaded by Oldmaison.

Why the heck are the Irvings telling New Brunswickers this story?

The Irvings always seem to print bad stories about the Catholic Religion.

Priest admits to stealing $2-M

FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) - A priest who enjoyed exotic vacations and drove fancy cars has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $2 million from his parish, a judge said Thursday.

As part of a plea bargain, Rev. Joseph Hughes agreed to return the money to the Church of the Holy Cross in Rumson and pay $120,229 US in taxes.

Superior Court Judge Bette Uhrmacher will determine whether Hughes should be fined when he is sentenced next month. Prosecutors plan to recommend that Hughes serve five years in prison.

The priest's lawyer and the prosecutor would not comment because of a gag order imposed by the judge.

Hughes, who led the parish for 16 years, had set up a secret account in a local bank and deposited church money into it, prosecutors have said. He also used a church credit card for personal reasons.

His pilfering, which extended over a seven-year period, was discovered during a church audit triggered by anonymous telephone calls and letters to the Diocese of Trenton.

Now you think the newspapers should suppress true news stories???! It's not an Irving News story, it's an American Press wire story, which meanhs hundreds of papers across North America will run it. And, well, the man has admitted he did it! Where's the anti-Catholicism???

Gotta agree with anonymous on this one. It's legitimate news Charles.

Let us face it. It is there because it is true. There is no anti-Catholics here. That is the way it happened. May be the whole world is against Catholics when stories about pedophile priests are published which is realty too.

The anti catholicism is that it is even in the newspaper. Some priest from someplace far away stole some money, so what? Go check court records, how many embezzlement trials do you think are going on across north america. In fact I know of plenty within Irving companies, but how often do you ever hear a story with an irving company mentioned in it.

When those who are pledged to be good are bad, it is important.

5:07 PM is wrong. Look at the judge from Miramichi. He embezzled few thousands dollars and he was all over the media and is sitting in the jail. Priest embezzled $5 million. He should be put in jail with that Massouvi guy.

Dale Graham spend $2300 on his restaurant and spend 9 days in Las Vegas instead of 3 days, he was supposed to,he was all over the news. I do not see any bias in case of the priest. If anything they get off so easy so often.

The difference 5:07 is the criminal charge. Just because you think there's embezzlement somewhere doesn't make it so. There needs to be charges laid. If you have evidence of a cover-up, bring it forward, otherwise friend you're blowing smoke.

In fairness, to taint the entire Catholic Church with this brush is unfair. Sadly some people read stories like this and are left with that impression. While cases of priests seducing young men into homosexual sex makes big news, they're a small minority of all the priests. The vast majority do not engage in such activity. However reporting the facts does not make a paper anti-catholic. Only if they were to paint the entire Church that way. The TJ nor AP did that.

I believe that my point is that if this would have happen here in New Brunswick?

The American media would have never printed the story.

The Irvings should have just left this story alone.

Maybe but it hardly makes the Irvings anti-Catholic.

Agree with Spinks.
