Gosh, wouldn't it have been nice if Andy had thought of introducting a bill TEN YEARS AGO or any time since while his party was in power??!! Talk about playing to the public!

Hello anonymous 11:20 PM

Hi, my name is Harold Doherty. The picture of the boy with autism on this blog is a picture of my son Conor. Because of him I have been actively involved with autism advocacy at both the provincial and federal level for the past 7 years.

After knocking on Andy Scott's door for a few years I criticized Andy Scott publicly a couple of years ago for not pushing forward with a National Autism Strategy.

Having said that I respectfully disagree with your opinion that Andy is "playing to the public" today. He has taken up the autism cause with a vengeance. I know first hand the tremendous effort he has put in to his private members bill calling for a national autism strategy. He has worked with autism advocates including the Autism Society New Brunswick, he has lobbied his colleagues in the House of Commons and federal civil servants.

Andy has worked with the amazing students in Greg Peters Leo Hayes High School class. They have been in the forefront of this effort last year and this year. I have spoken with them last year in their class and two of these fine young people attended the ASNB Annual General Meeting on Andy Scott's invitation.

Andy Scott has carried the National Autism Strategy to the House of Commons where a decision will be made. I am very very happy to have Andy Scott, Peter Stoffer, Rugy Dhalla all who spoke yesterday fighting for the autism cause in the House of Commons. And I am thrilled to see the amazing Leo Hayes High School student playing such a big role in bringing this forward.

I may be wrong but I believe that Andy Scott's bill will be passed late in November. I believe that we will then have a serious commitment from government to a National Autism Strategy. If that is playing to the public then I say LET THE PLAY BEGIN!!!!

Harold Doherty, it is not a bill. It is a motion. Even if it is passed it does not bind anyone and government is not obligated to act on it.
