That's hardly Tankers fault, he didnt make the rules. Blame your precious liberals for this one. No doubt the first of many where blame will be cast everywhere but with Graham.
Why would they? They recalled to get rid of the guy, that's exactly what the liberals should have done. They have the power to stop his paycheque and get something done, they choose not to. That's where the blame belongs.
The legislature is ALWAYS open. There are numerous facilities in there for the public to use, including the library. Even the room is probably open for people to go see where 'democracy is done-sometime in 2007'.
It costs zero, zilch, nada, nothing extra for these lazy clowns to show up for work.
What's odd is how much vitriol is spewed at Charles for 'not working' when these clowns are paid over 100 times as much and will contribute FAR less to society (in particular this year, debatably most years) and yet most New Brunswickers don't even seem to mind. And you wonder why Albertans and Ontarians are pissed off about equalization!
Just for a reminder:
Remember, the house has sat for a total of less than two months this year
Constituency Office Expenses: $15,000 - $25,000
Expenses: $10,000 - $30,000
For example, Jody Carr, a member who lives within driving distance of the legislature, and who wasn't a cabinet member, collected $16,000 in "travel expenses, living and other expenses". I sure hope most of that was 'other expenses'.
Committee Salaries: (0) for many $00-$10,000
To pick on Jody Carr because that was the highest amount, he recieved $10,650 in 2005 for committee work. NONE of those committees resulted in any new legislation, except of course for 'wood supply' where all committee presenters except the few from multinational corporations were ignored (in other words, we might as well have skipped the committee and just got UPN and Irving to write the legislation, they pretty much did anyway.)
His total salary, some of it tax deductible, even more pumped into a comfy retirement, $70,537. Just for some interesting info, the public accounts also show his brother Jack as an employee of the legislature, just in case some of you thought patronage was only a liberal quality. Jack only made $53,000, I suppose that's why he ran for office.
Remember, this is as a regular member, long before he was in the cabinet. And that's just ONE member. Payments to all members: $6 million. That would pay for a LOT of fencing.
If somebody wants to drudge up and say "yeah but they worked during the election". Well, that's not really 'work', particularly when you've got a party behind you, that's extra. The war chest for each party was pumped up by taxpayers to the tune of:
Liberals: $298,000 PC: $307,000
Now that we're way up into the millions, let's put that into perspective, the largest university in the province is UNB. The support they got from government was $41 million. Legislators, with their salaries and expenses, came to $6 million dollars. It costs New Brunswickers one seventh the amount they put into their largest university to pay the salaries of people who worked less than two months this year. Party salaries are separate (though as you can see above they are still mostly paid by New Brunswickers)
To put it into ANOTHER perspective, that amount is MORE than what is contributed to St. Thomas University, and almost as much as for Mount Allison.
And people wonder why other people pay little attention to politics.

For anon 12:55 p.m.
The TORIES recalled the Legislature for 1 day in 1999 to get rid of then speaker John McKay.
Why didn't they change the rules???
Let's put blame where it belongs.

I am not aware of the exact cost, but I am thinking it would cost thousands to open the house for a day. That option is just ridiculous.
And the honourable Tanker Malley is not too honourable if will only resign if given this $12,000.
