The media loves these types of trials because they believe it boosts their ratings.

I believe for trials like this which last numerous weeks the media should follow the story and get the facts BUT then only put it on every second or third night and even then tell their viewers of the case in short format.

Once the case starts coming to a close, focus the real news heavily on the sentencing which would better serve those who most likely want to know why this was able to happen in the first place based on the political will of society to toughen the laws in this Country to prevent horrors like this from igniting in the first place.

As long as the people of Canada are willing to settle for the laws that are in place to deal with criminals and habitual criminals this will only get worst as time progresses within this country if there is no Strong stand for changes to strengthen the laws to go with these brutal crimes of the future.

Two elderly people brutally killed in a small town. The media would be doing the public a disservice by not covering it. I haven't seen anything sensationalistic about the media's coverage. If it's sensational, that's because the facts coming out of the court are sensational. The media have done a very fair and accurate job thus far. To say they're going overboard is to shoot the messenger.

i don't think the media went or is going overboard on this trial. no more than you do when you go on one of your tirades about something.

you even went and talked to one of the victim family members or relatives didn't you.

is it true from one of your other postings, you don't know how to maintain your site, nor do you do any of the work on it yourself ?

just wondering, because whoever does it, did a good lay out for it

Thanks for reminding me. I post my own blogs and pictures on this site.

I don't fool around with the template.

I let WCIE or Computer WCIE take care of that one.

Media coverage? Someone asked me the question so I decided to blog it.

Yes we should all stick our heads in the sand and blame our sensastional media for all lifes problems. Don't think so. If Despres was found not guilty and that was all the media covered how could those at home make an intelligent/ informed decision if it was the right verdict . If he's found guilty then we should know why. As far as I know the media is presenting it as "matter of fact" and thats what we should expect, to have anything less would cast a veil of secrecy on our whole system.

Yes they are going over board with details, more time could be spent on other things.
Most of the time the average person cannot speak or report on other matters because it is before the courts.

This should be the case for this double murder and many other crimes.

This scum doesnot deserve any ink at this present time.

I am all for exposing the Criminal element in our society, Mr. Dupree is getting his time or, day in Court and his right to be heard in a fair trial. that is the right of all Canadian Citizens and for that matter, all Human Beings. have that same right. if he is guiley, I mean truly guilty than he should pay for his crimes that is how the system is supposed to function.

the news media should cover the whole thing but be factual about they are reporting, to to otherwise would be a real dis-service to the public.

I agree that this is something the media needs to cover, to the extent that they feel the public should know. I'm sure they get a bit excited about ratings boosts, but they aren't sensationalizing anything to artifically boost them. I don't agree that tougher laws could have stopped this, it was an isolated incident that came from Depres' own problems, whatever they are. If there is anyway to stop crimes like this, it's implementing and enhancing social programs to help people before they commit crimes. I doubt that Depres cared about the consequences of his actions when he killed that couple, so I can't see tougher laws discouraging anything, and I also can't see him ever getting into a situation where he'll have the opportunity to do something like this again. I also think it's important that people can get a viewpoint from someone like charles, independant reporting with a heart, I read the comments from people on your blog about the depres trial, it seems a bit much to claim your blogging isn't important or isn't journalism.

The fact is this never would have made it to the media had the first judge kept him in jail to await sentencing....it never would have happened at all....I know...I'm the son of one of the victims

I believe the media should be more sensitive to the details of their articles. When the family members read the details of the brutal way they were taken from this world they have a hard time dealing with it. They are trying to remember the way they were before all this happened. I believe the media has a right to let the public know what is going on but, try to imagine if this was your family member. I have been there with the family during court and their home life it is very heart breaking to see them go through this.
