One week left before Tim Smith Memorial for the people who killed themselves because of these dreadful machines.

Word is spreading and many are offering suggestions via-emails or on the streets.

I have to add this little story.

Tim Smith came here last year and he paid for everything.

He paid to make his little memorial which I might add took a lot of time.

He paid for the bouquet of flowers, candles and the bus trip back home.

Anyone who supports his cause can join him on January 12th.

But be warned? It’s going to be cold. I’ll be with him all day long in support and of course to cover his good-hearted gesture.

What’s a little cold when you think of the people who were mentally tortured before killing themselves???

If anyone wishes to help the cause?

Send flowers at the New Brunswick Legislature for January 12th. < If the Quebec security staff doesn’t destroy them? >

If you wish to give help Tim financially or with letters?

Send it to me at

Thanks.....

Charlie I would just like to take a moment to thank you very much for all your support and blogging of this deadly issue and I will see you real soon...Here's to better days ahead for those who are unable to help themselves at this time of need through our Governments greed.....

When can we have a special day where people take note of their personal responsibilities? A day to realize that for 99% of the people, their lives are not shaped by government, corporations, or any outside influence, but rather their lives are the sum total of personal choices.

Good luck, Tim, good for you to be doing something for a cause you believe in. Most of us just complain, but do nothing. My only suggestion might be that instead of flowers people could make a donation to an addiction help association. I don't know if there is addiction's annonymous but that would be a good one. Then people could send a card or pledge card to Tim or yourself for display at the memorial. This would be better use of money than flowers that won't last in the freezing cold.

Isn't everyday a day to take note of their personal responsibilities? Even if you don't think this is an issue, respect the wishes of almost half of New Brunswickers who were silenced after the last referendum. Almost half wanted VLT's completely closed down, so it seems to me that its in pretty bad taste to begrudge a guy making an issue out of this for one measly day a year.

So for almost half of New Brunswickers this is a big issue.

By the way Charles, according to Canada Post your postal code is E3B, not E2B.

Yes, make a charitable donation in memoriam. DON'T waste your money buying flowers.

10:58am: There is no room for personal responsibility on this blog. This is a website for people to blame their life's problems on everything and everyone else, especially anyone with more money than the person complaining.
It's much easier to sit back and make excuses and accusations than to take action for personal life decisions.
It's much easier to sit back and expect our government to hold our hands and stop us from hurting ourselves, and essentially treat us like sheep.

The truth of the matter is the Government should not be taking advantage of those who, for whatever reason, have the potential to be addicted to these machines. While every person ultimately bears responsibility for their actions, the fact is once an addiction of any sort takes hold of someone the thinking process of the individual becomes skewed in favour of satisfying that addiction.
These machines are designed to have maximum adiction potential in their users. (While I have no knowledge of the inside process of making these machines I can only imagine a team of psychologists and advertising people sittng in a room deciding how many flashes or dings per minute will illicit the most hypnotic state) The potential for financial loss due to gambling is also devastating and often much more rapid that some other addictions. There is only so much alcohol you can drink in a day before you pass out and only so much crack before your body quits on you, but there is almost no limit to the financial loss that can come from gambling, placing ever higher bets until the money runs out and it goes fast once the addiction cycle has begun.
Shame on our government for not stepping up and taking a little more responsibility for the well being of it's citizens.
Good luck in your fight Tim

Yes, what our poster two posts up seems upset about is that people here refuse to act like sheep. Sheep would just sit there like they do and not say anything except "eh, its their own fault, got nothin to do with me".

It takes some brains to realize that there is a reason why virtually no place in the world has a gambling setup like New Brunswick.

It also takes some brains to research how they rigged the referendum to deny people their basic democratic rights. Maine is quite similar to NB, and their referenda, like polls in NB, show that most people do not want VLT's at all, let alone being so accessible.

As for the personal responsibility crap, we know that that is complete garbage simply by reading the blog. Virtually no comments have been from people refusing to take personal responsibility. Even in the case of somebody making an observation about Rogers Cable had readers posting comments all over him. If anything, this is a blog where people are FORCED to take personal responsibility if they have the guts to come out and say anything.

There has never even been an asking for handouts from Charles or any other poor person, what there has been is criticism for the refusal to grant basic human rights to people, that has nothing to do with personal responsibility. I want my tax dollars going to keep cities clean, people educated, and people in a minimal standard of living, not going to Irving for a gas terminal that only gives eight jobs, foreign forestry companies who are going to lay waste to the forests then leave when its of no further use, and the wealthiest 20% of people in the province.

So contrary to the above, this is about taking personal responsibility and doing something with it. Charles is personally responsible for this site, and he takes hell whenever he gets out of line. The only ones who are not taking personal responsibility are those New Brunswickers who sit back and ignore politics and let their government get away with anything.

Government needs to take an active role and right now is the time stop putting off. The money they make off of people who can't stop this addiction is why they do nothing. Put the machines in buildings where you have to be wealthy and let's get our money from them. Taxes should be paid off so people wouldn't feel the need to gamble for a better life. Living on very little is hard and frankly a few hundred a month is not possible to have a quality of life. Our politician sometimes spend that on one meal; disgusting but they don't care because it goes on and on.
