"I don't know if I made a mistake of not?" First learn to write a single sentence right.

You will sell your mama for publicity and get attention. That is how publicity and attention hungry you are.

RCMP considering investigation of SJ police

SAINT JOHN - Despite a request by the Public Safety minister, the RCMP has not committed to investigate allegations of perjury by the Saint John Police Force, filed by Fredericton blogger Charles LeBlanc.

"It's in the public interest to determine whether the allegations are substantiated before subjecting somebody to the stigma associated with a criminal investigation," said Staff Sgt. Colin Farrar, a reviewer in the RCMP criminal operations branch in Fredericton.

"It's going through the channels," he said. "What response we're going to provide has yet to be determined."

Public Safety spokeswoman Patricia Hyland suggested it's simply a matter of semantics.

"The minister (John Foran) asked them to investigate (in accordance with the Police Act.) That seems to be what they're doing. They're looking at the file."

Normally, complaints against a municipal police force are handled by the New Brunswick Police Commission. But the matter was referred to Public Safety because the perjury allegation is criminal in nature and falls outside the commission's mandate, said Hyland.

LeBlanc alleges a Saint John police officer lied on the stand during his trial last November on charges of obstructing a police officer, for which he was subsequently acquitted.

The officer testified that he only deleted one photo from LeBlanc's camera when he arrested him during a demonstration at an Atlantica business conference in Saint John in June, 2006. LeBlanc contends an estimated 200 photos were deleted.

"Ask any media or politician. That Charles LeBlanc goes somewhere and takes only one picture is totally absurd," he said Friday. "There was all kinds of action going on there. I just clicked away," said LeBlanc, whose trial garnered much attention, including coverage by the New York Times.

LeBlanc would like to see a public inquiry, but is encouraged the RCMP is now involved.

The Saint John Police Force is aware the minister has asked the RCMP to investigate, said Deputy Chief Bill Reid. He declined to name the officer or officers involved or discuss the nature of the allegation.

"No officers will be suspended at this point in time," he said. "These are nothing more than allegations.

"It will be business as usual and obviously we'll cooperate fully with the RCMP."

Reid did confirm, however, that Chief Al Bodechon sent a letter of apology to LeBlanc in February. "I wanted to apologize to you on behalf of the Saint John Police Force for inappropriately deleting your picture or pictures from your camera," Bodechon wrote.

The letter followed an independent investigation by Cape Breton Regional Police, said Reid. The chief had asked the other force to investigate a complaint by LeBlanc that he was unlawfully arrested, that officers used unnecessary force during his arrest and that his photographs were inappropriately deleted.

The investigation concluded LeBlanc's photo or photos were inappropriately deleted, but found no other wrongdoing, said Reid.

LeBlanc subsequently filed a complaint with the New Brunswick Police Commission, alleging perjury.

Farrar said he hopes a decision on whether to proceed to an investigation will be made within the next week. He expects a few people, "not necessarily" high-ranking officials, will make the decision.

Minister Foran "designated the matter for investigation, in accordance with the Police Act," in a letter to commanding officer of the RCMP's J Division, Assistant Commander Steve Graham, dated July 5, said Hyland.

The minister did not stipulate any time line, she said.

During the Atlantica protest in June, 2006, LeBlanc was pinned to the ground by a police officer and charged with resisting arrest.

LeBlanc, who maintains a politically driven blog, maintains he has the same rights as legitimate journalists and claims he was singled out by police because of the content on his site. He has raised the hackles of some New Brunswickers with his intrusive photos and strong opinions.

Provincial Court Judge William McCarroll ruled LeBlanc was clearly not part of the protest. He was simply plying his trade, taking photos for his blog, and there was no good reason to arrest him, he said.

The judge was also critical of a Saint John police officer for deleting at least one photograph of himself from LeBlanc's camera. He said the officer needed a search warrant to look through the images on the camera, which he did not have.
