Ok….it’s cold out there and it’s once again it’s Anti-Abortion Day in the Capital! Every Tuesday morning for the last 8 years, this woman is protesting in front of the Abortion clinic in Fredericton. I noticed three girls who were the clinic escorts and this time around they were a little friendlier than the last time. I might add the Anglo Society is stationed in front of the Beaverbrook Hotel because the Liberal Federal Caucus is in there at a meeting. Those Bigots are getting up there in age so therefore they find the weather very coold!! Last week, I attended an ADHD support group in the Capital and the parents were concerned of the statement that the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission told the Government that Adults with ADHD are close to mental retardation! Well? I was tired and I wasn’t prepared for a speech because it was the same day that I wrote that I needed some Ritalin because my poor five ADHD brains was really working overtime and I might add it was the same day that Tim Smith ended his hunger strike! But I did give the audience a 30 minutes speech about those people at the Commission. Lets go back to those racist members of the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission for a moment! The report to study Democracy in New Brunswick came out with their report and let me see if I can locate the report on the net? I can’t copy it but anyway my suggestion to the committee of the manner that the Irvings are buying all the newspapers isn’t mentioned? Why is that now? Is it because Brent Taylor <> is on the Commission? Democracy and one owner for all the Newspapers in this province isn’t democracy!!! It’s a dictatorship!!!! It isn’t even mention but they did mention that all people who served on any Commissions should be advertises or screen! Take a close look at those racist members of the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission??? We have a paid Civil Servant who is a convicted thief <> and now is watching after the interest of the Irvings! Those appointed people agreed with the Irvings that people with ADHD are close to mental retardation and Irving supervisors can continue calling minorities’ racial slurs and that’s ok because it’s Irving! This Commission must be eliminated in the year 2005! We New Brunswickers have no rights whatsoever! <> It just burns my mind when I see Paul Martin preaching to the world leaders about Human Rights and we don’t have none in this Province! We New Brunswickers are not allowed to write critical letters to the Editor about the Evil Irving Empire and this is not right! Freedom of speech is done in this Province but mind you the Daily Gleaner <> have been printing my letters but I cannot be nasty like I use to be! In the good old days? I got printed 500 letters in the Irving Papers and many were supportive or negative of the Irvings! But these days, only praising letters of the Evil Irving Empire will hbe printed!!! Germany all over again!!! I still have my own little column in the River Valley News! But the Commission to study Democracy requested that all Commissions change the way they are appointed to their post! This Racist Commission should be screen because in 20 years from now? People are going to find out that we had a Human Rights Commission who were afraid of the Irvings and could be in Irving pocket! They told the Government that minorities could be at the end of a witch hunt therefore it’s ok in this Province! My God? We are behind the time but if you are Gay and you wish to complain about a gay float in a Santa Claus Parade? Those racists members will say- You poor soul!!! Come on in!!! <> I was told that new Irving employees are screen very closely and if they have ADHD??? They are shown the door because they have the backing of those racist members of the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission! As I said in the past and I’ll continue to say - To you people at the Commission? <> don’t make no public appearance because I will be there with my direct approach! I am not one to write the write but I also talk the talk! I might add that Christian Whallen <> soon found that out once he showed up with a meeting on Disable people and Shara Golden <> also know that I mean business once I confronted her in front of 70 people! I speak the truth and I will battle those racist members at the Human Rights Commission till the last day I die!!! This fraud commission must be eliminated in the year 2005!!! Tim Smith has put the spotlight fully on the issue ofvideo lottery terminal (VLT) addiction by virtue ofhis hunger strike carried out in the face of sub-zerotemperatures and heavy wind chills.
While the Saint John native last week was less thanfully satisfied with the answers his actions and theresulting queries on the floor of the legislature byNDP leader Elizabeth Weir - have received, at the veryleast he has reminded us of two important, intertwinedthings.
One is that we as a society still do not really "get"the notion that addiction to VLTs in particular andgambling in general is real. The other is that manygamblers themselves are painfully unaware of the costof their addiction both in terms of dollars and interms of their very lives.
On these pages, we have argued that banning VLTs isneither the answer nor appropriate. On the basis ofthe 2001 referendum, a majority of New Brunswickersagree with our position.
However, the reality exists that gambling is a bigproblem for many people. Even though we would findvirtually nobody who would argue that eithercigarettes or alcohol (two other things that lead tomajor tax revenues for the government and itsprograms) are addictive, there is still an attitudewithin society that gambling is relatively harmless bycomparison.
Even groups that do so much good in society usegambling as a fundraising tool in a way that theywould never even consider for alcohol or tobacco.Anything from a bingo game in a local church to aticket tale for a prize or set of prizes put on by alocal philanthropic organization is an obviousexample.
Tim Smith, who ended his hunger strike after eightdays, has the courage - and was desperate enough - tobe a poster exhibit for all that can go wrong as apart of VLT addiction. He says that he has squanderedover $100,000 in these machines. He has relinquishedhis privacy by making common knowledge the sad factsthat he is a 41-year-old man who was forced to give upcustody of his daughter when he became hooked ongambling machines after becoming unemployed 10 yearsago.
Weir, meanwhile, told the legislature on Tuesday thata Nova Scotia study has found that average losses byVLT gamblers increased by 50 per cent between 1998 and2002.
She said, "I urge this government to stop puttingprofits over health and provide credible research onthis province's addiction to VLTs. Tim Smith'saddiction to VLT has cost him thousands of dollars, asteady job and custody of his children. He wants thisgovernment to acknowledge that the lucrative revenuefrom VLTs comes with a price."
On the heels of Smith's story and Weir's statistics,we are troubled that there is no waiting list fortreatment programs that the province offers forproblem gamblers. While waiting lists for every kindof public ally funded professional help - fromappointments with medical specialists or for medicalprocedures on the one hand to treatments to help thoseaddicted to everything from alcohol to Dilaudid - arehuge, there seems to be a lack of awareness amongpeople addicted to gambling that they have a problem,that they need help.
We would argue that this lack of waiting lists doesnot mean that there is not a problem. We wouldencourage the government to ponder carefully theresults of comprehensive studies like the one nowbeing carried out by Dr. Richard Nicki and hisassociates at UNB. As we reported on Monday, theseresearchers are undertaking a new three-part VLT studyaimed at understanding what attracts gamblers tocertain machines or games.
UNB actually has a lab set up with commercial VLTmachines that study participants are asked to play.
The machines are not altered to pay out anydifferently than ones found in any area bar, butparticipants in the study will be restricted in theamounts they can bet and for how long they can play.
Although UNB has been researching problem gambling forthe past eight years, it's only in the last year thatit has used a lab setting to study gamblerpreferences.
Study participants are invited to rate the games andtheir effects.
"We have them give us ratings about how exciting theyfind the games. Do the games make them forget theirproblems? Do they feel in control?" Nicki said.
Certain types of gamblers may be more vulnerable tocertain types of games. The UNB research will try todetermine if there are gender differences andpreferences that emerge from the way VLTs are designedto pay out. Another aspect of the research will lookat gamblers' fallacies.
The research project, likely to wrap up in February,will look at clues and indicators that can help toidentify the potential for gambling problems.
The work is vital the problem is real. Tim Smith isproof of that.

Dear Editor: When I first arrived in the capital, Isoon found out that Fredericton was a bureaucraticcity.
On many occasions, these bureaucrats would be in theirown little world and too busy to stop and to chat withme about my protest against the use of Ritalin.
But not to notice a little five-year-old walking alonefrom Regent Street?
This tells me that the citizens must open their eyesand notice the surroundings.
This shameful episode sure left a black eye on thiscity.

We Believe:Peaceful protest can bring issues to thepublic'sattention
Hunger striker Tim Smith left Fredericton last weekhaving achieved something important: he convinced fourcabinet ministers to meet with him.
Few will want to emulate his example, but Mr. Smith'sself-imposed ordeal illustrates two lessons. Peacefulprotest can bring attention to bear on an issue inways that voting and letter writing cannot.Legislators and ordinary voters are more easily movedby issues that have a personal dimension.
New Brunswickers have seen many protests recently.Most were ineffective. The largest and loudest ofthese protests - when 3,000 Miramichiers angered byimpending hospital cuts converged on the capital lastsummer - was probably counterproductive, because itmade the protesters seem less reasonable than thegovernment they were challenging.
Mr. Smith didn't get everything he wanted fromgovernment. But he did get an audience, and a promisethat cabinet would consider two of hisrecommendations. We attribute his success to thenature of his protest, the underlying issue, and thetiming.
Mr. Smith's protest was difficult to ignore. Aself-proclaimed gambling addict, he donned a sandwichboard accusing the government of being indifferent tolives ruined by video lottery terminals. Having losthis income, possessions and family, Mr. Smith riskedthe only thing he has left - his health.
The issue of whether the revenue produced by VLTsoffsets the misery they spawn was not settled by theVLT referendum. So, the prospect of a man who claimedto be a victim of VLTs starving in front of thelegislature because he had nothing left to losetouched people in a way that other protests have not.The fact Mr. Smith held his hunger strike in Januarymade his protest insurmountable. Every day he spentfreezing and hungry drew more attention to theseriousness of his allegations.
Good decision-making relies on being able to viewissues on both an abstract level and a human level.Peaceful protesters such as Mr. Smith succeed to theextent that they return attention to the humanconsequences of political policies.
The challenge of governing well is to anticipate thehuman impact of decisions - to consider the needs ofMr. Smith, even when he is not at the legislature -and even though the politicians involved may not knowMr. Smith, or anyone quite like him.

7-It is unfortunate the way Mr. Burke is being attacked in your blog. A racist is a racist and in this case Bernard Lord is a racist. It feels the same way as you felt when someone made racial slurs directed at you and that was regrettable and this one is too.
You may have personal difference with Mr. Burke and we all have difference but those differences must not get in the way when it comes to racism. Let us face it Mr. Lord behaved in a racist manner and that makes him racist just the way you feel about Irving employees who hurled racial slurs at you. Mr. Lord being racist disqualifies him to be premier. If he needs cultural sensitivity, as a consultant said, after two terms in office then he must have never held that office to start with. .

Studies by psychiatristshave shown that children with attention deficitdisorder are four times more likely than average tosuffer mental problems later in life. Researchers atHarvard Medical School have also warned that themisdiagnosis of ADHD in children, followed by theprescription of Ritalin, could lead to a greaterlikelihood of depression in adulthood. Dr StephenLadyman, the health minister, who released the figuresthis week to Tory health spokesman Tim Loughton, saidthat "a treatment programme" for ADHD should not "relyon medication alone". The Department of Health added that guidelines fromthe National Institute for Clinical Excellence saidthat children on Ritalin should "receive regularmonitoring and be taken off the drug if there was noimprovement of symptoms". 59-Yes, no doubt like any other small community. Kids here also sell their ritalin. Now, my nephew, who shall remain nameless of course, told his mom a few years ago that ritalin was doing nothing for him. So, he stopped taking it. Unlike other kids who keep the prescriptions going, he stopped. He is now able to control himself. I guess with maturity some things "calm" down eh...I dunno...Ritalin is not the only drug here, there is marijuana, cocaine, LSD, heroin amongst others.

I was very upset when I first heard about this

To the editor,

When I first arrive in the Capital, I would soon
find out Fredericton was a bureaucratic City!
On many occasions, these bureaucrats would be in
their own little world therefore too busy to stop and
chat with me about my protest against the use of
Ritalin.
But not to notice a little five year old walking
alone from Regent Street to the Superstore?
This tells me that the citizens must open their
eyes and notice the surrounding around them.
This shameful episode sure left a black eye for
this City.

Ok, I received an email from Tim Smith this
morning and everything is ok with him after a good
night sleep! I hope that Tim Smith and the Bishops
succeed with their suggestions to the Government.
Mr Bishop was on the news last evening and he

machines down on Sundays therefore giving a chance for

I said - I hear nothing, I see nothing but I was
100% right!!!
Because a few weeks earlier, I wrote that racial
Jokes are coming from both political Parties!
But lets face facts here! T.J. is not a Saint! He
loves to agitate as much as the other politicians on
the floor and for you long time readers?
You remember when he was distracting me while I
was making a presentation to a committee about the Dog
issue! I might add that he or I haven’t had a
conversation since I wrote that update! < Ohh well!

But mind you? If the issue of racial jokes
continues to be in the limelight? This could hurt T.J.
Burke to be re-elected!
A few months ago, a teacher told me that never
again will he bring his students to the Legislature!
The students couldn’t believe the attitude of these

take their Ritalin!
I guess this circus has been going on since the

Yes, the last 24 hours has been very hectic andeverything is back to normal! After eight days, the protester - Tim Smith hasended his hunger strike and is now on a bus on routeto Saint John! Thank God for that! Everything started to move very quickly yesterdaymorning at 11:00am! While walking in the hallway of the Legislature? Ibumped into Margaret-Ann Blaney. I asked the Ministerif she had a couple of minutes. I told her that it wasok if the Government ignored me during my protest! But this here protester Tim Smith is verydetermine and serious about the issue of VLT’S! TheGovernment must talk with this guy because if youdon’t? He will die!!!! She quickly told me that she’ll chat with the guyright now! I told her that is not the way to do it! You mustinvite the guy inside in a room and chat with theprotester in a very serious manner! I walked with the minister to her SUV and she toldme that she’ll look into my concerns! Of course, Iknow that this Government don’t communicate withProtesters and what a person does compare to what theysay is two different issues! Hours later, I was introduced to Don and his wifeSandie Bishop from Saint John. This couple lost their son because of the VLT’S!He committed suicide 6 years ago because of hisaddiction and they have been very outspoken againstthese machines. The poor mother said- If I wasn’t so old? I wouldjoin Tim Smith! It’s very cold out there! I chatted over the phone with this couple aroundfive years ago. They remembered our conversationbecause I used to write a lot of letters to the editoron this issue! It’s not that I only fought this veryemotional issue once the protest began! I have beenfighting against these machines for a long while andthe Bishops knew it! They told Tim Smith that Charleshas been outspoken on this issue for years! The Bishops went to the gallery and listened tothe speeches of the politicians. I visited the Sergeant At Arms office! Whilechatting with Dan Bussieres, Terry Andow <> walked in and said - Charles? The protester ismeeting right now in a room with Wayne Steeves , Margaret-Ann Blaney Jeannot Volpe <> and ElvyRobichaud <>!!!! I quickly gave the Bureaucrat a thumb ups and Isaid to myself - Boy? That Margaret-Ann sure movedfast on that issue!!!! I was very very very surprised that four Ministerswould meet with the Protester while the House wasstill in session! You got to understand that the Lord Governmentonly has one seat majority so therefore they have tobe present at all times! I quickly walked upstairs to the Gallery and toldthe Bishops of the good news! After close to an hour we still couldn’t locateTim Smith. The Bishops decided to call it a day andwent home. Earlier that day, Nicole Carlin from ATV asked theProtester if he would give a live interview with SteveMurphy in Halifax? I told Tim that this is a opportunity of alifetime and he should do it! At the end, he did but I’ll get to that later. I couldn’t locate Tim so therefore I believe thathe went over my place because I gave him the keys tomy place that morning! I told him to leave the Legislature and go to myplace before the Live interview so he could relax andconcentrate what he’s going to say! This is LIVE TV!!!! Once over my place, he was no where to be found.Thank God that I had a spare key! Then I heard on CBC radio that the protest wasover and Tim enjoyed a nice bowl of soup in theCafeteria with Margaret-Ann on his side. I never once taught of going to look for him atthe Cafeteria. I watched his interview on Television and he spokejust like an expert! My God? Can this man ever speak from the heart! Hedid an excellent job!!!! He was so good that after the interview? SteveMurphy phoned the ATV office in Fredericton and toldthe reporter to tell Tim Smith that he did a fantasticjob!!! The reporter told Tim that she has been aroundfor over two years and this was the first time thatSteve Murphy ever phone after an interview! Last night, I had to attend a support group forADHD but I’ll get to that one in days ahead! I spokeat the meeting but I was exhausted from running aroundall day! After the meeting, a woman dropped me off at theShelter and I asked for Tim Smith? Once he came outside, he gave me a big hug and itwas the first instance since the protest began that hehad a huge smile on his face. He was on cloud nine!!!! The protest was over and he was looking forward tosee his kids in Saint John! He spoke very very very highly of Margaret-AnnBlaney! He praised her like she was God! He told me that they had a good two hours parentchat! He added that the meeting was sometime emotionaland happy! After ten minutes of listening to all the stories<>…lol..I love to talk!!!...lol… I asked Tim a direct question? I asked- Ok? Whathappens if the Government don’t take your issuesseriously? Once you leave the Capital, the Governmentjust ignores you? What happens there? His eyes open up and he quickly said- I don’t wantto talk about that!!! It was just like telling him that his kids wereinvolved in an accident! He quickly changed the subject and continue topraise Margaret-Ann Blaney! I wish him a very good night and went home! This would be the last time that he’ll have tosleep in the shelter. I bet tonight he’ll be please tosleep in his own private bed!!! This morning, the doorbell rang at 7:45am and itwas Tim Smith. He dropped over the winter boots I gave him and hewanted to invite me for lunch! I was still half asleep so we had a nice coffee!!!It sure was nice to see him eat! We walked into the Legislature and I introducedhim to a few politicians. It sure bought me back intime when my protest was over! It took me half a day to shake everyone hands whosupported me during my six months protest! We went to Tim Horton and it was really nice thistime around because he also ate with me! Last week, Ifelt guilty to eat a Boston Cream in front of theProtester but I just love my Boston Cream!..lol.. It was time for Tim Smith to leave the Capital. Iwalked with him to the Bus Station and before he wentinside the Bus, we gave each other a little hug and hethanked me very much to stand beside him during theprotest with my updates and the little connection Ihave! I told Tim that the people who committed suicidebecause of these dreadful machines are looking down athim from the sky and are saying- Good work Tim! Another individual told him not to give upbecause his Brother blew his head off because of thesedreadful Machines! He’s hanging in there and he was interviewed thisMorning! Yesterday morning someone asked me if I could add
this individual on my email list?
I told the person there would be no problem. I
added their name and send the person my update.
Minutes later, I received an email asking me to please
remove this individual from my list!
You could say this was the shortest individual in
history to be on my list!....lol…lol..lol…
This person works for an advertisement firm so
maybe my anti- Irving stories scared the day light out
of this individual! ...lol….
I saw the person afterward, the individual told
me- My Father told me believe in half of what you see
and nothing from what you hear!!! But I did let it
known that I don’t lie in my updates and it’s all La
Veriter!!!
Speaking of the Irvings? Someone from Saint John
sent me an email telling me that a letter I sent to
the HERE paper is printed in the Newspaper!
There’s only one itty bitty problem? I didn’t
send this email as a letter to the Editor? Let me see
how they put it???
If it’s only a way for the Irvings to dis-credit
me? Well? What can a person do? I’ll be very upset!

Yesterday afternoon, I noticed someone walking
with signs behind his back and in the front!
The guy name is Tim Smith and he’s from Saint
John!
He’s against the VLT’S in this Province. He told
me during the last ten years, that he has lost
$140,000 in these machines and he knows a close friend
who committed suicide because of these dreadful
addictive machines.
He’s in his forties and at first, I guess he
wanted to chained himself in the hallway of City Hall
but he woke up one morning and decided to go at the
Legislature.
He has two daughters at home and he has been on a
hunger strike for two days!
There’s only one itty bitty problem with this
protest!!!
IT’S COLD OUT THERE!!!!! BRRRRRRR…..I just had a
chat with the guy and my toes are still cold!!!!
He’s lucky because he hasn’t felt the cold
Northern winds in front of the Legislature.
Last evening, he slept over at the Shelter and I
went over to see if he was ok? He told me that his
feet were cold so I bought the guy a nice pair of wool
soxes which was given to me by someone during my
protest!
I noticed in this morning paper Telegraph Journal

I was protesting in a tent for 50 days until the
Irving Newspapers covered my protest! This guy protest
for six hours and he gets the publicity????

IRVING INTERFERENCE???? YOU TELL ME!!!!
But I’m glad for the guy! Ok…he wears a pair of
earmuffs and a couple of sweaters.
I’m a pretty good judgement of character and he
sounds very determine in his fight!
He told me that he has died ten times over during
these last 10 years and he’s not afraid to die! He
just doesn’t want to become just a another statistic
for the Government.
He could go and blow his head off but he has two
young daughters at home.
I told the protester where he could use the
washroom at the BeaverBrook Hotel. He told me that
once the sun hides behind the clouds? It’s very cold!
I told the guy that I know all about it!!...lol
Last night, he told me that Rolly McIntyre <
Liberal MLA > came to chat for him and he’s going to
invite the protester inside the Legislature and
introduce him.
Hey? This is good because I sure wasn’t invited
inside during my protest but I reminded the protester
that it was the Liberals who first introduced these
machines in the 80s?
This morning, Rick Doucet an MLA from Charlotte
County! <> walked by and I shouted that he
should chat with the protester! Of course, the guy
noticed that I shouted at everyone who walked by! I
can’t help myself because I’m an huge
agitator!!!...lol….
Don’t forget this area was my home for six months
so therefore I know a lot of people!
Rick Doucet came to chat with the protester and I
reminded the young MLA that it was the Liberals who
began this mess!
He told me - Yes, it is true but we can still try
to find some solution to this very emotional problem!
One suggestion Tim Smith said was these VLT’S
should be shut down on Sundays and during the month of
December!!!
Sounds like a good idea to me. Maybe just maybe
that if a person don’t play these addicted machine for
one day? He/she would maybe kick this very expensive
habit????
Tim said - It’s like the Government won the Super
7 every Friday evening! The Government collects 2.5
million dollars every week from the less dreadful
citizen. He says that the Government is collection 125
Million dollars every year from a population of only
750,000!!!
Something is very very very wrong with this
picture!!!
The cash is flowing but something must give in at
the bottom! Some families are really hurting because
of these machines!!!
I noticed while he chatted with the MLA? He began
to show some emotion while he was speaking about his
kids at home.
I might admit that this act really touch me and I
notice that the MLA was also touch!
He told me the story of a guy in Saint John. He
collects empty bottles all day long and at the end of
the day he walks close to two miles at a bottle
exchange to get his money. He quickly runs to a
machine and loses his money in 5 minutes! Works all
day collecting empties and loses everything in 5
minutes!
But gambling has been around for centuries but it
seems to be worst these days!
If I was this protester? I would have pitch an
winterizes tent! At least, he would be away from the
cold Northern winds!
I wish that he wouldn’t go on a hunger strike
because his body surely wouldn’t stand the cold
weather!
But he’s a very determine individual! Someone
came over this morning from CBC and he was wearing a
Irving winter hat.
I told the guy to get rid of that hat! He quickly
changed his hat inside out! He gave a number to the
Protester to told him to phoned CBC collect in Saint
John.
The protester asked me if I knew the guy because
I ordered him to change his hat and he did!!!
…lol…..lol
I told the guy that I didn’t know him but he knew
me!!!..lol…
I would shout at the politicians who’s running
inside the Legislature to come and chat with the
Protester!
Especially the P.C.’S! I told the protester that
he should stay on the right side of the Legislature
because this is the area the politicians goes outside
to enjoy a smoke!
Sh@t over 1,000 words already! I got more issues
but they will have to wait in the morning! Ok…if you
have some nice winter boots or a winterizes Jacket?
Drop it over or lend it to the Protester! I gave
him my radio but he only has a small bag with him and
he hates to carry a radio around!!!

the help but you never know????
