Charles. It's kind of like seatbelt laws. If you fall off your bike, you're less likley to suffer a severe head injury if you're wearing a helmet. However, you're bang-on about skateboarders. The law should carry over to them. They're even more likley to split their head open. In all honesty the fine is minor $21.00 and not much of a deterrant because the police don't have time to deal with such a petty crime. Halifax has helmet fines well over a $100.00 and it's enforced. Almost everyone wears a helmet down there.

I thought skateboarders did have to wear helmets? The government should have to provide the helmets or the funds for them if you've got to wear them.

Nope, they don't.

Why should the government have to provide helmets to skateboarders? Do they have to provide helmets to cyclists? Not sure where that sentiment comes from - please enlighten.

Good point. Skateboards can cost hundereds of dollars. Surely they can afford helmets. The problem is there's no law that says they have to and even if there was, it would likley be like the bike law. It's on the books but how often is it enforced.

minors should be the only ones 'required' to wear a helmet on a bicycle IMO.

i see many adults who dont every day,i dont ride a bicycle myself ATM but if i do again someday i would not wear one because i dont need one & they look stupid.

iv driven motorcycles both dirt & street all my life & would never go without a helmet even in the states where they are all burnt anyways.

i do feel there might be times when even as an adult it would be wise to wear a helmet, like charles for example when he was riding all over hells creation & i would think that would mean riding on the side of the highway & busy roads then i would definitly wear one but i sort of mean when you are just riding around your local streets with not alot of trafic you should not be required as an adult.

but i was also raised when there was no helmets, kids today & more importantly their parents(god forbid!) should dame well make sure they raise their kids to always wear one & then i am sure more would as adults without having to force people.

Kids won't wear them if they're not taught by example. They'll say "If the adults think it's uncool, why should we?"

Spinks is right. Parent set the example.

the sad fact is tho that parents today dont seem to give a crap & let their kids do whatever they want mostly because you cant spank your kids anymore & without discipline they grow up to laugh at cops like was just seen on the news in NS,laughing at the cops & taunting them that they cant do nothing!

thats being taught by example in todays politically correct world.

Well said. At some point common sense needs to supersede political correctness.

I agree with that one. I kissed the cross around my neck 50 times a day thanking God that I have no kids!!!! I stay in a tent for six months for them, phoned in talk shows for them or write blogs for them!! But to take care of them???? NOT INTERESTED!!!!!

There are laws for our Protection and sometimes they don't always work. As far as the skateboarders are concerned they should be fined for being on the public sidewalks, the reason for this is that there is too much of a danger of those persons who are walking on the sidewalks such as senior Citizens and small children and other individuals who are in danger of being run over, I believe that the Municipality should build a real skateboard park and enforce a law for them to do their skatebvoarding at that location only. And that way they will not be in danger of harming anyone on the puglic sidewalks. Back to the Bike helmets, I think it is good to have a helmet law the trafic is to holstile and one wrong move, could cause much harm. I do think that the helmets that are being used should be made of the same material as the Motorcycle, and Snowmobile helmets they are more stirdy and durrable, and they protect the head much better then cheep plastic and stirophome.
