VLT ADDICTION TURNS MESSENGER INTO THIEF
A messenger with an addiction to video lottery terminals stole more
than $6,800.00 in change from Brinks Canada Ltd.
Mr. Ryan age 52 of Hoyt N.B. a 19 Year employee of Brinks Security, was
given a nine-month conditional sentence for theft, in Provincial Court
in Saint John N.B. on Wednesday.
The court heard that Brinks became aware of the thefts in March after
it received complaints from clients such as the Royal Bank and the Bank
of Montreal that change deliveries were consistently short.
Investigations by Brinks’ National Security Department and Securicor
Canada, another client that complained of shortages, concluded there was
a problem going on with a two-man crew that included Mr. Ryan.
The investigation included a physical audit of boxes of toonies that
were to be delivered. During a delivery of 45 boxes of toonies in March,
six boxes were discovered to be missing money. The boxes were found to
have been tampered with as one roll was placed sideways to replace the
missing rolls and eliminate any sounds of rolling change.
Further investigations by the Brinks security team showed that it was
Mr. Ryan who was tampering with the boxes. The National security team
went to the Saint John Major Crime unit with their findings and Mr. Ryan
was arrested on May 3rd just after leaving work.
Police found four rolls of $2 coins in his jacket pockets. In a
statement to Police Mr. Ryan admitted to taking the coins starting in December
2004.
Mr. Ryan’s lawyer, Mr. David Kelly, told the court that the problems
began after Mr. Ryan lost his drivers license and moved away from his
wife to Saint John for work. His client had too much time on his hands and
got hooked on VLT’s, he said.
It’s that same old demon, VLT’s,” said Mr. Kelly. “He had a 19- year
career with Brinks and now that’s out the window.”
His client was now working in the woods and earning enough to pay
$3000.00 immediately in restitution and the remainder within a year, he
said. “I’m sorry for what I’ve done,” he said, adding he was sorry for
abusing the trust of his employer.
Judge Anne Jeffries told Mr. Ryan that he likely had an addictive
personality and as a result he must abstain from alcohol and playing or
watching VLT’s.
Mr. Ryan was also ordered to pay $3000.00 restitution to Brinks on
Wednesday and to pay $400.00 a ??? until it was paid off in June 2006.

yup,ya wana play ya gota pay...
its YOUR CHOICE to play VLT's,its YOUR CHOICE to smoke/drink/do drugs, its YOUR CHOICE to steal/rob/kill,& its YOUR CHOICE not to get help...
its YOUR CHOICE.
stop trying to 'DICTATE' to people what they should & should not do with THEIR LIVES.
if people CHOOSE to play VLT's then let them IMO. the help is there if they want to quit,if they cant that is their problum & they pay the price.
millions go to casinos day in & day out & destroy themselfs, why not close every casino? = never happen.
bottom line is people need to be held accountable for THEIR ACTIONS & THEIR CHOICES in THEIR OWN LIVES.
Are you from Bernard Lord's office on a weekend hours????
I see the Courts are as versed on this addiction as the Government.
Why would a Judge tell this man to stay away from alcohol as part of his conditions as we all know if your addicted to these machines booze certainly doesn't play a part as most people who are addicted to VLT's can't even afford to drink.
Also most crimes committed due to alcohol and or drugs bring an automatic rehab visit.
But nowhere in this judge's sentencing does she impose that condition on this person, as she probably already knows there is no effective program to help with VLT addiction and with no license he couldn’t get to Ridgewood anyhow.
This is just another fine example of the devastation that can and will be caused by VLT addiction.
19 years of this man’s life are now lost to this government as well as a possible pension that was probably a couple of years away from his reach but all he is now is a common criminal to society thanks in part to the greed of his own government.
Why can't this Government see that this addiction effects everyone from people on Social Assistance to Managers and Owners of small and Major businesses and everyone in between all because of exploitation instead of controlled locations and a part of the day when they are not in operation.
Then again with Deliberate Exploitation I guess they would be banking on that very fact.
As Premier Bernard Lord says: Thank God 52% of New Brunswickers voted to keep these VLT’s for Entertainment.
And with a few more suicides this summer as was said would surely take place and did!!!
I'm sure Mr. Lord still sleeps quite peacefully at night as he still sees no need for changes to this money making program.
Yup' that's what I said: seems to be a firm believer that we all have choices
might I suggest that same proposal to him that he should consider his choice of going back to school and learn to read and write as I'm sure he is well aware there are FREE programs out there to help improve his worth to society, as he likes to share that same fact with others or try making the choice to use word perfect.
Oh,and he shouldn't take this too personally as he doesn't mind sharing his useful thoughts as well.
