Twenty years ago a teacher was pushing for my son to take ritalin but with the doctor on my son's side we made the judgement of no. Yes he did have some attention problems but he was in grade two and alot of things were very normal for his age. He is now 27 and has a government job and is doing fine. Still can have attention problems but most of us have but he is not a smoker, drinker or pill popper. He is a very responsible person who easily could of been dependent on drugs to ease pain; we made the right chose. Also I will mention that we all have to realize you can't take this drug without having major problems later in life. Unfortunately suicide can be one. Yes in extreme cases this maybe the only thing to help but that is not the case most of the time and we understand that situation. Drugging to submit children to becoming zombies is criminial. My son and daughter would home from school and talk about the kids who would just stare and listen and at a young age they knew they were on ritalin. To society it was a babysitting tool for the teachers to mould the class. A disruptions in life is the norm.

I was told last week by a gramdmother that her grandson was basically forced on Ritalin. After 2 years of pressure by teachers at Sunbury West Elementary School in Fredericton Junction, this child's mother "gave in" went to the family doctor and got the Ritalin prescription. Again, a parent being pressured by teachers to medicate their child.
What is most distrubing is that 2-3 years ago a memo was sent to every school in NB from the Department of Education strictly outling that Teachers are not to be taking on the role of Physician and suggesting medication.
What has been practiced by the staff at Sunbury West Elementary School recently is unethical and illegal.
The parents of this child are "burned-out" from the pressure of the teachers, and feel they must comply so no further judgement will happen to their son.
However, unless parents are willing to speak out....their is not much we can do except keep hearing the stories.

A note about the previous post....I am not entirely certain it was Ritalin that was prescribed, but it is definitely an ADHD medication.

7:32 Yes I made a statement about drinking he will have an occasional drink but that is not often, this statement needed to be corrected.
I hope people understand that each child comes with different wiring and understanding of what is expected but for some reason today the system expects all children to be on the same page. In life it has never been possible with the adult population. They don't want children to be children but they expect the child to count, recite the alpabet, write and read before they start school. There are some gifted children but most of us had struggles along the way. All children who are people are not disposable because they don't fit their mould. The educational system needs to change. Different learning styles need to be there for all children. Stop labelling people because we all change and need to be given a real chance in life. There are students who graduate we don't have the marks for University but if there was a system in place for them to continue their education they also could become more then what the system offers now. Example: sometimes it takes 6 months longer to learn the material but in the end they know as much as the fast learners. Usually people get one degree in four years but some others struggle and it takes 6 years but in the end the know as much but society is usually quick to give up on these people. We have alot of intellgent people who haven't been given a true chance whether it is financial or personal or some slower ways of learning. We cater to the A and B students. Common sense that most of us still can do great things with a C or D. Some of these marks come from stress or anxiety and their minds go blank as soon as you mention exam. I personally could not stop panicking during test and exams and my mind would go blank. I graduated but never felt that the system had a true reading of my intelligence. With age and experience my anxiety lessened. Anything new in life I start with the panic but I don't give up. I had to keep the panic to myself or I probably would not of been given the chance. Protraying confidence gives you a step up.

Does anybody know how many prescriptions a child gets for the year? Or does that 38,000 prescriptions mean 38000 children? If a prescription is for a month, then that would be 3000, correct?

In most cases when giving details on drug prescriptions, Each prescription represents each patient.

All I'll say is one mis-diagnosed child is one too many! For the stories? This is where the education and health committee comes in play but Bernard Lord refuse to do this!!!!

You all need to look inside a 21st century school because you have very little idea of what actually goes on. You dwell on stories of the past but do you really have any clue of what is going on right now, you senile twits?

Not much has changed, they don't have enough help for students who need it and you should give it a try too. Our system could use a lot of updates and yes some areas have slightly improved but it is not enough. Alot of our so called English schools have not had the money pouring like the small populated French schools. PS I am French, parents and grandparents are French. You can't speak out today because people like you want us to remain silent; we won't because we want things to improve. We don't expect prefection but changes have not happened quickly enough for alot of students.
