Fred FM DJ dies

By DON MACPHERSON

A popular morning DJ with a rock radio station in Fredericton has died as a result of a car accident.

Juanita MacKnight, 31, hosted programming on Fred FM from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Station manager Pat Donelan said Friday that MacKnight - who went by Juanita on the air - was crossing a street in Moncton on foot Thursday evening when she was struck by a car.

Donelan said he'd been in touch with MacKnight's father in the Moncton area, who informed him of the details of the accident.

"There was no excessive speed involved. There was no alcohol involved," he said.

In fact, MacKnight, who was from Moncton, didn't even sustain any broken bones. But a blow to the head that was inflicted when she fell ended up claiming her life at 11 a.m. Friday, Donelan said.

The tight-knit staff at Fred FM has been traumatized, he said.

"Juanita was an extremely talented young broadcaster," he said. "She had an infectious laugh that came up from her toes."

The station announced her death on the air Friday, Donelan said, and it was flooded with calls from listeners.

"She had built a very strong fan base very quickly," he said.

Most if not all of the station's employees plan to attend funeral services in Moncton, but it has not yet been scheduled, he said.

Const. Reg Robichaud of the Codiac Regional RCMP in Moncton confirmed the nature of the accident. He said it occurred at about 6:55 p.m. Thursday.

He said no charges are expected.
