It's a poor building only in your eyes. It's where I grew up and I still don't see anything wrong with the area.

8:27 I really don't see how anyone can say that those aren't poor buildings! Although I do think the North End is poorer, I do think that there are many poor houses in South. It's not a reflection of the people, it's a reflection of the economy.

It's a shithole. No other word for it. Like any community what makes it a community are the PEOPLE, and in my experience poor people are generally far nicer than upper middle class and wealthy people. So it very well could look nice through rose coloured glasses, after all, kids don't need much to be happy. We never had squat but had all kinds of friends-who weren't on ritalin. Ironically, the more 'stuff' I got, usually the less happy I was. I was far happier making up games with friends than I was playing computer games.

Yes, those rose coloured are worth their weight in gold.

yes they are old houses but unlike all the new stuff they have individual character

also they are not necessary poor houses some of them are quite elegant inside and the people around these area are very friendly unlike the ones in the so call rich area

Excuse me but it is terrible to have to live there on a cold winter day. I deliver mail and when you go in some of these places you leave feeling that there is something wrong with Billionaires getting tax breaks while the rest of us have to struggle to put food on the table and work the small paying jobs.

The seniors and average people are having to struggle and no one to turn to. We are expected to pay our share; so what about Irving.

Some of the doors need to be open and you physicly have to be there and you would have a different opinion. Yes some are nice but the majority are not in good shape. I'm not sure if some can be fixed because so much is wrong.

One place I went to had blankets around the doors and plastic on the windows but it did not help. It was so cold and I'm sure mildew must be a problem in alot of those homes; unhealthy.

It's funny. I was driving home with my wife last night down this street and i was commenting what a wonderful mosaic this hillside image created. To gain a real appreciation of this view a picture would need to be taken from at least a story higher with a bit of zoom.

I have lived most of my life in the south end and when i started my family this was the place i chose to raise my children and to buy a nice house. I remember growing up in a working poor family and being amazed at the real sense of community. My brothers and i delivered newspapers to most of the streets down here so i have been in most of these houses one time or another over the years.

As another person noted the outside of these houses can be very misleading becuase inside their are some very incredible old homes. Not to discount the fact that there are many homes in need of serious fixing. However unlike 10 years ago when there were lots of houses falling apart. There are a lot of homes and apartment building being renovated in fact there seems to be one happening on almost every street.

Just like when i was young there is now a good mix of all walks of life living back down here again unlike the mid 80's and 90's when alot of people left the southend. There are now new young doctors and many professionals that have bought homes here and are happy to be part of investing in the revitalization of this area.

There have been many successful businessmen that have come out of the southend from poor and working poor families. I would highly recommend to anyone whose interested they should read the new book the "Codfathers - lessons from the Atlantic business elite" by gordon pitts. There are lots of valueable lessons in this book that people can benefit more from then just critizing those who are successful.
