Tanker welcomed back into Tory fold Last updated Apr 13 2006 01:56 PM ADT CBC News Miramichi MLA Michael (Tanker) Malley has rejoined the Progressive Conservative caucus after six-week stint as an independent, transforming Bernard Lord's minority government back into a majority.
Malley quit the Tories and cross the floor in February after being passed over for a cabinet job, sparking a public feud between high-ranking party members and the premier's office.
Malley said he quit out of disappointment with the government's direction and his frustration with not being able to properly voice his riding's concerns.
Premier Bernard Lord said publicly that Malley had tried to blackmail him with a list of demands, including appointing a prominent lawyer to the judiciary.
Malley's departure turned Lord's government into a minority, with a fragile hold on power. The Progressive Conservatives rallied, and managed to have Malley named Speaker, ensuring the passage of their budget two weeks ago.
Malley will remain Speaker, but as a member of the Tory caucus. The house standings are now 27 Tories, 26 Liberals and one independent.
This could not of been anything but a power trip for Lord and Malley. I am hoping it all backfires in their face. Money is wasted and we the taxpayers pay their wages. NB also gets the short end of the stick and Saint John is left with a toothpick.
We can't cover the Premier's expenses and our Mayor McFarlane's botched jobs and now he needs a new assistance. Keep your eyes on this one; what a scam; the way has been paved!
Just go back through all the comments since you started the posts on Mr.Malley and you will notice one after another saying once a conservative always a conservative so this is no big surprise.
Don't kid yourselves. The Liberals did not want Tanker. Too much of a loose cannon. I'm a bit surprised the Tories took him back after his "stunt" and there's really no better word for what Tanker did then a "stunt". Keeps them in power I guess. That's the only reason I see. I'll give Lord credit for being a magician on this one. I've never seen so many savvy political moves pulled by one guy. You don't have to agree with them. Frankly, I don't agree with most of them but they are savvy (politically speaking). They'll study these tactics for years.
Unlike most of the posters here, I like Lord, but these pulling rabbits out of the hat to stay in power are getting a little old. I'd like to see some evidence of some work being done. Enough political pulling a rabbit out of the hat. Both parties should start working with what's there instead of trying to save a government or overthrow it every single day. October 2007 just isn't that far away. Go do some work gang. That's goes for both sides! I'm sick of the partsan sniping all around.
Good stuff, Spinks. What I do not understand is that Lord said Malley tried to blackmail him to get a cabinet position. Is blackmailing not illegal. How a person involved in illegal activity can be the speaker of the house in New Brunswick or elsewhere. How can Tories take a person back who was involved in blackmailing – blackmailing none other than Premier himself? There is something wrong with this picture. Charlie Leblanc you must consider to put this on your front page
jwmcq you are quite right. Shenanigans and under the table wheeling dealing is standard way of operation of this government. Lord said we he was man of integrity and would not bow to the demands of Malley. What happened to his integrity? He is made career through lying. Lying, lying and more lying and that is the main ingredient of his integrity.

Tanker had price. Bernie agreed to pay. So he is bought off. Is Branch next on the auction block?
Malley has no credibility now. Lord never had it.
Liberals had Malley almost in their pocket but they were too much standoffish. No political savvy there.
What a huge disappointment. :( Guess Tanker is a sell-out just like all of them.
