I received this poster tonight and it's a protest set for 12:30 tomorrow in front of the New Brunswick Legislature.
This is one issue that I truly don't understand!
Both the Liberals and the P.C. party agreed last year that women shouldn't be paid equally as males in the work place doing the same line of work.
I truly believe that we eliminated slavery a long time ago?
Not here in New Brunswick I guess?
Protesters often attract MLA’S. I wonder if any MLA would have the guts to show up at the rally?
Stay tune? I’ll be there with my little camera.

The law already requires same pay for men and women doing the same work. What the "pay equity coalition" is a law that says men and women who do different work must get the same pay if some commission decides the work is of similar importance to the employer. As in, telephone operators (mostly female) might have to get identical pay to telephone linemen (mostly men, the ones who climb the poles). It is not a black and white issue.
The above comment is the dumbest thing I've seen. The Pay Equity legislation currently only covers the public sector. The NBPEA and similar groups in other provinces want it to cover the private sector as well. It doesn't even remotely mean the garbage printed above.
In union jobs Women make just under 10% of what men do. Most public sector jobs are union. In the private sector, where there are far fewer unions , women earn 26% less than what men do. That's what it's about. But slavery seems a bit of a stretch don't you think?
4:02 can say what they want, but he or she is incorrect.
Equal pay for equal work has been the law in NB, in the pu blic and private sector, since 1986. That's when the Legislature added section 37.1 to the Employment Standards Act. Some people want more than equal pay for equal work; they want equal pay for different work that is valued the same. THAT'S what the CUPE protesters at the Leg want.
Here's the law of NB - hardly slavery:
37.1(1) No employer shall pay an employee of one sex at a different rate of pay from that which he pays to an employee of the other sex for work that
(a) is performed in the same establishment,
(b) is substantially the same in nature,
(c) requires substantially the same skill, effort and responsibility, and
(d) is performed under similar working conditions
except where the payment is made pursuant to
(e) a seniority system,
(f) a merit system,
(g) a system that measures earnings by quantity or quality of production, or
(h) any other system or practice that is not otherwise unlawful.
37.1(2) No employer shall reduce the rate of pay of an employee in order to comply with subsection (1).
37.1(3) No person shall attempt to influence an employer to violate subsection (1).
37.1(4) Where an employer's violation of this section results in an employee receiving a lower amount of pay than he would have received if the employer had not committed the violation, the Director may make any order that he considers appropriate and just in the circumstances, including an order that the employer compensate the employee for the loss in pay.
1986, c.32, s.4.
