Protesters jailed after trying to derail Atlantica conference
Labour groups plan rally to counter 'free trade on steroids'

(Peter Walsh/Telegraph-Journal)
Protesters confront members of the Saint John Police Force inside the Trade and Convention Centre on Friday afternoon. The protesters were in the Port City to disrupt the Atlantica Conference.

Telegraph-Journal

Three men were arrested Friday as they tried to push their way into the Saint John Trade and Convention Centre where more than 400 delegates were gathered for the three-day Reaching Atlantica Conference.

Saint John Police Force Staff Sgt. Glen McCloskey said between 35 and 50 people gained entrance to the convention centre through a fire exit door and "swarmed the police officers like a herd of cattle."

Three people were charged in the scuffle that followed with charges that ranged from causing a disturbance to assaulting a police officer.

An 18-year-old faces four charges: mischief, obstructing a police officer, causing a disturbance and assaulting a police officer. A 46-year-old was charged with obstructing a police officer and a 20-year-old faces charges of mischief, and obstruction causing a disturbance. The men were placed into custody. One was later released on his own recognizance while the others were still in custody Friday. They will appear in court at a later date.

Sgt. McCloskey said the police met with the group Citizens Against Atlantica earlier in the morning "to facilitate things, and to help them in any way we can."

The group of about 40, most of whom were from Fredericton, gathered at Kings Square around 10 a.m. and were planning to stay there until noon when police were to escort them to the convention centre. But when they heard media were looking for them at the convention centre, they made their move.

As they headed down King Street, they banged on improvised drums made of plastic buckets and plastic water bottles. They chanted slogans like "Stop the war on the poor. Make the rich pay," "Workers' rights under attack. What do we do? Stand up and fight back."

Asaf Rashid, a supporter of the group, took the stage and began speaking on a bull horn. He said people came from all over New Brunswick and from Halifax, N.S., to protest against the conference .

"This is a real concern. We have the right to discuss our future. We don't want a big business paradise."

Later in an interview, Mr. Rashid said his group is against what Atlantica represents.

One of the professed goals of Atlantica is "to encourage inter-provincial and international trade through the removal of barriers and harmonization of regulations."

A number of labour leaders were also in the city yesterday railing against this "harmonization," which they maintained would only mean adjusting wages downward.

If one area has a minimum wage of $10 and the other $7 they would want to "harmonize" $10 down to $7, said David Legere, president of CUPE, New Brunswick division, at a press conference.

Michel Boudreau, president of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour, said right-wing think tanks like AIMS (Atlantic Institute of Market Studies) are represented at the conference. The removal of barriers could weaken the working people.

"The whole idea (of Atlantica) is an insult to working people and citizens of New Brunswick," he said.

Reg Anstey, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour, called Atlantica "free trade on steroids."

Mr. Anstey said what big business calls "trade barriers or red tape are usually workers' rights, families' social protections and community-driven development."

"Atlantica is not a blueprint to make us more prosperous. It's a scheme by greedy corporations to make themselves richer at the expense of working people on P.E.I. and across Atlantic Canada," said Blair Penny, first vice-president of the Prince Edward Island Federation of Labour.

Ron Oldfield, president of the Saint John District Labour Council, said businesses running without boundaries is like a society running without laws.

Mr. Oldfield said labour will hold a rally today to express their opposition to Atlantica's agenda. It will begin at Lord Beaverbrook Rink at 1:30 p.m. and march towards the convention centre via Main Street and the viaduct.

Mr Rashid said a couple of weeks ago there would be at least 1,000 protesters at the conference. Did that happen?

Is this the Charles weenie weiner blog site ??

The real protests are today, not yesterday. However, on CBC they said it was 'a couple dozen protestors', while print media says it was around forty. Charles says fifty, but as protests were spread around there is no real count. Of course, the number of protestors doesnt' mean much, for every protestor there, there are a dozen poor New Brunswickers who are too scared to show up to such events.

Seeing as how the press mislabel 'Atlantica' as simply an effort to increase trade (an outright lie) between canada and the us, we can see why few people would think that's a problem.

People are too sarced to show; they are crazy if they show up; we all have labels and who made you god, judge or jury. Good job to all people who take the time to listen and try to inform and question what is going on. Those are the true brave people.

Thank you to all who try their best and still get crap on by the millionaires, politicians and people who love to take people down. Thank you Charles without this blog we would be limited to saying or thinking about other people. Open up and try to let all voices be heard not belittled if you dare question things or stand up and be counted for what is right fairness for all not just the elite wealthy.
