We need three papers because we have three very different cities and one paper would not match the needs. The editorial staff is different with each paper which is why we see such widely different ways of editorializing. The Times and Transcript pretty much repeats the Tory's talking points, the TJ varies depending on the issue and the Daily Gleaner tries to like everybody and never really takes a solid stand on anything. They're not the best papers, nor are they the worst. Everyone has a choice and that's to not buy them, not pick them up and not support the advertisers. If you really don't like the papers, that's the way to take a stand. Yeah, it will take a while but never eat a elephant at one sitting. Take it in small bites.
For me, they are what they are. Small town papers with a predominatly local focus although given cutbacks in recent years with fewer reporters, the local focus has been left wanting.
Are you just making fun of those good old Irving boys again? Is it really a forest thing or are you really giving your opinion on the worthlessness of Irving papers in general? Maybe we should stop printing all news papers and just rely on those honest, trustworthy, balanced and fair minded bloggers I keep hearing about.....Know any?
I think everybody agrees on the quality of the papers, and remember that the TJ just fired their editor, and from the posted article Charles had on here the new editor is pretty lacking in competency.
The simple reality is that New Brunswickers have no choice. If you want local stuff then this is it. I keep trying to get bloggers of various stripes (sports blogs, editorial blogs, news, entertainment, personal) to gather together and link from one site, because unlike the previous poster I'd read that over Irvings rags any day of the week.
Local coverage is pretty fleeting, its well known that only certain things count as news, and most of the papers are ads. Though there are no way to get figures, I know more and more people who arent renewing their subscriptions. I even talked my folks into cancelling, and they've been readers since before I was born.
But one paper makes no sense, the same number of papers would still be printed whether it was called The Gleaner or The NB News or whatever. The only way to save trees is of course to print fewer, and having less local coverage is sure to do that, but seems an odd way for them to make more money.

Just a tip, 9:37, you'd probably have an easier time getting bloggers together if you picked a nickname besides anonymous.
