I received this email Charles and hope you think it's appropriate to print in your blog today:

THE CANADIAN SOLDIER

Your alarm goes off, you hit the snooze , and sleep for another 10 minutes.

He stays up for days on end.

You take a warm shower to help you wake up.

He goes days or weeks without running water.

You complain of a "headache" and call in sick.

He gets shot at as others are hit and keeps moving Forward.

You put on your anti war/don't support the troops shirt and go meet up with your friends.

He still fights for your right to wear that shirt.

You make sure you're cell phone is in your pocket.

He clutches the cross hanging on his chain next to his dog tags.

You talk trash about your "buddies" that aren't with you.

He knows he may not see some of his buddies again.

You walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls.

He walks the streets, searching for insurgents and terrorists.

You complain about how hot it is.

He wears his heavy gear, not daring to take off his helmet to wipe his brow.

You go out to lunch and complain because the restaurant got your order wrong.

He doesn't get to eat today.

Your maid makes your bed and washes your clothes.

He wears the same things for weeks but makes sure his weapons are clean.

You go to the mall and get your hair redone.

He doesn't have time to brush his teeth today.

You're angry because your class ran 5 minutes over.

He's told he will be held over an extra 2 months.

You call your girlfriend and set a date for tonight.

He waits for the mail to see if there is a letter from Home.

You hug and kiss your girlfriend, like you do everyday.

He holds his letter close and smells his love's perfume.

You roll your eyes as a baby cries.

He gets a letter with pictures of his new child and wonders if they'll ever meet.

You criticize your government and say that war never solves anything.

He sees the innocent tortured and killed by their own people and remembers why he is fighting.

You hear the jokes about the war and make fun of men like him.

He hears the gunfire, bombs , and screams of the wounded.

You see only what the media wants you to see.

He sees the broken bodies lying around him.

You are asked to go to the store by your parents. You don't.

He does exactly what he is told.

You stay at home and watch TV.

He takes whatever time he is given to call, write home, sleep, and eat.

You crawl into your soft bed with down pillows and get comfortable.

He crawls under a tank for shade and a 5 minute nap, only to be woken by gunfire.

You sit there and judge him, saying the world is probably a worse place because of men like him.

If only there were more men like him!

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you :

Jesus Christ and the Canadian Soldier.

One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Amen

I find it ironic that someone who has the same theories about the Irvings as the Nazi's has about the Jews (media and financial control) does not at least apologize for his antics at this opportunity.

9:40 AM according to some estimates our costs for Afghanistan war is $8-10 billion with b. What for? To kill innocent children and women and please Bush. Sad day in Canada. Veterans do not appreciate this excursion of Bush and his toady Harper.

9:40AM, if you re-read it you would see that it says to support the soldiers.....it does not mean that you have to support the war. Any vet will tell you that support is one of the most important things they can receive. Doesn't matter wether you believe in the war or not.....as long as you believe in the soldier.
I would love to know 9:40AM how many of those statements apply to you? Do you like to hit your snooze button? How do you feel after that hot shower?
I do not support the war. I do not support the reasons behind the war.
I DO however support our troops!
This really made me think and made the soldiers seem more real. They do live that everyday. Our vets lived it everyday so that I could have freedom to make my choice of wehter or not to support the war.
Maybe someday the people of Afghanistan will be able to make choices on their own because of our soldiers.
I will state again, I do not support the war but I do support our soldiers and vets and I don't just honor and remember them on Novemebr 11.........I think about them everyday!

Where is the red poppy and black centre. The Leaf and Flagg does not have the same meaning.

No one ever said this before but I believe it to be true. You are suppose to take your poppy and throw it down at a ceremony and not wear a poppy after twelve. If this fact or a story?

"Remembrance Day" is not about 'soldiers', it is about veterans. That's why I say to keep Afghanistan out of it-it has nothing to do with it.

In Haiti our soldiers helped overthrow a democratically elected government and we witnessed first hand in Somalia what many canadian soldiers are capable of. Blind respect for an occupation is not patriotism.

I don't 'support' soldiers of an occupying force any more than if I had been german I would have supported the move into Poland or France. Anybody that thinks Afghanistan or Haiti is a threat to canadian freedom should prove it.

It is unfortunate for soldiers, it is extremely difficult to disobey orders, but it can be done. As citizens all we can do is try to convince our representatives to bring them home. That poem ridicules those who live here and fight to try to bring soldiers home. Living here and sleeping in at least accomplishes that first moral commandment-do no harm.

The soldiers do not have the right to disagree with orders, in fact can't even voice them, so its up to us. That means not glamourizing immoral acts, and it means fighting those who make these immoral decisions in the first place-the gutless cowards in suits in Parliament who will never see battle.

As for the soldiers themselves, start demanding that leaders respect them enough to make sure they believe this may be worth their life and hold a referendum. Let soldiers vote on whether they think this is the 'right thing' to do. I suspect you won't get nearly the jingoistic reply some may think. Notice that Harper has told all his tories to keep their mouths shut, that's because when it was a liberal government they were all chanting to hold a national referendum on foreign missions, now they are in power its a different story.

Thanks Charles, for posting more threads on the remembrance day theme, this one has gotten off track. But remembrance day is not about 'the canadian soldier' it is about the canadian veteran and that was a terrible poem. I even know several veterans groups who are asking that 'Flanders Fields' get rid of the line "Take up our quarrel with the foe", but stick with Flanders Fields over that.

rest in PEACE.
