Horsfield St. 'mayor' wins McGloan award posthumously

By Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon

The so-called Mayor of Horsfield Street has another credit to his name.

Dominick Eden was posthumously given the Thomas L. McGloan Award by Uptown Saint John Inc. Wednesday during the fifth annual Uptown Awards for Excellence.

President Dick Daigle cited Mr. Eden's "relentless efforts to improve the quality of life for residents of the uptown peninsula."

He started by revitalizing Horsfield Street, then went on to fight for any neighbourhood causes, he said.

Debbie Eden, his wife of 22 years, accepted the award on his behalf.

"A handful of individuals . . . continually end up in the forefront and work hard for their community and Dominick was certainly one of those people," she told reporters afterward.

"He had a profound love for this crazy little city and would have loved this honour."

Mr. Eden, 42, died last February of lymphoma, a form of cancer.

He became the inaugural winner of the Thomas L. McGloan award, created in memory of the first president of Uptown Saint John Inc. for his pioneering spirit and devotion to his community.

Mr. McGloan, who died in May 2005, played a major role in the development of several community projects, including the construction of the Harbour Bridge, Market Square and the renovation of the Imperial Theatre.

Other awards included:

Enhancement of a public space: the city and Saint John Energy for the reconstruction of Water Street.

Festival or event: the Winter Lights committee for its "significant efforts in pulling off Canada's largest Christmas party."

Maintenance of property: Prince William Developments Limited for its "attention to detail and high level of care taken to maintain 115 Prince William St., better known as the Old Post Office.

"This building now shines like a crown jewel at night" with newly installed flood lights, said Mr. Daigle.

Renovation or new construction: Commercial Properties Limited for its "exemplary work" on CenterBeam Place, the block of heritage buildings bounded by Granan Lane, King, Canterbury, and Prince William streets.

"This project clearly illustrates the potential of so many buildings in the uptown."

I think the name" Eden Lane" would fit this story just fine.

It would be nice to see that his hard work and determination be recognized by the City of Saint John.

I agree, Eden should be the name of the street. Personally I don't really care for the name HORSEFIELD.
This guy did wonderful things. If they can rename the street down where I live John MacMillan drive...in honor of a guy who's dad owns the store little johns, the same should be considered for Mr. Eden

I AM surprised that Charles is glorifying Mr. Eden, as Charles is known to be an activist for poverty.
Mr. Eden was known to many of us as a man who was prejudiced against the poor, and tried to keep welfare people out of his buildings by making the rent so high that they couldn't afford to live there.
Sorry, but there is another side to this story.

I wasn't certain if I should post the last comment but then again it's a blog.

I don't agree saying bad things about a person once they left us.

I believe that Dominick did a wonderful job cleaning up his street so therefore naming the street after this guy would be a good move.

OH OK Charles, I can't wait until one of the Irving boys dies, you'll be on here saying all good things about them then.
Yeah , right.

I do not want to speak ill of the dead but what is the difference between Dominick Eden and the Irvings Charles? Yes he cleaned up his street and did a fantastic job but raised rents so the poor couldn't live in his apartments. When Irving cleans up an area, what do you say about them Charles?

Eden was the mayor of Horsefield, not of Eden Lane. Keep the name the same.

The Grannan Lane name change irked me. The Grannan group restaurant on the street is even called Church Street.
