He said - The only reason the U.S. invaded Iraq was for Israel interest. It had nothing to do with Oil or anything else.

So? Is David Duke a nut or right on the mark with his statement?

Hmm ... let's see. David Duke - the former leader of the Klu Klux Klan ... the anti-Holocaust guy who is in Iran this week at the Iranian president's anti-Holocaust conference ...

I vote for "nutbar".

One has to understand that David Duke is a flaming White Supremacist, and Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan who themselves hate Jews and other non-white persons including the poor and disabled and other minority groups the face that he attended an anti jewish summitas a guest of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad means that he can be and probably is very dangerous individual. this Mr. duke needs to be placed on a list of people of interest and watched very closely to make sure that activities are not threatening to other individuals in society.

Hey, Charles is crazy but that doesn't mean he's wrong:) However, it's more than that, although there is SOME truth in what he says. There is no doubt this benefits Israel, and there is some evidence that the Israeli lobby has more power in this administration than last, however, whether they are 'wagging the dog' is a contentious issue.

It's part of a larger question though, which is why be in the middle east at all. I mean, the US has interests in Canada but if they started building bases here then we'd be concerned. If Canada were building bases in Indonesia canadians would think 'well, its not our business to be there'.

However, Iraq was essentially crushed, even Kuwait said they had no fear of Saddam Hussain and the people were barely getting by thanks to US sanctions (which oddly enough controlled everything but the distribution of wealth).

But Israel certainly benefits, and its worth mentioning, here are the reasons I've heard:

1. Iraq provides a good media buffer for the growing atrocities Israel is committing in Palestine. With humanitarian issues switching to Iraq Israel was able to accomplish a lot while attention was directed elsewhere.

2. One of the big reasons is water. Israel has water shortages and problems, and Iraq has the most sustainable water supply in the region which is easily diverted, and coincidentally this is something being done.

3. Security is a big concern for Israel obviously. A cantonized Iraq serves it as well as a cantonized palestine does. The best way to keep muslims at bay is to keep them fighting against one another.

4. Israel has provided much of the industry and contracts to rebuilding Iraq. This has helped buoy their economy, which in the past was always propped up by the US, it still is, but they are working for the money now.

Those are worth mentioning, but the 'blame Israel' certainly misses a main point that it serves american interests well. It pretty much got Bush reelected, virtually all he could campaign on was the war. In the US domestic politics takes precedence over everything else. Not to mention the massive expansion of US agribusiness and contracting work that has benefitted the US.

The US State Department had previously passed a new doctrine of pre-emptive strike. Iraq was said to be a 'first test case' of this doctrine. There is no point in telling the world that you are going to forcefully maintain your status quo if you don't follow it up and PROVE it. That worked as well, not only do people all over the world hate the US but they also fear them, which is more important.

So what the mix is, is hard to tell, I remember all the trouble a canadian website got into just for mentioning "hey, ever notice that the top 20 people in the Bush Administration are jews?"

Israel is a big part of american foreign policy and is there 'local police' in the region, but to maintain that its 'just israel' is to miss the point that nothing is "just" Israel.

Nutbar means he's certifiable and has an excuse. I'm with MM. Duke knows exactly what he's doing.

Wow Charles, get a brain. Don't you dare endorse a guy like David Duke, a hateful anti-semite.

This is another great example of why you're no journalist.

There are those in Society who are severely demented, that means possessed with some kind of spirit that anyone in their so-called right mind doesn't want anything to do with, The person who left an earlier commnt is exactly ritht on the Money when he, or, she stated that "Mr. Duke" knows exactly what he is doing so he is absolutely without excuse. because he is deliberately opperating on hate mode.

I'm anon 1 pm and had voted Duke is a "nutbar". Charles' original question was if Duke was "nut or right on the mark"

I don't think David Duke is right on the mark. He's a white supremacist and a racist. Being a racist, he'd be against anybody in the Jewish faith (or any other faith/colour/culture for that matter). Of course he is going to twist the facts to make it look like Israel is benefitting from the situation in Iraq.

Anon 2:32 has some good points. But that doesn't mean that Duke *isn't* a nutbar.

Nutbar: A person who is regarded as eccentric or mad (according to http://www.wordwebonline.com/en/NUTBAR) - you don't have to be "certifiable" to be a nutbar.
