I was driving someone this afternoon and I told him to drop over the Fredericton Winterfest winter event so I could take a few pictures for my blog.

There were thousands of people in the area.

Once at the gate, I told the officials that I was a blogger and it'll only take me 10 minutes to take a few pictures of the ice structures?

They insisted that I pay three bucks.

I once again told them it was just for a few minutes but no dice!! They insisted that I pay.

I believe it was very nice of me to offer promoting the event but they weren’t interested. I’m certain the organizers of the event are fine people

Do the Irving’s employees pay three dollars so he or she can take a picture for the Irving paper?

Good question?

I might add these photographers are tops in my books!!!! They're very good people.

Yes, I understand everyone can say - I'm a blogger also.

But I believe I do have a point.

Do Irving’s employees pay to go into an event to take pictures?

Just for the record? I didn’t pay the three bucks so therefore I left without the pictures.

I was also told it was the first time Fredericton Winterfest ever charge to enter the ground.

It's up to the organizers if, and how many, press passes they want to give. It more marketing than anything. They have to decide which is of better value, the coverage or the $3 bucks.

If Billy Bob says, "Let me in for free and I'll tell all the guys at the local pub about it through word of mouth," there are some people that will say yes. Where to draw the line is up to them.

Even the mainstream press doesn't have carte blanche to enter everywhere. Heck, even police need official warrants if people want to be sticklers.

Private organizations can decide who is and is not media. This happens all the time, everywhere.

The way to secure your place as a media person is to do quality, balanced, and fair reporting. Do it in a way that is interesting, entertaining and provides something the other media outlets will not. If you're popular enough--organizations like this will start inviting you to come take pictures and report for free.

I think that's the first time I've seen a winter festival that charged just to get into the gate. That's too bad, and I wonder what they really need all the money for. Other cities have winter festivals all the time, the city gives them land, and volunteers run them.

But it's their loss, this is the one place where pictures could have been sent all over the world and attracted attention to Fredericton. A one page feature in the local media won't have that effect, so $3 is a small price to pay for worldwide coverage. It's too bad they are so small minded, a blogger like charles can increase tourism in a way no other media can. It's also too bad because the people who created the ice sculptures would have a public venue where their works and identities would be seen all over the world. Now, they will melt with the sun and get hidden away on microphiche where they will be forgotten.

Now people around the world are askin', "What do they need with the three bucks?"

Wow its hard to believe they missed that world wide coverage. Why next year there would have been people here from as far away as...Burtts Corner!. Give your head a shake anonymous and come back to the real world.

I can't believe it either. And this site gets like what, 80 hits a day??
Gee did they every miss the boat on this one.
They'll think twice next year before they'll deny Charles entry free of charge.

We don't really have any news except Irving news. Happy to see Bloggers attempting to bring in another side of things. We are so brain washed and most of us don't realize it.

Must be some newcomers here, because Charles got media coverage from the New York Times and has been on CBC national shows several times and gets hits from all over the world. I don't think he gets any from Burtt's corner, they have to pay a lot for high speed and with Charles love of high def pictures its doubtful they will wait that long for the site to download.

Having a world wide audience means he's a one man tourist bureau, for both the good and the bad, and policy makers should keep that in mind. If somebody is going on vacation they're going to type in 'New Brunswick' and guess who's site pops up? Anybody thinking about coming to the capital will once again find thousands of links to Charles site.

The search feature lets people find specific information, and as mentioned, typing in 'winterfest' would come up with dozens, maybe even hundreds of photos. Yet at best a search at Canadaeast.com will give maybe one or two pictures,if that, and of course once television coverage and radio coverage is over its done for good.

CBC is the exception, but most of their stuff online doesn't have pictures at all, so once again that doesn't help the people who put all the time into sculpting. If those people were smart they would at least take pictures themselves and send them to Charles to post, and I think the organizers should think very hard next year whether its worth $3 to have not only worldwide attention (granted its not as huge as a television show or other media exposure but still pretty good for $3) but a permanent record of the festival that can be brought up with two seconds of typing.

So that's the reality, whether people like it or not. Also of course is the point that charging admission completely bars the poor from attending at all, which is why many festivals get some municipal, even provincial dollars, because they are good for everybody and should be available to everybody.

Oh now you should get into places for free because you are a blogger.

Give you head a shake. Pay like the rest of us you moocher.

Be civil. Didn't your mother tell you if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything?

Anonymous said...

Why $3.00? To pay for things like the $50,000 snowmaking equipment the city bought and other expenses. While there are lots of volunteers, the organizer of the event is a paid employee. Money doesn't grow on trees.

What's next... are you going to throw a temper tantrum at the ECMA's next February when you're not allowed access to secured areas and demand free access to the event?

Blogger Charles LeBlanc said...

Temper tantrum???? Nooooo.....I never lost my temper...I just leave and blog it????

ECMA's????

That would be booorriinnggggg!!!!

They had a chance to promote their event and they blew it!!!

It's not my lost!!!!

It's theirs!!!!

Anonymous said...

No, actually it is your loss. You're the one complaining that they wouldn't let you in for free. They couldn't care less that you didn't pay. If you had gone in, you would have taken hundreds of photographs of people without asking anyone's permission. It would have been a repeat of what happened in Oromocto. Can't you just let people enjoy themselves at a child-oriented event and go entertain yourself elsewhere?

Anonymous said...

ECMA's boring? What are you smoking? This is a very exiting thing for our city. For a blogger or reporter or whatever you call yourself someone would think you would be happy to report on this event.

Plus I am glad that you were not allowed inside the Winterfest because like 7:15pm said you would have just taken more inapropriate pictures and turned it into a Charles story, just like Oromocto and that woman who wanted her picture taken off your blog and you just laught at her.

Blogger Charles LeBlanc said...

When they came last year? You never saw one picture in this blog.

The winterfest is a piece of art!!!

I believe the issue of this blog was if the Irving's employees pays to get in there to take pictures.

But I will leave it to you idiots to change the story.

Anonymous said...

Nobody is changing the story. YOU are the one whining about not getting in for free. Just because you have your own website, it doesn't, and shouldn't, grant you unlimited access to every event.

Anonymous said...

the Ecmas are coming to fredericton, I live here, right on

I'm sorry Charles but I recall you writing a while back about name calling and such yet you call the very people on your blog "idiots". That is enough for me not to come back to your blog. When someone has an opinion different than yours they are "idiots". That is not a very open minded approach. You are very defensive a lot of the time over the little things. Yes, you were asked to pay, as was the other 100's of people attending - including my child. I could bring a camera everywhere, set up a site and ask for everything for free, but that's not how it works. I don't know what they need the money for - maybe to pay for the security they had on site, the road made to the event, the busses transporting everyone for FREE. maybe all that was what the $3 covered. When you consider the cost of everything these days, that's a cheap bit-o-fun.
