Am I upset????? Noooooooo...I’M FURIOUS!!!!

I was approached by an individual who’s on Welfare.

mysterious

The person told me they would have attended the protest on January 24th but there was a little problem.

The welfare recipient was told face to face by New Brunswick Family Services that if they attended the protest?

They would lose their welfare check!!!!

This was told to me in front of two strong individuals who are not on Welfare.

This is a very serious matter!!!!!

We cannot go to the media with this issue because the individual would be cut off assistant the moment the story goes public.

mysterious

We sure cannot go to the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission because they are on record that the poor of this Province should be ignore at any cost.

So? We have a huge problem here.

A poor person on welfare who was told not to attend the protest in a so-call democratic system?

As in past practice I would go to the head macho at New Brunswick Family Services and tell them of my concerns?

I can’t do this because they would immediately cut off her check.

We’re going to meet with the individual Monday and find out what would be the next step?

I would go at the New Brunswick Legislature to meet with Carmelle Robichaud but that’s totally out of the question!!!!

Since bigot Tom Mann wrote a letter to the Irving’s papers < almost all the papers > congratulating Tanker Malley for banning the poor from the Legislature.

The New Brunswick Human Rights Commission is a Unionize body and there could be a connection here?

The poor welfare recipient has to meet with the Minister of Family Service so Carmelle can tell her face to face the individual that they have nothing to fear.

Sigh.......Always something going on in the Capital. Never a dull moment and you people believe that I’m making up these stories?

Question?

What's going on in the rest of the Province that we don't hear about???

Stay tuned......AND I DO MEAN STAY TUNED!!!!!

Chuck, this is total silliness. The media are the watchdog of government, and suggesting you can't go to media because the welfare check will get cut off is complete bull. You don't think the media would follow up on a story like that? You don't think the opposition wouldn't LOVE to have something like that to throw in the faces of government?

There are checks and balances in place. I happen to doubt this story ever happened, but if it did you can certainly go to media and/or to opposition government members with this story. You posted it here... if this is true, those who know the situation will know and know its public.

This is a true story. I wouldn't blog something like this if it wasn't true?

The media could cover it but the individual will be cut off for going public?

This is a fact!!!

I have to set up a meeting with Carmel and her. So she can tell her that there's nothing to worry about!!!

These are facts Jack!!!!

Untrue.

This is disgusting Charles! The government must not be allowed to control people like that! I'd hate to find out how many people really wanted to go to that protest and didn't because of threats like that!

This is absolutely unacceptable. There are some idiotic, inhuman and heartless officials in the Department of Family and Community Services at Directors and Assistant Deputy Minister level who are carrying on this dictatorship and not the political side. Liberals will be better off firing these evil people if they wish to survive as a government. These are the very individuals who sank the ship of Bernard Lord and they may do the same with Shawn Graham. These individuals must not be there. They are not public servants. They are public enemy #1.

We'll find out. We know the media and members of the government read this blog. However, Charles could do a specific letter to the media as well as some MLA's.

However, once again, Charles does not represent the poor just because he is poor (and only in finances:) any more than he represents all acadians just because he's acadian. Banning him, or endorsing the banning of him does not mean 'the poor'. The woman in question can easily walk into any government building without fear.

But here's how it works. To ensure that the story is real, media would have to contact Charles. Charles would have to set up a meeting with the media and the person in question to at least verify it.

The media can then protect their sources, they do that on numerous occasions. The problem arises in that if the person doesn't trust the media, they won't do it.

As it is, people are free to disbelieve it, I think those people are ones who have little knowledge of the poor because anybody who has dealt with government either on EI, welfare, or disability won't be very surprised by this. In fact, I think you can go back and some people mentioned it as being very likely to happen.

However, once again I'll parrot my familiar line, and that's that a protest doesn't accomplish a whole lot. I don't think any media covered Charles protest, even the CBC (I could be wrong). What you need is a lobby and a concrete proposal. Then start lobbying for it just like the residential tenants act.

It takes work, but that is how legislation gets changed and people's lives are made better. But for all the complaints and protests I still couldn't follow what exactly was being proposed.

1. Increased welfare rates?
2. A fund for welfare recipient's security deposit?

Or both? Then there was something about the Human Rights Commission that they didn't mention poverty in their report, but what does that mean? What specifically should the Human Rights Commission be doing differently? Answer that question and maybe a lobby can begin, but just protesting against a body won't solve anything. At a fundamental level both people and politicians want to know "what is it you want?" State that clearly and concisely so readers understand.

While I have no doubt that it is true someone "told" Charles they were threatened that of course doesn't mean the story itself is true. The self righteous ranting aside, its because Charles offers more excuses to why nothing can be done than solutions that is the most telling. He manages to turn a dubious story into a tirade that just about includes everything his blog is famous for. Lets see, there's the government of course, the media, the human rights commission, The Irving's, Tom Man, Tanker, and even his banning at the legislature. While proclaiming to be "FURIOUS" even Charles knows that at this point in time it's just so much unsubstantiated talk that no respectable "journalist" would ever print. But he also realizes that in the world of blogging facts mean little, accountability is nonexistent and above all he is not in fact a journalist. However he does knows the value of a good rant to his hard-line followers. So when you can manage to squeeze everyone you normally harangue in your blog all in one rant its just too good to pass up. You can always say "stay tuned" at the end after all. Isn't that all the facts you need?

Come on People you remember when the Liberals wee in under McKenna we had Anne Breault, now there was a real peice of work. she was just as ignorant to the concerns of the poor and marginalized and low income residents of this Province as this one is. However, I would like to have more information before I make any statement either negative or, positive.

I believe it is true that someone told Charlie this story, but I don't believe it's true that anyone in authority told any welfare recipient they'd lose their eligibility if they went to a protest.

Even if I was prepared to accept someone might do that, I have to ask, as someone else did here: if social assistance clients were losing their benefits because of political protests, Charlie would have lost his a long time ago! Ditto Vaughan Barnett!
