You saw this guy uptown. I decided to have a chat with the guy last weekend.

Guess what?

I've learned that he's a very smart guy! You wish to hear stories from the Street level?

I fell sorry for Russell, but I find that this interview is degrading to him. Obviously he has problems but there was no need to post them on the internet and asking him to do this interview.

I asked and he agreed!!!

Degrading???? Please let me know which part you found degrading?

But of course? It's people like you who would wish that these people would just go in a corner and die without nobody hearing their stories.

I believe that Russell did a fantastic job!!!

i agree with charles 100% percent on this one

Oh on the contrary I don't wish any harm to the poor at all, I want more to be done to help these people.

What I find degrading is that he sounded drunk and he sounded like he was having a hard time doing the interview. But I know you asked him and he did accept. Just by the sound of his voice he sounded like he had a hard life and still has lots of problems.

I don't know how to explain it. It just sounded a little degrading. But that is just my opinion.

The word got out that I was going to interview him.

A few chatted with Russell before we began and he was sober.

If Russell would have been drunk?

The interview would have gone nowhere.

The voice you hear is the voice of a very hard life and I gain a lot of respect towards Russell after the interview.

Take the time and listen to his words....

It's very sad!!!

Oh I totally agree with you Charles, he does sound like he has had and still has a very hard life. A life that nobody deserves.

I don't know it just sounded bad in my point of view. Thanks for the clarification that he was sober, it sounded like he was drunk.

Keep up the good work Charles.

I do think Charles was a little hard on that person above, comments like "its people like you.." shouldn't be brought up.

I do think the interview needs to be listened to several times. His hard life means he speaks very slowly, something people aren't used to. I do notice many 'natives' speak very slowly and thoughtfully. I also noticed a couple of inside jokes that apparantly slipped over Charles head!

I think the central problem with the interview is that it is a reminder that many people have problems that "get a job" won't fix.

But it is a very good interview, and once you get used to Russell it is good to hear his voice. I do agree with the point above, 'degrading' isn't the word, but there is something disquieting because the way he talks is so unfamiliar. We are used to mainstream media where everything is edited to get a quick point out and move on. I would have said 'punch drunk' more than drunk, like charles says, he's had a tough life.

Hopefully some people will hear this in Fredericton and realize the need for the 'wet bar' that the Emergency shelter talks about. With a small amount of alcohol Russell could function normally and perhaps in time get off it entirely.

A great team there though, its nice to hear a guy who can slow down Charles conversation!

I called Ridgewood on Friday for some much needed help with a gambling addiction. I was told they have beds up there for that as well. I had to leave a message on the in-take worker's machine. The message line said she would be there until 4:30pm on Friday. I called around 2 pm. No one got back to me. I waited and waited.
Finally today, Tuesday, I called again and left another message. Then I called another line and got a live person. The live person told me if I need someone right away like that to call Mental Health. I called Mental Health, the receptionist said we have no gambling support people here, but I will give your name and number to our in-take worker and the worker will call you back.
I waited several hours then I went out for a walk. When I got back there was a message on my machine from a worker, she left no number. By that time the Mental Health was closed.
My point being, it's no wonder people are committing suicide with this gambling affliction. If there is help out there, where is it? It's darn long getting to you!!
It will soon be a week since my initial call and I have received no support counselling as yet. Awful!

That's how governments save money. Offer bad service and hopefully people will go away. This has been mentioned many times before, but until a political party or somebody makes it a political issue, it will remain on the backburner. I still remember the woman who robbed a bank in Nova Scotia to finally get support for her addiction.

To the anonymous posted who thought that it was degrading for charles to interview Russell; it might be time to take a cold hard look at your own position(s) of privilege. You are liberalism at its finest.

When you assume that Russell is drunk, assume that it is degrading him, etc . .you merely expose yourself as a typical liberal. You pretend to care so much, but you ignore the racism that exists within your own mind. Take a look in the mirror.

That's hardly liberalism. Russell speaks very slowly, and Charles speaks very fast, so at first glance one can easily make the impression that Russell was drunk and Charles was perhaps taking advantage of that-since people tend to drop their inhibitions.

That's all been sorted out. Russell simply expresses himself differently than most people are used to. It has nothing to with whatever 'liberalism' happens to mean to anybody, its simply a case of mistaken impressions.

If it was a man in a tux speaking slowly would you presume that he was an alcoholic?

Don't trick yourself.
