Last summer, I received an email asking me if I would be interested in meeting the real Miss New Brunswick 2007?

A meeting was set for Tim Horton’s on Regent Street.

Sure enough the family showed up in time.

A conversation took place and the issue change to my six months protest in front of the New Brunswick Legislature.

The mother whispered - Our little boy in the back have ADHD!

There in the back seat was a cute little fella listening to my every word.

His name is Tyler!!!

He’s on medication which he admitted he didn’t enjoy but what choice does he have?

I began chatting with the little boy and he was very surprised how I knew his way of thinking?

He’s a smart little guy.

Tyler told me the problem he’s having in the classroom is the noise.

How many time have I heard this one?

But unfortunately, the Liberals while in opposition promise to do a study on the matter our kids are being drugged.

They used the issue to be elected and that’s sad!!!

Can you imagine taking advantage of an issue such as kids being drugged?

HEY???? Maybe Miss New Brunswick 2007can be the spokesperson against the drugging and the killings of our children in this Province???

HI CHARLES, I AM NOT SURE HOW I FEEL ABOUT YOU SHARING OUR STORY ON THE INTERNET, BUT SINCE YOU HAVE I WILL HAVE TO LEAVE MY COMMENTS ON THIS MATTER.
I UNDERSTAND YOUR PLIGHT AGAINST ADHD DRUGS,HOWEVER I DON'T AGREE THAT YOU CAN GROUP EVERYONE INTO THE SAME CATEGORY. TYLER'S FATHER AND I SPENT QUITE A FEW YEARS SAYING "NO" WE WOULD NOT GIVE OUR SON DRUGS FOR HIS ADD. WE WERE CONVINCED THAT THERE WAS A BETTER WAY....STRUCTURE AND LOVING DICIPLINE. WE TRIED TO TEACH OUR SON HOW TO MAKE APPROPRIATE CHOICES IN SCHOOL, WITH HIS FRIENDS AND AT HOME. THE OLDER HE GOT THE HARDER IT WAS FOR HIM TO CONCENTRATE AT SCHOOL. I WON'T GET INTO ALL THE IN'S AND OUT'S OF ADD, BUT I SPENT LOTS OF TIME READING AND RESEARCHING WAYS TO HELP MY SON. AS HIS MARKS DETERIORATED, AND IMPULSIVE BEHAVIOR KEPT HIM FROM ENJOYING FRIENDSHIPS, WE TALKED TO OUR PEDIATRICIAN, WHO ASKED US IF TYLER WAS A DIABETIC, WOULD WE NOT GIVE HIM THE MEDICATION HE NEEDED TO BE A HEALTHY AND HAPPY CHILD? OF COURSE WE WOULD SOOOO....
WE GAVE IT A TRY....AND WERE AMAZED AT THE POSITIVE CHANGES. FOR THE FIRST TIME, I HAVE HEARD HIM SINGING, HE NOW LOVES TO DRAW(HE IS VERY ARTISTIC) AND BUILD WITH KINEX. HIS MARKS HAVE IMPROVED AND SO HAVE HIS FRIENDSHIPS. HE STILL GETS IN A LITTLE TROUBLE AT SCHOOL...BUT AFTER ALL, HE IS ALL BOY!
NO I DO NOT LIKE THE FACT THAT MY SON IS ON MEDICATION, BUT I DON'T LIKE THE FACT THAT I HAVE TO TAKE MEDICATION FOR MY ARTHRITIS EITHER. SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO TAKE THESE DRUGS TO GIVE US A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE AND I FEEL THAT TYLER'S QUALITY OF LIFE HAS IMPROVED SINCE HE STARTED TAKING HIS MEDICATION. AS HE BECOMES A TEEN AND YOUNG ADULT, HE WILL HAVE HIS SOCIAL SKILLS WELL DEVELOPED AND MAY NO LONGER HAVE TO TAKE ANY MEDS. I ALSO HAVE A FRIEND WHO'S HUSBAND IS A SCHOOL TEACHER AND HAS BEEN ADHD ALL HIS LIFE AND JUST STARTED MEDICATION THIS YEAR. HE IS AMAZED AT HOW MUCH HAPPIER HE IS AND FUNCTIONS SO MUCH BETTER AT WORK WITH TIME MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION.
SOOOOO CHARLES I DO AGREE WITH YOU THAT SOME CHILDREN ARE BEING PRESCRIBED MEDS WHEN THEY DON'T NEED IT, BUT FOR THOSE THAT DO, IT CAN DEFINATELY HELP THEM. SO FAR GIVEN THE PROPER DOSAGE DOES NOT SEEM TO HAVE ANY LONG TERM HEALTH EFFECTS AND IF THE CHILD DOESN'T NEED THE MEDICATION, IT WON'T WORK FOR THEM ANYWAY.
YOU ARE RIGHT THAT THE SCHOOL SYSTEM DOES SEEM TO PUSH FOR THE DIAGNOSIS AND MEDICATON, BUT ONCE THE CHILD HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED THEY ARE MORE TOLERENT(OR UNDERSTANDING) THAT THE BEHAVIOR IS BECAUSE OF A CONDITION, NOT JUST BECAUSE THE CHILD IS "BAD" OR DEFIANT. I WOULD RATHER HAVE A TEACHER SAY THAT MY CHILD ACTED THE WAY HE DID BECAUSE HE HAD ADD, NOT BECAUSE HE IS JUST A BAD KID WITH NO DICIPLINE AT HOME.
SO MY DAUGHTER MISS NEW BRUNSWICK WOULD NOT SPEAK OUT AGAINST ADD MEDICATION, BUT WOULD TALK ABOUT THE POSITIVE EFFECTS OF A PROPER DIAGNOSIS AND APPROPRIATE MEDICATION.
THANKS KIM
