I don't think anyone is laughing at anyone. It was a dead industry in Saint John and it's time to move on... actually, it was time to move on years ago...

There's a good reason that it's a 'dead industry'. The government of Canada decided that it wouldn't subsidize it anymore, any ships it needs for navy or coast guard it could get Paul Martin's people in third world countries to build them for us.

Just for some perspective, the largest employer in Maine is a builder of navy frigates, which means the largest employer in the state and all the related industries is subsidized by the federal government. Ever notice that it's always 'time to move on' when the province takes it in the rear yet again. When ontario industries get subsidized its called 'investment', when anybody else gets it, its called 'subsidy', or 'handouts'.

Yeah, ok - I wrote the initial message about it being time to move on. I respect your comments but stand by mine... I don't think it was in the interests of the Canadian taxpayer to continue to foot the bill for a shipbuilding industry that required subsidy to exist.

Also, I would say this is largely a Saint John, as Irving's other shipyards seem to be quite busy. Is there an issue closer to home we should examine before immediately blaming the federal government for "screwing" Saint John again?
