Rebate details out today
Premier responds to heating oil increase

By Derwin Gowan
Telegraph-Journal

Premier Bernard Lord will announce details of the provincial home heating oil benefit this afternoon.

The premier announced on Sept. 9 that the government would pay a one-time home-heating oil cash rebate to families with gross annual income of less than $45,000 who do not receive social assistance.

The premier announced the one-time rebate in response to sharp increases in oil prices resulting from hurricanes and other factors over which the government of New Brunswick has no control.

Premier Lord said in September the rebate would help about 37,000 families, costing taxpayers $6 million.

The premier will come to Saint John this afternoon to help Elizabeth Weir, president of the new Energy Efficiency and Conservation Agency of New Brunswick, officially open the organization's new offices on Charlotte Street at 2 p.m.

Mr. Lord announced the outlines of the rebate program following a government caucus meeting on Sept. 9, but a government source says he will announce today details such as where and how to apply - and who, exactly, qualifies.

The source said that people who qualify should get their cheques two to four weeks after they apply.

"The increasing cost of oil is a global problem and the government cannot do anything about the cost of oil," the source said.

Mr. Lord announced this rebate as a one-shot deal for the hardest hit families but, the source said the long-term solution lies in burning less oil.

The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Agency will address that issue.

The government announced last year that it would set up such an agency - a promise on which Mr. Lord made good on Oct. 13 when he appointed Ms. Weir to head the new agency.

Ms. Weir had to give up her job as Saint John Harbour MLA and leader of the New Brunswick New Democratic Party when she accepted the new position, precipitating both a byelection and a leadership convention.

New Democrats chose Allison Brewer of Fredericton as their new provincial leader. Saint John Harbour voters go to the polls on Nov. 14.

You know, Bernie's uncle Ernie is not that thrilled with his nephew. Here is a letter from Mr. Ernie Lord published in the Telegraph Journal:

Spending imbalance angers taxpayer

All of the residents of New Brunswick should be proud and thankful that we are able to enjoy so many great pleasures living in this great province. In future years, our grandchildren will have the pleasure of learning some of the great accomplishments and developments of New Brunswick - provided they are not so deep in debt by an unaffordable tax burden that they can't afford to buy the history books.

It can only be assumed that future research of current-day expenditures will clearly reveal a serious imbalance in the geographic areas of the province.

While some receive millions of dollars for the provincial money tree, others are left to struggle with unemployment, underfunded schools and hospitals and roads that are a total disgrace, all amid soaring gasoline and heating costs.

During the past year the province has cleared the way for huge tax breaks to a large corporation, helped fund a major brewery and provided a cool $2 million foregivable loan for - get this - a new golf course in Dieppe.

When will this type of thing stop?

And more importantly, how much more can we afford?

With $200,000.00 salary and other stuff annually for another 10 years Ms. Weir should be able to pay her energy bills quite well. Also a big fat pension at the end of 10 years.

Lord is making this announcement in Saint John for giving heating oil rebates. Is that a co-incidence or does it has anything to do with by-election?

I went out today as I knew Mr.Lord would be making an appearance in Saint John on Charlotte Street for the opening of Mrs.Weir's office.

So I took advantage of the media to remind Mr.Lord that the only reason he created Mrs.Weir's Job Tittle was to move her out of the way so he can try and steal the poor peoples votes and that was the ONLY reason.

The Irving flyer is being by-est toward this by-election and will not give the Liberal party their just due as far as information reaching the people goes so any opportunity is a golden opportunity as far as getting the message out there.

But I just want to make this perfectly clear.

I went on my own as I knew the LNG group was going to be there so therefore cameras would be also ,of which I took advantage of.

I am in no way nor is the Liberal Party associated with the LNG group.

The main reason I am explaining this is because the Hooton's office is directly across the street from the new office of Mrs.Weir and I know for a fact the CON-servative party will try to connect me with the LNG group as they were making bogus calls as soon as I arrived.

But again we MUST take advantage of the press and or Media...Thank-you

I notice that those only those "not on social assistance" can apply. Don't people who are unemployed and on welfare pay for oil as well? Granted, in many cases they are too poor to afford apartments, but what about other cases?

INteresting that here in Canada the province 'can't do anything'. Meanwhile, another oil producing country, Venezuela, through its distribution company, is providing cheap oil for poor neighbourhoods in the United States and subsidizes oil use for its citizens. Perhaps it's time to give the NEP another shot.

Don't let Lord get this seat, there are still the PC voters who are not happy but can't bring themselves to vote for another party. A vote given to any party right now except the Liberal party is a vote for Hooton. Give Hooton the Booton, please we know Lord needs some air out of that inflated head. Hooton does not care for regular people just wealthy rich or corporate friends.. Action means more than words. Give her aboot vote Dr. Ed Doherty.
