Charles : As promised here is the story I promised you. I stronly suggest you post all of the Information, so nobody can argue or Dispute It :

" The Cheapness Of The New Brunswick Radio Station Media Managers And Their Owners "

I have expressed my frustration a number of times on this issue, both in Letter's To The Editor and on Various Talk Shows in the past. I like many others, I know have been told by people working in the Media Circles in this day and age, We have been told not to let you get on, and talk about the current state of affairs of the Media here in New Brunswick, and Atlantic Canada. { Maybe it's because the Truth hurts ? }

I wish to make it perfectly clear, I have no arguments or any Ill feelings towards the people currently employed in any of the Radio Outlets here in Saint John, Moncton or the Fredericton broadcasting markets. They are just ordinary workers as in any other business outlet, who have to take, and follow orders as to what they can, and cannot do as in { Don't rock the boat if you want to keep your job }

Here in Saint John we have five commercial broadcasting outlets. I think it's a safe bet that everybody know who they are, without myself having to point them out. There are several in Moncton and Fredericton as well.

In March of 2004 when new Radio Station Operation Applications were heard in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for the Fredericton area, all the big Atlantic Canada Companies were applying for a broadcasting License.

300

MBS the owners of 93 CFBC, CIOK K-100 FM, AND C-98 CJCY here in Saint John,had an application before the CRTC to launch a Country Music Format Station. Acadia Broadcasting which id owned by the Irving Empire and the current the owners of Country 94.1 CHSJ FM and their sister station here in Saint John the Wave Fm, had an application before the Commission to Launch a Classic Rock Station in Fredericton.

200

Of Course as most people know FRED FM owned an operated by the Maritime Company " Newcap Broadcasting, " won out in the end and was awarded the License. Do they have live 24/7 announcers, or even somebody babysitting the newsroom during the evening and overnight hours ? I think not, but I could be wrong. And if so I stand corrected.
100
If MBS and Acadia broadcasting where willing to invest Big Dollars in a New Operation in the Fredericton Market Place, how come there is no Live Broadcasting Service here in Saint John 24/7. Even just one of the two companies would be suffice. Listeners would come to know, that at least one of the 2 Companies would be live, or at the very Minimum somebody would be manning the newsroom Live, and not just keep getting an answering machine.

At the same CRTC hearings, Rogers applied for 3 News, Talk and Sports Radio Stations. One in Saint John, Moncton and Halifax, Nova Scotia, They got all 3 application requests. And as big as the Rogers Empire is, the Saint John operation has no live 24/7 News Operation. I even called their newsroom one day and asked one of the news people, Do You Have A Police Scanner in your newsroom to know what's going on ? To which the answer was NO.

I challenge any of your readers Charles to contact any Police Agency either in Saint John or Fredericton and ask them, " How many times have You to wanted to get something Aired of an important nature to the people you serve, but couldn't because there wasn't anybody home at any of the Radio Stations. I bet the answer would shock you all. "

It's one thing for me just to sit here and say all this, but to prove what I have told you about the companies who applied for new broadcasting operations in the Fredericton Market, here are the transcripts from the March, 2004 CRTC hearings that where held in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This is the web site url first :

Again I repeat I have no argument with any of the People working at any of the Above mentioned organizations, they are just ordinary working Stiff's. However the Managers and the owners, that's a different story { lo }

I recently spoke to an emlpoyee of 93 CFBC here in Saint John, and was Told, Sean'er we have a 50,000 Watt Transmitter as you know. And at the very most we are only tranmitting on 6,000 watts. People in Hampton and Grand Bay can hardly hear us. And the Company owners refuse in Inject any Monies to fix our AM Transmitter.

It sucks that radio stations have so little live content. (By the way, this seems a relatively new phenomenon here, but it's not new generally. I remember an episode of the 1970s show WKRP in Cincinnati addressing the trend toward pre-recorded radio programming.)

I wonder, though, is this always profiteering, or is it possible that owners are cutting to the bone because it's become very hard to make a profit owning a radio station these days?

Hi 1:28-Pm,

There's money to be made all right. I don't think if you read all the applicants that tried to get the Fredericton Operation, they'd be applying for it, if they didn't a smell a possible money making press.

Their cutting to the Bone because their Bean Counters tell them to.

It's not about programming anymore,just making More Money, More Money, and Still More Money.

And I'm not saying this to be mean. Thanks for input, appreciate it. Have a good one :

BTW - I remember the WKRP episode you're talking about, it was a Christmas episode, Chistmas To Come.

Hey Sean
From what I hear, this is the beginning of the end for CFBC. I hear that RP is going to make an application to have the licence downgraded from the current one which is for 50,000 watt to a 10,000 watt which I believe is the actual power capability of the backup. Obviouisly their coverage area is alot smaller these days. Would you want to spend a bunch of $$ to advertise on a station which reaches less than half of the people it used to??? People thought it was sad says at oldies93 over the last few years.....get ready, as you ain't seen how low it can go yet. RP ought to have all 3 licences pulled in this city. Dispicable is what it is. I feel bad for all the good people employed by MBS. They deserve better, and so do the citizens in our area. Nice to see you still giving us the straight goods Sean O'

Oh and MJH
The answer is simply "It is not going to be fixed."
The problems with the transmitter are a somple fix. If MBS had any intention of fixing it? It would be fixed by now. Don't hold your breath. Bottom line is there is no intention of spending any money on the transmitter. CFBC is simply being left to dry, and then will be folded and put away for good soon enough.

Thanks for all the responces folks, hopefully I'll be able to remember all the Questions;

I don't think the CRTC will do anything about the Signal Droppage. The only way I can see the CRTC or Industry Canada getting upset would be, if CFBC'S signal was interferring with another station on the same frequency.

Pretty sure even though you have the ticket for say a 50,000 watt operation, they couldn't care if you ran it at 100.00 watts.

I'm not privy to any special information folk's, it's too bad the old girl is Dying a slow Death.

You all saw the letter Charles got from the CRTC, I think you would all basically get the same thing.

The applications you all read were for the proposed Fredericton operation hearings back in 2004, which were held in Halifax.

If anyone should be thanked in any way, shape or form, it should be Charles for allowing me to post the information that was posted.

So many great people have come and gone through the once great doors at 68 Carleton Street.

I think if the owners had any real intention of fixing up the old girl, I think she'd be fixed.

Even if they knocked the power down to 10,000 watts, I've been told their only pumping out 6,000.

Thanks for being interested, and all your kind input.

How does song goe by April Wine, Rock & Roll is a Vicious Game.

God Bless : Medications kickinh in, I'm running on 10 Watts, and my Signal is Fuzzy :>) Thank Charles for allowing the info to be Published Please.

The only time I listen to CFBC is for Talk of the Town. That would suck if we lose TOTT!
