THE PIPELINE WILL GO RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF ROCKWOOD PARK!!!!

rock, originally uploaded by Oldmaison.

It's in the news again and I was told that it was official months ago.

I noticed that I'm receiving a lot of visitors to this site after the search - Pipeline Rockwood Park.

A group from out west made the decision.

Can anyone out there add more to this story? Go ahead and write away.

That depends who is making the decision. As far as I know, the company is called "Maritimes and Northeast" gas, and their canadian headquarters is in Halifax. The company is owned by a partnership with Mobil and another oil company I think, but I can't remember the name. So, depending on who specifically in the company is making the decision, it might or might not be a maritime decision.

I heard it's a decision made from People out west. They don't even have to come down here to have a look??

It hasn't been decided by the National Energy Board in Calgary as of yet. That will be done in the fall. Right now there still is a chance to avert the pipeline away from the park...but you say you have "officially heard" its going thru the park,,,but it's not "official" until it's "officially announced", I guess I will keep on fighting until then.

We should a stand and out by the thousands and tens of thousands; otherwise the power is on their side. Sickening to think a resource which is worth millions will be allowed to be dissected like this; criminal. Yes the park needs money but not at this cost.

Disgusted with everyone talking out of both sides of their mouth and the bull is too much. Premier, MLA's, Mayor and Councillors sold us out and now their the wolves come in like packs and take out every positive thing we have. Revolution will some day take place but now is the time not after the fact. Not proud of the people who could speak up and make a difference. Judgement day will come at some point. Thanks to all the people who still try to make a difference and understand what is really going on. Like I said tens of thousand need to make the difference. Everyone is in their own little world but soon their own little world won't be there.

I do agree with the above. However, you have to remember the power of propaganda. First, how much coverage has ANY LNG issue gained from Irvings media? Almost zero. So first of all, most people have no idea whats going on. Not razzing on Charles but simply not THAT many people come to his site (and even here there hasn't been much in awhile).

Of course we know that 60% of the province can barely even READ let alone search out facts on the issue. Irving's media has essentially brainwashed the majority of New Brunswickers into thinking that what is good for big business is good for New Brunswickers, while convincing the others that you simply can't do anything about it.

Those who are sick of the whole thing tend to simply pack up and get out of this god-forsaken province.

I don't know what the little voices in your head are telling you Charles:) The ultimate decision is made by M&NG, as said their headquarters are in Halifax (for this project) However, M&NG's majority shareholder is Duke Energy, which is an american company which started in the Carolina's.

However, everything they do has to be OK'd by the National Energy Board, which, as mentioned, is located out west, however, they are a federal office, not a 'western' one.

There WOULD be a point to saying 'they should be close to where the action is', however, there hasn't been much action. If we had more independant media perhaps there WOULD be, but it's not like living here and reading the Irving news would give the NEB a different verstion of events.

The following link is the project description to the NEB, it makes for good reading. It was written by a Fredericton Engineering firm.

The point I'd like to stress is that this appears to be FAR from being a 'done deal', just read the presentation to the NEB below. I'll email Charles the map from it if I can.

They have security features on the file, so I can't get the map, but essentially it is the one above but with two 'alternate' proposed routes which go AROUND the park. As stated, they haven't yet made a final determination, so by all means, don't just 'be disgusted' with people, do up pamphlets, call St.John councillors, get BUSY. Since nobody here knew about this, you can assume NOBODY else does. So start spreading the word.

The report showed very poor turnout at the public meetings, if people stay silent then of course these companies and governments will do what they want. It was just a very small group that got them to propose the alternate routes. Ironically, if you do a search on "Friends of Rockwood" they don't even have a website and one of the links simply goes to the NEB site.

So if nobody cares..why would they change anything? There's no point in griping about it.

HI: rockwood park is owned by the tupper trust, and under the control of the saint john horticultural society. period. the trust does not allow the land to be used for any purpose other than schools and hospitals. period. nothing else may be allowed to be there, nothing at all.
this fight is an ongoing fight, every new council and mayor want to turn rockwood park into a commercial entity. but it is not possible, by the terms of the trust. not the mayor, not the council, no one can change the use of the park.
to change the terms of the trust takes an act of the n.b. legislature, and i am sure that there will be a big problem with that, as has happened in the past.
according to the trust, the paved roads in the park have to come out, and the power lines must come down.
and why is the map showing a circle around the park? why is the plan going out of the way to run through the park?
why is the pipeline not following the railroad right of way? or across the irving house at the top of the hill, close to the entrance of the park?
anyway, the city and the private sector will have to find a new way to go, that route is legally not possible.

The lines around the park are the proposed 'alternate routes'. I suspect they aren't serious about going straight through, but just want all the protests to focus on that one thing, and not the fact that virtually NONE of the natural gas flowing under New Brunswick will benefit the province.

The above misses the central point, that it takes an act of the NB legislature. Now, the province immediately granted Irvings huge tax concessions for their LNG terminal, so it's not like they WON"T get involved. They'll bend over for oil companies faster than you can say 'hi, this is bernie lord, I just lost the election and now I need a job, do you have a board of directors I can sit on?"

And read up on your charter rights, canadians have NO property rights. If the government WANTS your land they can simply take it, that's already happened in many areas where I think $1500 an acre is what they offer even along the shore.

Even the states don't have absolute property rights. Most states have whats called 'eminent domain', which means the gas company knocks on your door, offers you a (usually small) amount of money, then if you refuse they simply take you to court.

WIth eminent domain if a community can prove that the community can benefit from the use of your land in a different way (such as with a pipeline) then they can take it from you.

Canada doesn't even need that, as said there are ZERO property rights, and that includes trusts. The city can take the land, but usually doesn't because of the political fallout so uses the province. Like I said though, I doubt they are seriously thinking of going straight through, that was just a distraction but you never know.

We ought to squeeze as much money out of this company as we can if they're going to being going through public land.

DAVID???? What are you hearing from that murdered Canadian Couple? You live in that area????

Yes I am one of those ones disgusted and I have been involved; called written, phoned, went to meetings, attended council for hours. Where is everyone else? Ten of thousands is what we need! Very disappointed in the people who don't join us and make a statement and not let the billionaires and politician make bargains with their wealthy friends.

Our Mayor seems to be enjoying himself on our dollar!

The time to squeeze all the money out of them was before the LNG Deal was agreed on. The people want them to go back revisit the deal and get the millions owed to us. All of sudden it is okay to try to get in bed with them and get a few dollars. Sickening knowing our area needs so much and we constantly turn our backs. Glad you are happy in your life and it doesn't effect you; I believe it takes a toll on all of us and our future families.
