WHY WOULD THE IRVINGS WISH TO DESTROY THIS HISTORICAL SITE????

A historic mansion at a private school near Saint John, N.B., has been saved temporarily from the wrecker's ball.

Lawyers for Rothesay-Netherwood private school promised not to allow the demolition of South House, which was built in the 1850s, until a court hearing to determine the fate of the mansion proceeds next week.

The controversy has pitted two of the province's wealthiest tycoons, both alumni of the elite school, against each other.

J.K. Irving of the Irving industrial empire is on the school's executive committee, which voted unanimously last week to demolish the building.

But Derek Oland, chairman of Moosehead Breweries, is leading the campaign to save the historic site.

"It's a terrible example of administration that a school would tear down a 156-year-old building and turn off people who have thought a lot about the school," Oland said.

The three-storey mansion, the last of the school's original buildings, is on Heritage Canada's list of the 10 most endangered buildings.

But the school says it's too expensive to maintain, and applied to the Town of Rothesay for a demolition permit on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, lawyers for the South House Restoration Committee applied for an injunction to stop the demolition.

During an afternoon court hearing, however, Warwick Gilbert, representing the school's executive commitee, agreed to the halting of any demolition efforts until the case goes to court on Monday.

Gilbert stressed, though, that the hearing shouldn't be delayed because the school wants to tear down the building next week during the March break.

The private school's headmaster, Paul Kitchen, says he's not worried that students might try to stop the demolition.

"If the demolition happens, it's as safe as it possibly can be. I mean safety's pretty fundamental."

Well, we see what 'tradition' means to the Irvings. Is anybody surprised?

Is this house in close proximity to the Allison (?) property that Paul Zed and Judith Irving lived in prior to the divorce??

Maybe Judith darling is trying to acquire some additional grounds and Daddy has the drag to get it for her.

JD bought Paul's first house and tore it down just up past the Commons to get the land. Another beautiful old home gone.

History buffs? Foooogedaboutit!
