Knudson wins Liberal nod in a walk
Candidate in last election will carry party banner in Saint John Portland

Colleen Knudson demolished the competition in winning the Liberal nomination for Saint John Portland by taking 81 per cent of the vote.

Ms. Knudson, who won 313 of the 384 votes cast, will now carry the Liberal banner and try to knock off incumbent Conservative and Environment Minister Trevor Holder in the next provincial election.

Premier Bernard Lord contends the election won't be held until the fall of 2007. But Liberal leader Shawn Graham says he won't miss an opportunity to bring the government down and force a snap election.

"It doesn't get better than that," Mrs. Knudson said after winning the nomination.

"I was confident in the room "...but you're never really sure."

Ms. Knudson was a nurse at the Saint John Regional Hospital for more than 36 years. She is currently working at the hospital as a planning consultant for community programs.

Ms. Knudson - the Liberal candidate in the last provincial election - faced little competition, but a stirring speech by Bruce Court left some wondering if there might be a second ballot. But even Mr. Court's fiery speech couldn't sink the Knudson political juggernaut.

Mr. Court took to the stage second after Mrs. Knudson delivered the slickest speech of the evening to the approximately 500 people at the Centre Communautaire Samuel de Champlain.

His tough words about stopping the natural gas pipeline through Rockwood Park and about stamping out poverty brought cheers from the crowd. His salvos fired in the premier's direction further revved up the partisan gathering.

"We do not need the premier speaking out of both sides of his mouth . . . building golf courses for his buddies in Moncton to buy more votes," Mr. Court said.

But his entrance song, Thunderstruck by AC/DC, and the tough words weren't enough to shake Mrs. Knudson from delegates' minds when they marked an X at the ballot box.

Mrs. Knudson almost won the seat in the 2003 provincial election narrowly losing to Mr. Holder, who won by a narrow margin of 169 votes - 2,476 to 2,307.

A political neophyte in the last election, Mrs. Knudson said this time she'll be much better educated in the rules of the political game.

"I know how to run a campaign, for one thing," she said.

Sylvia Sparks, executive director of PRUDE Inc., was the third candidate in the race.

Former Saint John police chief Clarence (Butch) Cogswell bowed out of the race just days before the nomination meeting. He was touted as one of the favourites, but offered no explanation as to why he chose to pull out of the race.

Mr. Holder has held the Saint John Portland seat since 1999 and was appointed to cabinet in 2005. The nomination meeting coincided with an announcement in the legislature by Mr. Holder that he would be tabling a pollution initiative that would directly benefit Saint John.

Provincially, the Liberals have said they are going to run a campaign that shows their leader, Shawn Graham, as down to earth and Mr. Lord as aloof and out of touch with the common voter. In the opinion polls, the best Mr. Graham has been able to do is equal Mr. Lord's popularity with the province's voters.

Mr. Graham, 16 Liberal MLAs and federal MP Paul Zed attended the event.

Before Mr. Graham took to the stage to pump up the crowd, the MLAs lined up on stage. When Mr. Graham hit the stage, he high-fived each MLA like he had just hit a home run and was crossing home plate.

"You can feel it in this room tonight," said Mr. Graham. "There's a buzz, an excitement, an energy."

Mr. Graham thinks Saint John Portland is a seat the Liberals can take.

"For the past seven years we've had a Conservative government that's been on cruise control," he said.

It means the people of Saint John no longer have any interest in being led by the likes of Court, any Court, and their goon-like tactics. Court should get a ticket to jail, not to the legislature. People have had enough of his unlawful tactics and uniformed rhetoric.

It means that Bruce Court and what he represents is NOT at all credible.

500 people? That's how many liberal party members in the riding? So 500 people decide for almost 100,000. Gosh, it makes sense to me-it is New Brunswick after all.

Meaning, you are reading a lot into nothing. Many people say they will be there and forget, don't care or have something they would rather do.

Saint John is very passive and have short term memory.

Congratulations to the candidates who have the character to give it their best shot. Thankyou to the people who vote and they had to live in that riding; sad to think not many showed their support to any of the things that goes on.
Credible are the people who were there. Don't shoot your mouth off if you were not there to do what is right. We don't take our rights seriously enough.

Few people make decisions of many; that is Saint John and that is NB at it finest! Discouraging at best.

Again thank you for the people who ran and those who showed up to vote!

First of all the candiates should be praised for putting their necks on the line. Lets not forget that all three of these candiates were there last night for the Liberal party, what they want is the strongest Liberal party to take down that PC (thrash) government. This nomination could of had a competly different outcome if it was held at another location such as Lorne school. I was in attendence Wednesday night and I saw alot of money. By that i mean alot of people with money. SJ Portland and Harbour would be the two hardest ridings in the provinces to attrack people to with the amount of poverty. Mr. Court seems to be the voice of the poor, and if the nomination is in a spot that is difficult for citizens with no transporation to attend then his people will not be able to make it. Alot of people that were there wednesday night wouldnt not go to a Nomination at Lorne school and thats a fact. Mr. Court is just a spring chicken when it comes to the political scene, hopefully this loss will motivate him to be an even stronger voice and I do not think he will not disapear. Just think of what the Legislature could of had Abel and Bruce look out, i am sure they would of kept Mr. Gramhem to his words. Some people do not like how Mr. Court does things those people are the people who do not like hearing the truth, and thats what this man trys to do.
As for Mrs. Knudson congrats. Hopefully she will stick to her words, she knows the issues of SJ Portland. Issues like Poverty not three soccer fields across from where the nomination was held put there by the PC Government. When I see those fields I think of how many hungry children that money could have fed. Mrs. Knudson is surrounded by people who have experience with living the poverty areas and who will keep her in check.

Court is the voice of the average person soon to be poor or already there. The wealthy have people already protecting their rights. Average hard working people can't help anymore. Leave our few coins alone. Gouge and overtaxed. It is not the poor anymore; wake up before there is only the Billionaires, millionaires and the rest of us who have no money to pay our bills!

It mean that people are tired of somebody trying to make a name for themselves, and possibly getting elected [ so they can do the same things that he and his band of Goons - In My Personal Opinion Only ] are always mouthing off about.

Besides he can always go back to repairing Motorcycles [ lol ] but he might starve to death doing that.
