Liberals will end deadlock if Tories call election

New Brunswick's Liberal opposition is offering to end its stalemate with the government in exchange for the promise of a fall election.
The provincial legislature has ground to a halt in recent weeks as deadlocked MLAs on both sides of the house fight over whatever issue catches their fancy.
The stalemate is creating an almost circus atmosphere at the legislature.
Last week, Independent MLA Frank Branch accused the premier of being part of a conspiracy to ruin his political career.
The next day, Liberal opposition members demanded the resignations of Speaker Michael (Tanker) Malley for faling to be impartial and Premier Bernard Lord and Transportation Minister Paul Robichaud for releasing private information about a New Brunswick citizen. Just when it seemed things couldn't get any stranger, the premier's press secretary resigned.
The distractions meant the business of the house was largely ignored, and so was the fact that the Progressive Conservative government doesn't have enough votes to pass its budget in committee.
Liberal Leader Shawn Graham is now offering to end the war of words and allow business to continue through a compromise. Graham says Liberal MLA Eric Allaby will take over the Speaker's job– which would give the Tories enough votes to pass their budget – in exchange for an election call in September 2006.
Graham says the premier has agreed to take the proposal to his caucus, even though the Lord has said he wants to wait until 2007 to call an election.
"New Brunswickers cannot afford to wait for another year for this government's inaction on a key number of files," Graham said. "We can't waste another year. That's why we feel a compromise can be reached. That's why we're providing a fair and reasonable solution today and that solution is we'll take on the burden of putting a Speaker in the chair who is impartial and neutral, and if the government accepts that, it also has to accept to bring forward a general election on the 25th of September."

Could not have said it better myself!
But as always you never get everything you ask for.
Mr.Lord should do the right thing and call it right now.
Put himself and his Ministers to the test and see if they do indeed deserve those pensions they are so desperately trying to protect at every oppertunity that comes along even if it does imbarrass the hell out The House of Representitives and the citizens of New Brunswick.
Just once as it was before Mr.Lord got into power, Why will he NOT let the people of this province give him the proof that he is as popular a Premier as he makes himself out to be by speaking for us instead of us speaking for ourselves?
Gease last time I checked Bernard Lord was premier and also the premier is suppose to not have any political pull on the speaker so the liberals say. Why is Shawn trying to get the premier to make the speaker's chair political now? Why does Shawn think he can dictiate the election. DESPERATE is all I can say. Shawn is done if he can't get an election. Liberals will do anything to get power now and I mean anything. How about a liberal trying to get a drunk driver a license??? looks some bad, is this what we can expect from the liberal party?
Tanker you have our full support in the Miramichi, your our underdog and you always are fighting for us. Heck I only would vote PC when Tanker runs and I will continue to til he gives up politics and I know there are lots more people like me. SHAME on you Shawn for trying to pick on the little guy SHAME SHAME. Miramichi will remember what you are doing to Tanker.
You think Tanker Malley is not political Speaker. May be you are right as he is result of blackmailing. His own colleague MLA said that. After he completed his blackmailing he rejoined the PC party and announced that from the Speaker's chair.
If you are proud of Malley then there is something wrong with you. Are you the guy involved in tobacco smuggling and did not appear in court?
Hey MJ i have read your material in the past and all I can say is shame on you. You have no class just like the rest of your friends if you even have any. Picking on the little guy, shame on you. What do you want to pick on some body all the time I am glad that you are not in the Miramichi or you would get a raking from a lot of people.
We back you Tanker 100% in the Miramichi and we are going to work hard to give you the seat back as for others who bad mouth you Tanker, remember WE SUPPORT YOU 100% and don't let Sjers dictitate to you or try to get you down.
Tanker is indeed a joke. Blackmailed his want into speaker's chair. Real Miramichi folks do not support him. These are some phonies from fredericton. May be it is that girl who got the job as part of Malley package. What is her (your) name again?
