Charles,

i think there is a better chance of tanker malley blowing a big fart and taking out most of the Miramichi than a pipeline explosion in Saint John.

We get no facts just people who feel they can do as they want and it is best for all. Just ask Mayor McFarlane!

Can't tell if that comment is supposed to mean there's a good chance or a bad one!:)

Everything involves chances, that's why the issue needs debate and constant mentioning. Charles brings it up, but is no expert so people have to chime in.

Two or three months ago there was an accident in Fredericton involving LNG lines, the blame was laid on 'workers who were not trained enough'.

No comment was ever made on that. These companies make a lot of money, and they hire contractors at cut rate prices, even ones, apparantly, that aren't even trained. There is one website that talks about how one contractor got bilked by the gas company for work he did but wasn't paid for.

So the question is, why aren't these contractors trained properly? Where is the government legislation that ensures they are licensed and trained for that particular work? More importantly, where is the media coverage of the issue? Imagine if a social worker was derelict in their duties, the Irving paper would have a huge write up calling the whole social services industry into question, but not here.

Likewise, as Canada is more involved in military exploits with the americans, that increases the likelihood of terrorist sabotage. So where are the questions of what the federal government is doing as far as security goes? I have a feeling that if I wanted to I could find a gas line (they're clearly marked), dig down, and shoot holes into it and it would take hours, or even days for them to find it. And who pays for the repairs? And who pays for the environmental damage?

In the case of the terminal, who knows what the liability is? Who has even asked? While it may be 'improbable' there's a reason why the City of Boston recently closed theres down on security concerns.

Notice that the Irving papers never ask, let alone answer those questions. So is the first kaboom a 'gift' where government pays the cost because of some legislation that nobody heard of, sort of like the way we had to pay for the Irving Whale?

Will Irving likewise claim that although its their pipeline its 'techinically' not their land, so they aren't liable? Likewise, is their puppet corporation set up so that its limited liability status simply means that in the case of a bad insurance claim they simply declare bankruptcy and the Irvings walk away from the whole ordeal, leaving taxpayers to pay for it.

So an explosion may be 'implausible', but so are the chances you will die in a car accident today, but you will probably wear a seatbelt anyway. When some of these questions get answered, perhaps the pictures of explosions will occur less frequently.

There are no LNG lines in Fredericton. The natural gas in Fredericton flows as a pressurized gas. Perhaps we should all attempt to learn about natural gas before we spout off all sorts of claims about it. Most of the fear surrounding natural gas is due to lack of education.
