Charlie, nice to see some of the Tories out to support the pro-life demonstration. When they were in power, you'd never see them out there. Now they're in opposition, they must have changed their views. (grin)
Gee, Anonymous 4:43, you think? :-) It's too bad how time in opposition gets these politicians to listen a little more. Also interesting to see how Jody Carr has become "aware" of these issues - when he was a cabinet minister for the brief time he had in that role, he didn't pay much attention to anyone. Suddenly, he's becoming "Mr. Caring". Spare us from the political hacks of this world! :-)
What I would like to see is that these politicians do their research, and realize that Life does indeed begin at the moment of Conception, and ends at Natural Death. If we can get them to acknowledge that Scientific fact, then we have come along way in our progress in insuring the rights of the Unborn Child in the Womb. What is needed is legislation that protects the Unborn child from non-responsible mothers and fathers who just want to open their legs and get their jollys and then say well, it is not a life at all it is just a blob of nothing. Abortion on demand is just a free ticket to be permiscuis and iresponsible with no accountibility for their actions. and that we cannot allow on the New Brunswick Tax Payer's dollar
I have to disagree with Mr. McKay. The choice to have an abortion is not one that women take lightly. It's not "I got my jollies and got pregnant - oops". Granted, that may happen but I would hazard to guess, most, if not all women who make the choice for abortion make it based on their individual situation. Why is it okay when it's recommended by a doctor but not when a woman makes the choice.
I am not picking sides, but I understand both. Let's look at examples for abortion: Incest - you are raped and get pregnant by your own father - horrible - a woman should not be forced to carry that child.
Rape - a woman gets pregnant through one of the most violent acts that can be committed against her - should she have to carry that child?
Living in an abusive relationship; being homeless; suffering from addictions which can affect a child's mental health; youth - nothing to give a child and no opportunities to provide for him/her.
I could go on but it's not about politics, it's about a woman's choice. Women in our country have been forced to endure unwanted preganncies for years. Look at the children brought into this world unwanted and die at the hands of their parents by abuse and neglect. Before we judge their decision, let's look at their situation.
The problem with the solutions of the Michael McKay's of the world is that unfortunately twofold. First when they suggest you read the "research" they only mean that which is sanctified by the pro life side. The fact is that while "when life begins" is being debated by the scientific community, it is only some religions and of course pro life advocates that insist it's at conception. Not because they have the unbiased peer reviewed research to back their claims but because that is what they choose to believe. Most real research suggest otherwise thus making the call to read the research from a pro lifer seem somewhat humorous. Secondly, while there is merit in discouraging abortion as a method of birth control it is ingenuous on the pro life side to argue that they don't want tax payers dollars going to pay for abortion on demand. The fact is that is only a convenient point to argue in public. I purely monetary issue that they like to throw out there to try and win support. The reality of course is that they would ban all and any abortions if they had the power. They just know that arguing about money will win them more support than the actual promotion of what they really want. That's why rarely do you hear a supporter on the pro life side tell you what they really want...only what they don't want. At least in mixed company.
