Tuesday of the Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Luke 12: 35-38

Jesus said to his disciples: "Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master's return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants."

Introductory Prayer: God our Father, you created me to glorify you. I pray I will be able to have you ever present in my life as I journey towards your Kingdom. Allow me to be a tireless apostle. Help me serve you by serving others.

Petition: Lord, please grant me the grace to serve you.

1. Await Your Master Christ is our master. It is he we are awaiting. We wait with eagerness, as children do when their dad is late coming home from work. They sit by the candle lit on the window sill and peer out into the darkness to see when their father will arrive. Upon his arrival, they wrap themselves around his legs as he reaches down to embrace them in his arms. Are we there, ever ready to greet Christ when he comes into our lives? Are we looking for our master with the simplicity of children at all moments of our life?

2. He Will Proceed to Wait on Them The relationship with Christ is a two-way street. It is communion of persons. We have to struggle to do our part, and we know our Lord will shower us with the joy and the graces needed to be his servants. Many times he will bring us human or spiritual consolations while we serve. This is a beautiful image of our master, Christ. He comes and serves us. He lifts the load for us. He does not bind up heavy loads on our shoulders which we cannot bear. He shows us that love is a self-donation to others.

3. Blessed Are Those Servants The Jews divided the night into three watches. Christ says those servants are blessed who can persevere the whole night in their watch. We are blessed indeed if we persevere our whole life long, if we persevere in our daily commitments with Christ, and if we persevere in our prayers. The blessed servants lasted all three shifts. I can’t help but think of the disciples who could not stay awake in the garden with Christ. It is not enough to do good once in a while. We must strive to persevere day after day, minute after minute.

Conversation with Christ: Christ Jesus, give me the grace to persevere in my love for you. Guard my soul from laziness and self-seeking. Allow me never to grow tired in serving, but to live in a healthy tension seeking holiness for love of you.

Resolution: I will do an act of service for someone such as an employee, child, or friend.
