The Conservative Party is pretty grassroots so the packed house isn't a surprise at all. That's the reason the Conservatives raise far more money than the Liberals. Thanks to Jean Chretein there are no big donors anymore, you need lots of little ones. The Conservatives have that, the Liberals do not. That's why Conservative votes are tougher for other parties to get while there are more swing votes in the other parties.

Thats not the reason, the reason is that they are in power and are handing out the goodies. Parties in power always have lots more money than the other guys. Conservative votes are no more tougher to get than other votes.

Not true. The Conservatives were pulling in more money from individual donors than the Liberals before the 2006 election. The Liberals use to pull in more when it was a free for all and companies could pretty much give what they wanted (IE : sponsorship scandal). When Chretein changed the rules, he damaged his own Party although given the frostry relationship with Paul Martin that was probably his intention.

Maybe Chretein just did it because it was in fact the right thing to do...(But of course entertaining that idea would require a non-biased opinion as apposed to a spinknion). Party financing is like a pendulum all parties go through their cycles. It just happens to be the Conservatives turn at the top. Give them time, they will blow it just as they have all done in the past.

You would be hard pressed to find a Liberal who even believes that JP.

That is of course always debatable (and not nearly as common a thought among Liberals as you like to suggest). But it is obvious that its not hard to find a Conservative that believes it. But then again Conservatives always were more prone to conspiracy theories than most.

Riggghhttt, the sponsorship scandal was a Conservative conspiracy theory. C'mon, even the Liberals don't buy that anymore.

Come on spinks try and stay focused here. I thought we were talking about changing the rules to make fund raising by political parties more transparent and honest BECAUSE of the sponsorship scandal. You know full well that no one considers the scandal a conspiracy. (it is interesting though that YOU would think that was what I was thinking)..But then again considering that the Conservatives can't even report their own campaign contributions honestly I can see why you like things murkier the better.

Yes, the Liberals have always been a bastion of honesty jp. :)

Well thats I pretty bold statement spinks, I can't say I could even say that about the Liberals or the Conservatives myself. But then again being as unbiased as I am I can see that no one is perfect.
