Feb 5,2008 Chantal Eustace (Vancouver Sun) - A 26-year-old woman was found dead in a Chilliwack jail cell Monday.Laura Eileen Coward, a Chilliwack resident who suffered from a “previously existing medical issue,” had been arrested Friday on a warrant for breach of probation and assault.
A guard who was sent to transport Coward to court Monday morning found her to be “non-responsive,” according to an RCMP news release.
“Despite efforts of medical staff to revive the female she was pronounced dead at the scene,” the release said.
The RCMP’s integrated homicide investigation team launched an investigation.
Part of its mandate is to look into all deaths of people who die in police custody.
IHIT Cpl. Dale Carr said nothing unusual had come to light yet in Coward’s death, but the investigation will continue.
Cause of death was not known yet, but an autopsy was to be conducted today or Wednesday.
Coward was known to police and had substance abuse issues, Carr indicated.

FREDERICTON - Health officials in New Brunswick started examining files Tuesday on thousands of medical tests as the work of a suspended pathologist went under the microscope.
The announcement Monday that 15,000 laboratory tests from the past 13 years must be re-examined has shocked people in Miramichi, N.B., where the pathologist, Dr. Rajgopal Menon, did most of his work.
Terry Whalen Sr., a Miramichi resident who was diagnosed with prostate cancer several years ago, said there is a great deal of concern in the community.
"You go to the doctor, the hospital or health people for treatment and you assume you're in good hands," said Whalen, who runs a prostate cancer support group for residents of northeastern New Brunswick.
You SHOULD be interested in how she was treated because at the rate you are going... you'll be seeing the inside of that facility sometime soon as well.
