If you've been following the news lately, it should come as no surprise that New Brunswick is losing people faster than it's gaining them.
A recent study by Johann Vallerand, Jill Hiscock and Sylvie Berthelot - "The New Economy and Atlantic Canada's Brain Drain: Can We Do Something About it?-" investigates our new hyper-competitive global economy and whether or not the Atlantic provinces have the human resources needed to be able to stay on an even footing with other economies.
Hiscock, a faculty member in the School of Business at the Nova Scotia Community College, points out that one of the region's major issues is that we're not attracting youth. In fact, 40 per cent of graduates from the 18 universities across the Atlantic Canada end up leaving the area. Hiscock also says that Atlantic Canada not only has to cope with the brain-drain, but also with poor levels of immigration. In fact, of the 254,359 immigrants who came to Canada last year, only 3,929 chose the Atlantic provinces, 1.5 per cent of all newcomers to the region.
