OUR FIRST SPIN STORY - PLEASE COMMENT

Mr.Lord is so quick to hide behind the fact that a 5 year old referendum determined that 50% of this province chose to keep VLT's for(Entertainment)how about calling him to task on holding a referendum on smoking in public places and let the people of this province decide whether they think that would be entertaining or how about a referendum on whether or not people would think it is entertaining to smoke pot in this province or a referendum on whether or not the people of this province want a LNG plant here. And let's not forget that we only need 52% of the province to qualify for these referendums. Also this will give him the oppertunity to continue doing what he does best hide behind something or someone.

I'll play. :)

I think referendums are a bad idea. First, because they're very divisive, everywhere they have them.

Second, because they end up being big money games, with lobby groups spending piles of dough and too often drowning out the little guy.

Third, I think they make politicians lazy. Let them make tough decisions and then face the music next election.

Fourth, they cost a fortune.

Finally, on the suggested issues for referendum: (1) In the referendum the people decided we would keep VLTs legal. That doesn't mean we can't reduce their number, like NS is doing, and/or their hours of play, like Tim Smith suggests. (2) Smoking in indoor public places is harmful to everyone there. Even if the majority wants to, it shouldn't be able to force me to stay out of malls and restaurants if I want to avoid lung cancer. No referendum. (3) The province has no say on whether pot is illegal, so a provincial referendum on pot would be an even bigger waste of money than other referendums. (4) LNG plant is no issue, except for the Not In My Back Yard people, no one cares. They DO care about the tax break, but that's another story.

Fight! :)

I think that's point of sarcasm from the original comment is that lord is using this 5 year old referendum and as the comment above suggests is a bad idea because it is very divisive as it is based on the northern portion of the province southern N.B. voted them down but because his voters of northern N.B. did him a 5 year old favor not knowing what kind of disaster was to be incurred by the province as a whole he now says too bad and there in lies the problem.

Lord hides behind something and someone alright. If Lord government had not screwed on Orimulsion deal we would have more than enough money to pay for Point Lepreau refurbishment. Now he is trying to blame the federal government for no-decision on Point Lepreau. Hiding behind feds.

If Point Lepreau was in Moncton he would have made the decision to refurbish anyway as he was quick to give $6 million to Molson jeopardizing the family business in Saint John, Moosehead. He is premier of Moncton

How about people actually taking responsibility for their own stupid actions instead of always blaming the government!!!!!!!!!

It don't matter who you elect to power because it's the bureacrats or the Irving's bureaucrats who runs the show!!! In this case? The Province!!!!!

“How about people actually taking responsibility for their own stupid actions instead of always blaming the government.” A commentator said above.

Would you please give this advice to Bernard Lord? Because he blames everybody but himself for his blunders.

Orimulsion is the fault of NB Power
High gas prices are fault of international markets; he is forgetting raising taxes on gas also
All other problems facing NBers are the fault of previous Liberal government
Non-decision on Point Lepreau is the fault of the federal government
Addiction to VLTs is the fault of individuals according to the commentator but Lord government is addicted to over $100 million annual revenues from VLTsa and that is why refusal to do something about it. So Lord is going to blame that on individuals who are addicted.

May be Bernard Lord needs rehabilitation from his incorrigible habit of blaming others and his addiction to revenues from VLTs.

Maybe that comentor might listen to talk of the town and see that bernard although this province is basicly broke and there is no money for anybodies issues of consern putting this aside now bernard has desided through his great wisdom that this would be the time to add a one million dollar upgrade to his office what might he say on that ,would that be ok with him???

Mr. Leblanc I have question for you. If you say it does not matter who we elect it is the bureaucrats who run the government. In that case why should we not abolish the elected part of government? Why waste money on elections. Then waste money on the salaries, offices of elected politicians. We stand to save millions and millions of dollars that way. Would you define the role of elected politicians if they are that useless according to you since bureaucrats run the government.

Reply reg. the citizen of the week:

...Every person has good and bad in them...Charles wants to challenge people to bring out the "good" in people and make a better world! He's praising a man for doing a good deed and not judging him, on his ordinary behavior! We can pat ourselves on the back for not having to pan handle,,,but, how many of us would of taken the bag of money and not given it to the owner????????....But, I also agree that it could of been a "trap"... Years ago, my daughter (around age 12) had all of her savings of $100. oo in her purse...She left her purse on the chair in a cafe, at the mall...We saw a movie before she remembered that her purse was missing....We went to the security office later and a worker had turned it in, earlier! Now, the worker did an honest thing...but, she might have thought that someone was testing her, on her honesty, by leaving a purse there and trapping her with security camera's...and if she took the money...>>>would she have been prosecuted??? So, sometimes people are honest and good when being watched and sometimes people are evil and greedy when no one is watching... It's just what "side" of the person, we see! And, what's in every person's heart ??????????,,,, Only, God know's for sure!!!!! And, only God knows Mikes heart and if Mike was doing a good deed for the day/minute ; then he should be praised for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But, I also agree that a strong man should not be out begging!

Where is the help to get the addict off of alcohol and drugs???...Where are the jobs for people that want to work??? Where is the support and encouragement and help for these people....or does society just want to "rid" themselves of them?????? And, why do the rich people just want to close their eyes???????!!!!!!!!!!!!

I kind of sense that Charles does and says what's in his heart--most of the time and that's why people like to hear what he has to say and Charles is interested in what's going on in the the heart's and minds of people! I just wish there was a way for him to get paid for this service; in "representing" the people and communicating their wishes!.......

I got the stupidest card that I ever seen come from the Conservative Stephen Harper, On the top it says A meal not fit for a Sea King and the first line reads Moldy bread, rancid meat and sour milk. Thats what's on the menu for the crew of the Sea King helicopters, thanks to the Liberal government.

We have all had moldy bread but do the liberals feed them this everyday, I don't think so. By the looks at who the conservatives feed around here, they picked the wrong subject to take the Liberals on, I rest my case.

((IN MY OPINION))!!
After going to Canadaeast.com
to check out the headlines to determin whether or not there might be anything in it today worth paying a dollar for and having an interest in the vlt senario unfolding in this province a headline got my attention so I went out to by the paper thinking I was going to get new details of interest to this story but was not the case all they did was exploit the paper to lead you to believe that was what you were going to see but to my disbelief the Irving paper decided that the shortest letter in the opinion section warranted a the head title and as far as I am conserned deliberitly to sell more papers knowing that vlt stories sell more papers at this time,I say for shame to them.

I was told a terrible story this morning by an aquaintance of mine she has been addicted to vlts off&on for a little over 9 years and has been a bit more successful lately at controlling her cravings to play but she has recently found out her 18 yr old son has become addicted to them over the last 8-10 months and she was horrified to find out that he isn't even old enough to legally play them yet and he told her when she seen him playing and questioned him about it that he has put about $7000.00 in them through stealing, borrowing and what he gets from part time work and he also has a couple of friends who play with him he told her that access is easier in the day time because you blend in with the day players and have better luck not being asked for I.D.
I knew that some under aged people were playing but that still shocked me and I told her I am very worried about a growing trend of youngsters getting into this addiction but that I really don't think that the government has any plans in place to improve the situation and that I can't see too many owners asking for I.D. because they are really hurting from the non-smoking inforcement and so will take whatever they can get anyway they can and this will probably start showing a growing trend in the future unless something drastic is done to end these machines being everywhere you go.

That's the thing,
See your parents drink - you try drinking
See your parents smoke - you try smoking
See your parents doing drugs - you try drugs
See your parents gamble - you try gambling
these are all community problems with community concequences.
