Office of the Premier
Five goals for next five years the focus of 2006 state of the province address (06/02/02)

FREDERICTON (CNB) - Premier Bernard Lord outlined five ambitious new goals for the province for the next five years at the 2006 state of the province address Thursday evening at the Delta Fredericton Hotel in Fredericton.

In his address, Lord spoke of New Brunswick's successes, challenges and opportunities.

"We have achieved great success," Lord said. "The state of the province is good. And in many ways it's better than it has ever been. However, it is not yet the best that it can be.

"We face some key challenges. Our province is confronted with the reality of a quickly changing world and its effects on our economy and society.

"We have big new opportunities. Our province is poised to gain from the foundation we have built to enjoy more economic success and social progress.

"We can achieve more together. Our province will reach its full potential by harnessing our strengths, sharpening our focus and by working in partnership with each other.

"We can reach new goals. Our province is ready to tackle new goals that will accelerate and surpass our success. Five new goals for the next five years."

Lord then set out the five ambitious goals to be achieved in the next five years.

"New Brunswick, the smart province. Within five years I want New Brunswick to have the highest increase in workers with post-secondary education in Canada.

"New Brunswick, the investment province. Within five years I want New Brunswick to have the lowest tax burden east of Alberta, and the biggest decrease in the unemployment rate in Canada.

"New Brunswick, the wellness province. Within five years I want New Brunswick to have the biggest increase in physical fitness participation of any province in Canada.

"New Brunswick, the clean province. Within five years I want New Brunswick to have the greatest reduction in air and water pollution in Canada.

"New Brunswick, the inclusive province. Within five years I want New Brunswick to have the biggest reduction of poverty rate in Canada."

Lord concluded by inviting New Brunswickers to participate in future issues forums, regional roundtables and a provincial summit designed to move the province forward, faster, together.

Well, we know just how much bullshit it is from the last SIX years:

New Brunswick- the slowest increase in workers with post secondary educaction in canada

New Brunswick, the investment province. The lowest decrease in unemployment in Canada. And the only reason it has decreased is that the province is one of the few with a decreasing population, the highest increase in public sector hiring, and one of the highest with ineligible applicants to the EI program.

Of course the other part is true, NB is tied with Ontario for lowest corporate tax rate. So Irving and McCain are VERY happy, even though NB has the lowest private investment in Canada. So clearly low taxes doesn't spur investment.

New Brunswick, the wellness province. New Brunswickers are the MOST unhealthy in Canada, and six years of Lord has done NOTHING to change this. There is no more emphasis on phys ed in schools, no more emphasis on health in the private sector, nothing.

"New Brunswick, the clean province.
This may actually succeed because we see mills closing all over the province! Hurray, less pollution, and less jobs and investment. Of course if Bennett Environmental cranks up the toxic soil cleaning, well, so much for the 'clean province'-more like 'the cancer province'.

"New Brunswick, the inclusive province. Lowest poverty rates? Perhaps he's going to pull a Harris, make panhandling and loitering illegal so the poor end up in jail or head to less draconian places. Remember, this is a province that STILL is the only province to give NO rights to boarding house lodgers.Even after six years.

Here's yet another way to show that the Premier has ZERO vision. 'I have a plan'-but let's hear yours! This after six years. I suppose we shouldn't be surprised, for six years the government's focus has been on begging companies not to close their doors, right now isn't he in Norway doing some begging?

..and an 'n' in 'aroud', and lose the 'in' (dangling participle:)

That's wrong above. The 'roundtables' are designed for a purpose, just like the 'forums' held on the jaacko-pyrrhy report where everybody had a say but in the end they ignored everybody but the corporations.

The forum is designed because things are bound to get worse with all the mills closing-this way Lord can blame it all on New Brunswickers and make it look like 'democracy'.

He won't receive my vote and who knows because last time I thought people would get rid of him but no they wanted more of his bull and believe me they are still getting that. He needs to go just like our mayor of Saint John. Could not happen quick enough for most of us!

FREDERICTON - New Brunswickers are embracing Premier Bernard Lord's ambitious '5 in 5' plan though achieving the targets may have less to do with finding miracle solutions and more with following through on existing policies.

Right now is the time for Premier Lord should help the people of NB but no way he just does not get that we can't pay for all his mistakes and expect us to not complain. I have not seen my automobile insurance go down in cost, we pay more for all necessities and no one cares about the average person just the millionaires and billionaires. The cost of power should remain the same at least for two more years. We get screwed over on everything. Disgusted and broke and in debt and who pays for it me. We have no where to turn. The wealthy will they don't have to struggle on daily expenses they just want millions to poor in because they are use to having the best.
