What I find interesting is that Mr. Rashid claims he was treated differently because he is of Pakistani descent. While racism certainly exists, I think it's kind of an open secret in Fredericton that the reason Mr. Rashid was singled out is not that he is of Pakistani descent, but that he is A) a hippie and B) a regular activist and protester who police consider a thorn in their side (and a pain in the butt).
It's just as bad a reason for singling him out for special treatment - but he would have more credibility with the public if he didn't try to hang his accusation on racism, but on the Police targeting vocal activists instead.
"..a regular activist and protester.." 5:24 PM so are many others who were there. You yourself come across as a racist.
Fredericton Police is known to be racist. Nothing new there. There have been too many incidences. Mayor is quite aware of it and refuses to address the issue.
I believe that the rogue police officer must be given marching orders right out of the police force in order for the city to save face.
Racism is ugly in any shape and form and usually the transgressors are completely mindless and the rogue police officer is no different.
Asaf is a liar, plain and simple. Immediately after the protest, he stated that he did not resist the police officers. In the photographic evidence, it is very clearly seen that he is resisting the police officer putting handcuffs on him - look at both clenched fists. Then he went on to say his left side hurt, saying he thinks the officer kicked him but wasn't sure. Considering his left side was against the ground and while he was resisting arrest, the officer was kneeling on his right side, it obviously wasn't his left side and it obviously wasn't his right either. If he's going to lie, he should at least get his story straight. It's easy to see from that photograph that he thinks the whole thing is a big joke.
5:24PM - You're completely right. He is a professional protester and that's a well-known fact. It's a shame he doesn't focus his energy on constructive charitable causes. It seems that making signs, protesting the "cause du jour", illegally blocking traffic and verbally antagonizing the police is much more fun to him.
You all need help, his fists were clenched becuase the cop was pulling his arm back so far and had his knee in asaf's side, he was being hurt BADLY, and no they didn't just target him because he is a protestor, 3 others were arrested that day, they were white and they weren't thrown down like asaf, they weren't hit like asaf, they didnt get their asses slapped and they weren't interrogated when taken to the police station, so stop with the bullshit about he deserved it or whatever. I was there, I saw what happened and maybe if you cared about issues you would have been there to see it for yourself as well..
Asaf got thrown to the ground and hit and slapped.... I'd probably clench my fists too. Everyone insists that asaf was treated that way because he's a hippie, not because he's pakistani-american. a hippie? what? nevermind..... point being -- so its ok to hit someone because they're 'hippies'. You people are ridiculous. Get a job.
To the person who says that Asaf Rashid is a Pakistani-American you're incorrect from what I know about him he's a native of Ontario so therefore and evidently that makes him a Pakistani-Canadian.

1:59am, you speak the truth!
I don't know if you noticed, 1:59, but Asaf does do constructive things for the community! He does more than half the city does!
