There was a murder in Saint John on Saturday. Some middle-aged man on Union Street is dead. The suspect will be in court today, yes Sunday.
I had to get this info off the Sunday news on CFBC with Rick Mantle.
There hasn't been a murder in Saint John for some time.
I can't believe they're opening the courts today for this one.
I'd like to hear from readers who know more about this.
I've lived in Saint John all my life. Most faces are familiar to me.
This has made me nervous and sick as I am a senior and I live right near Union Street.
Thank you for this blog site, but I can't help but say it has gone downhill lately (a little).

Apparently the murder was the result of a fight on union street. The guy that died was 20 and died at the hospital secondary to his injuries from the fight. I can't remember his name but the other guy will be charged today, Monday with second degree murder. I heard that the young man that died had sustained skull fractors from the fight. I don't know how reliable this information is, just got bits and pieces from a friend who heard it.

This is very very sad!
Kudos to the Saint John Police for doing such a great job!
If this was the house I am thinking of, this was only a matter of time :(

My heart goes out to the families of both men.

The man that died was 38 and the "alleged" murderer was 20:

Crime 20-year-old to appear in court today after victim of vicious assault dies in hospital

A 20-year-old Saint John man will appear in court today charged in the beating death of David Douglas Lewell, 38. The slaying took place at 366 Union St., early Saturday. Lewell died at the Saint John Regional Hospital later that day of injuries suffered in an assault.

SAINT JOHN - Police have charged 20-year-old James Lee Cannon with second-degree murder in the slaying of 38-year-old David Douglas Lewell.

The charge came in the wake of the city's first homicide of 2006.

Lewell died at the Saint John Regional Hospital Saturday from injuries suffered in what police said was a violent assault earlier in the day at an uptown residence. Police were summoned to the scene at 4:20 a.m.

During a Sunday appearance in provincial court, Cannon was remanded into custody until 10 a.m. today, when he will appear to enter a plea.

The Saint John Police Force's Major Crime Unit continues to investigate.

Sgt. Darrell Scribner, who heads up the unit, said it was the force's uniform patrol division that first responded to a 911 call at 366 Union St., a yellow two-storey tenement-style apartment building.

Police and police vehicles, including a forensic unit, maintained a presence at the scene throughout Saturday.

Even before the victim died, police underscored the seriousness of what had taken place.

"Right now, our Major Crime Unit has been called to investigate a very serious assault," Acting Staff Sgt. Don Cooper said at mid-morning Saturday.

"We have one party in custody and we have one at the hospital in very serious condition."

By late afternoon, Scribner confirmed the victim's death and the laying of charges in a terse, three-paragraph news release.

And on Sunday, he issued a news release identifying both the victim and the man facing charges."
