Hello Charles,

I have been partaking in your blogging for over a year now. I can actually say that I enjoy the dedication that you have to maintaing your site.

I though I would write to you because you are a man of integrity to me.

So I feel I can trust you.

I am writing to you about Prescription Drugs. I see that you write many
articles on it, and years ago I was living in Fredericton and saw you camped out to raise awareness about Ritalin.

My younger sister died January 18, 2005 as a result of accidental prescrition overdose.

The drugs were Codne and Percosets= Oxycodone. Codene is a catalyst for oxycodone so the two drugs combined for a leathal overdose to cause a heart attack.

She was just 44 years old. Then just seven months after her death, a good friend of mine died in August 2005 from Oxy based drugs as well.

I do not know if you are aware but Oxy is synthetic herion that is used for painkillers.

The addiction to this drug is in epidemic porportions in Atlantic Canada.

The recovery rate for this addiction is only at ten percent chance. Therefore anyone who cannot kick it, will die from it eventually.

The Government is at fault for letting Pharmaucetical Industries have the power that they do.

Basically the government has let the Pharmacucetical
Industries and Pharmacies have an open market on drugging consumers.

I think every human has price tag attached to them to determine our consumption worth to capitalizm. Heath has taken on a whole new meaning when the profits margins are the ultimate goal.

I contacted my local MLA with a petition and all they did was use delay
tactics to slow me down. That is okay, I will perhaps use a different
avenue. Because the RCMP are impliacated in this mess also as I had asked for their service to track down my sister before she died or killed someone -she is known to be violent- but they ignored my request and did not do anything at all.

Even though they had her in their possession twice and charged her once with 'mischief' and the second time with "causing public
disturbance'. Even though they knew she had been hospitalized for mental illness several times and even though they could enforce SECTION 10 of the mental health act to save her life they did not do it!!!

Do you know why they did not do it? Because she was a homeless addict who frequently ended up in the justice system for some reason or another.

She was nothing to them, just a violent, homeless Aboriginal woman who could not get her life together. Trash! That is what the RCMP believe as it has been evidenced in their actions for many years now. I have the PUBLIC COMPLAINTS COMISSION AND THE J DIVISION investigating their own abuse.

Pathetic but its the only way to go when you are poor and have no money!!!

NB OMBUDSMAN says its not a provincial issue because they are a FEDERAL BODY!!! but who pays the bill to hire the RCMP in NB??? we do , NB does!!!

What a fight I have on my hands!!! They even made attempt to cover up cause of her death because the first toxicology was at 0%, so i had to make them do another one and it came back FULLY LOADED! but the corner declared that the codene was cause of death and not the OXY!

They are wrong as elsewhere in "the conclusion" it indicates that codene makes oxy more powerful in the system.

They tried to hide that because she went to the doctor because her
lungs were conjested, she had difficulty breathing, but the doctor gave her nothing for that, and gave her PERCOSETS instead????!!!!

Why???

The reason why is this drug is a big money maker for the doctors too.
Because the producer of the drug offers incentive to the doctor who
prescribes it for patients.

The get free cruise vacations paid from the pharmaucetical companies!!!! Who's health do they have in mind?? Not mine and not yours also!!

I wish you will take time to write me if you have time as I know you are
busy. Tell me what you think Charles.

All my Relations
Love Deborah

Does anybody know how many people are given these drugs in NB? Is there any way to find out what symptoms make it the required drug? It's interesting because marijuana makes a good painkiller as well.

Maybe the poor or those who must steal to get money for drugs are the lucky ones. I have a friend who is on perscription drugs - Oxycontin and something that starts with "P". She has no Doctor now, her Doctor recently lost her licence to practice and now my friend goes every week to 10 days to the ER and gets her supply of hard drugs FREE. Any cost is picked up by her medical and prescription insurance. Obviously she is a legal drug addict. And, dear Charles, her doctors give them to her and we pay for them through insurance (I have the same kind of insurance). Maybe your fight should be with Doctors and Pharmacists who prescribe and hand out these addictive drugs. If a person with imaginary pain and a real actress can be on addictive drugs for over 10 years then maybe it is time to start weeding out these abusers of our medical system and make them pay big time. I think then they will willingly go to detox and get off the pills.

Here's a job for you Charles. Try to find out how many people regularly get oxycotin and other narcotics from reputable doctors and pharmacists who are just so tired of seeing these same people cry about pain while they take up space in their waiting rooms. I am sure there are as many people addicted to drugs that are upstanding citizens with an ability to lie to doctors. I have a friend who was given these addictive drugs by a Doctor who has lost her licence to practice. Every time I ask my friend why she takes these pills I am given a different answer. The fact is she is hooked. She now goes to the ER and waits until she gets another week or 10 days supply. I believe that once you have taken addictive drugs for over a certain period of time you become addicted and your name should go on a list so that every doctor knows your problem and when possible that person should go into detox. We jail those who must steal to feed their habit and for those with insurance and the ability to lie, we keep on allowing them to abuse the system. What can be done? Charles, you believe you are just a little lower than the angels, so why not come up with an answer to this nationwide problem?

This isn't rocket science. Want to solve the problem, here it is...

1. Addicts are called addicts for a reason. To get clean an addict needs two things: psychological withdrawal and physiological withdrawal. Every addict is different, so programs have to be tailored to individuals. That takes money. It takes medical counseling and psychological counselling. They don't HAVE to be done 'in person', they can be done online in many cases. Groups of addicts together sometimes work, although sometimes it can be a bad group. As said, it takes work.

2. Recovering addicts need something to do. You can't expect somebody to 'try real hard' to get off drugs all so they can live a life of poverty. There's a reason its called a 'high'. Compared to it, reality sucks ass.

Legislation is helpful, as are subsidies. People need work, even if it isn't paid. Up welfare and get people working, its not like there is nothing to do. Streets are dirty, buildings need fixing up, university enrollment is falling.

3. Most importantly, talk to these people and ask them what they'd LIKE to do, and how you can help them do it. Keep in mind that many are mentally deficient (as we would say, more like 'different'). These people need social housing, and they need subsidized work. Many social service and service industry jobs can be done by challenged people, so long as there are support structures in place.

4. Toughen work safety standards. Anybody that thinks people "make up pain" probably hasn't experienced it. Try biting on your lip hard and imagining your life with that feeling all the time. Many drug addicts got addicted when they couldn't afford dental care. There's an easy fix for that, if our society wants it.

That would go nine tenths of the way there. Keep in mind many people are addicted to different kinds of things. If you 'need' a drug but can pay for it, then nobody really cares. The problem arises when you have to break the law to pay for your fix. A good percentage of people are addicted to alcohol or caffeine or cigarettes, the same goes. Some of these people have high paying jobs, so we don't care.

To add a personal note, people take drugs to 'escape'. When you have this many people escaping to heroin, cocaine, caffeine, pot, alcohol, etc., you've got a symptom of a sick society. People used to take drugs for sacred rituals, now they do it to avoid a shitty reality. But changing reality is a tough job.
